Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.

The most discussed and polarizing game of the decade gets a TV adaptation. Hopefully they deliver just as the game did. Big shoes to follow.

Will it go down the same as the game?

Will the TV audience be as whiney as the game audience (no they wont), lets discuss in here.

I'll give the show credit on one thing, I can actually buy this version of Joel getting killed by Abby. Pedro Joel is 1/10th the killer that Game Joel was.
They do a good job of portraying Joel as somebody who lost everything in the tv show. When he dies, it will be more like putting him out of his misery more than anything

Thought it was an alright episode. Has some stuff in it I really really liked, and some stuff that I didn't care for.

Don't think I would've opened with the Abby story context, I think I would've saved that for a bit later to keep people wondering.

I agree, but at least they didn't show who her loved one is yet.

It was a solid episode. Not a ton happened, but it is staying mostly true to the source material, so hard to knock it. The Bella Ramsey and Pascal stuff is what it is at this point. You either like them or you don't.

Finished and was kinda eh

Execution was too different from the game. Kinda gets lost in translation

And Joel's sister in law argue with Joel and Tom for woke reasons. I'm a little afraid of that

Just putting two and two together, it appears one of the bigger changes they're going to make is how Joel/Tommy and Abby end up together.. In tonight's episode Abby gives a description of Joel, so she knows what to look for. In the game She didn't know anything about him, so when they fight off infected, she didn't even know who he was until he gave his name. They obviously can't do that in the show since she'll know who he is right away, so it appears they're going to be changing how Joel comes across Abby completely. But I don't know we'll see. Either way, that's going to take some of the shock away from it when she kills him because we know she's looking for him.

Oh hell yea, off to a good strat. Love how they put the end of game stuff, right at the beginning.

FUCK I wanna replay it again :messenger_neutral:

Love how they introduced the stalkers right away and made them a big deal in court

one of my biggest issues with the game was having that scene at the end, you have that encounter with the older guy in the beginning of the game at the bar and you dont know why until the end of the game which is like 30 hours later, it was insane to do that lol

Yeah, I fucking hated it

* Ellie still looks and acts like she was 14. Insufferable. Actress should have been recasted. Even the IGN review said so.

* Dina and Jesse are great. Jesse is just like in the game, and Dina is much more charismatic here.

* Pascal was great. He doesn't deliver as angry, energetic Joel, but sad Joel scenes he nails them. Since in Part II he is mostly sad, he will deliver, I think.

Now, what I really hated were the story changes.

Showing Abby and friends at the beginning was idiotic, and so was showing Ellie and Joel discussion and the aftermath of that.

Neil had his reasons for delivering the story that way, so why change it? Imo these changes came from executives/Mazin and he couldnt say no 'cause "they know better how to make a tv show" or something.

Part II was special not because of the story per say, 'cause the story itself wasnt anything groundbreaking. But it was special due to the way it was told.

You should be confused about Ellie reasons, or what happened during the party, or who the fuck were those people who are against Joel etc.

Its frustrating seeing them making a bad adaptation out of it yet again.

Good episode. They're slowly preparing the audience for it, and I think it's a good move.

The dance scene was better in the TV Show. In the game, Joel looked embarrassed, but in the TV show, Joel looked hurt.

Gail/Catherine O'Hara
I'm just speculating here...
I think Gail is the one who gave up Joel's location to Abby, and having him killed is her revenge.

Jesse and Owen actors are meh.

Bella Ramsey as Ellie is fine. 80% of her lines are good, but 20% can be a bit...cringy. This is probably my favorite episode of Pedro Pascal as Joel. Isabela Merced is doing a great job as Dina. I don't know how I feel about Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.

Last of us 2 had some real flaws structurally as a narrative - it's why it's so divisive - this seems to be trying to fix at least some of the issues but I don't know if it will succeed - also Dina is super hot in the show which I appreciate

I liked the episode overall. I think anyone expecting a near 1:1 ratio of the show being like the game beat by beat will be really disappointed with this season.

I can already feel the deviation from the game again with this. I don't mind it at all personally.

Its my favorite game of all time, but even I dont want a 1:1 recreation. I want them to switch things up a bit, other wise whats the point, Ive seen it already.

I welcome any change they make.

There was some infected stuff leading into the water supply at the end there or something, thats how Jakcsonville will get overrun and Joel is gonna get merked. Its going to be an awesome scene I know it

People felt that way with season 1, but with season 2 I think more people will want more deviation.

At least more meaningful deviation that helps to benefit 2's story.

How the fuck did they not recast her. Season 1 was still amazing, but not because of her.
Sure lets recast their Emmy nominated actress who normies are used to after season 1 just because weirdos don't find her attractive. Also, based on the way the game was written in the first place Dina is supposed to utterly mog Ellie in the looks department, that comes across alot more here than the game did.

Attractive? What a weird place for you to go lol. I don't care how attractive she is, she is a horrible actor with zero emotional or facial range.

She was a little girl in the first season. Audience would have been fine with an older actress.

To be fair, I would have recast her and I thought she was fantastic in season 1.

I think she'll struggle to deliver as a physically imposing character in the season.

The sparring in the beginning helped, her getting bitten again by a stalker didn't help.
Her being much smaller than Dina doesn't help.

Ellie isn't physically imposing to begin with, she's fights dirty and scrappy. Don't confuse people uploading their sick murder montages of them mastering the game with how Ellie canonically acts and fights.

Loving eurogamer's thoughts on the episode

I enjoyed how quickly Rutina Wesley's Maria shut down Tommy's casual and perhaps inadvertent sexism. When Tommy, played by Gabriel Luna, quips to Ellie and Dina it would be different if he and Joel had gone after some infected alone, Maria looks at him and questions why. Tommy, aware he has just been put on the spot by his wife for suggesting two females shouldn't act the way two men can without it getting called out, doesn't really have an answer.

That's a good change IMO since in the game it's pure luck Abby bumps into Joel on her first day in the neighborhood(during a blizzard and a horde).
