Hell is Us Demo Coming to Consoles - August 12th

Set it to download on my Ps5, so I'll try it out when I get home today.

Anyone play it one a base Ps5 or SX? How is the performance mode? Actually decent or the usual UE5 experience on console (framedrops and tons of artifacting from trying to upscale some 720p source) ??.

Alright. Played through the demo.

- It looks like a Souls-like.
- It controls like a Souls-like.
- It has diegetic world navigation / lore like a Souls-like

But the fact that it has select-able difficulty customization options is a big plus for me. Also enemies don't respawn whenever you use the manual save spots which is good.

The Pulse system is a bit finicky and I don't think I got a full hang of it, the 'pulses' either disappear too quickly or I'm just pressing RB at the wrong moments but it was a hit or miss for me.

Also the main protagonist is Aiden Pearce looking motherfucker with the Deus Ex voice and the Death Stranding poncho .. hopefully the final game has some visual customization options.

The problem is that pulses disappear if you time it incorrectly but there is no audio cue. Like a "fail" sfx. So it just feels odd overall and took me a minute to get used to. I do like the mechanic though. Ki Pulse for health is cool, just the implementation feels like it needed better sfx.

Wait, so they disappear if you press it too early too? Man that's a little too restrictive lol. Just let me spam the RB/R1 button and get health back when available.

I met the dev back when they were Deus Ex team and you couldn't be more wrong. They're just making a game they wanted to make and that Square-Enix either wouldn't have financed or put so many marketing peoples around the meetings to leash the creatives that it would have veered into some GAAS shit.

They're authentic as can be

You sound like an asshole with that comment to be honest
I'll take the asshole accusation but we'll just have to wait for the metacritic consensus. Maybe I'll be eating my hat.

Seriously, is Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 really the only game that uses the PS5 Pro like it's supposed to be used. No graphics mode, just the highest graphics mode at 60/120fps.

PSSR doesn't do fuck all to image quality in Hell Is Us. I like the demo but seriously I see no difference with PSSR on

I'm pretty sure, yes. Basically you have to hit a Ki Pulse like in Nioh if you played that. It's literally the same system, just has less feedback unfortunately.

Yeah, the tutorial says 'when the ring flashes', it's kinda impossible to look at that small circle in the heat of combat.

There should have been some additional feedback like a sound chime or something.

Yes. That's what makes it feel goofy. There's no real feedback other than the visual which is hard to keep track off among all the visual clutter of modern gaming. Needs sfx.

I was not able to do either the healing pulse or parry. Like at all. The timing is really weird. Or maybe the game fails to explain the mechanics properly.

I'm so in for this game.

Borderline horror but not super spooky / gory? Yes.
Souls style combat but not Souls style difficulty? Yes.
No hand holding, figure shit out on your own? Yes.
Old style launch price instead of $90 CAD? Yes.

And it's Made in Canada.

Wish there was a Switch 2 version but I think I will bite on PS5.

See above for the healing pulse convo we just had, maybe it sheds a bit of light on it. I couldn't parry either and I sat in that room and tried. I read all the tutorials etc. but I couldn't tell if I was failing, if the parry is weak or what I was doing.

No Map, no Marker easy pass for me. I cant play games without at least a Map anymore every game plays like 50% better with a Map look at Wukong.

I gave up in chapter 4 but picked up again after the patch with the map and it was the game of the year for me. What do developers have against maps lately?

Wukong is an action game. This one is about exploration and finding your way. There will be some kind of map later in the game, since there's fast travel, but don't expect an Ubisoft-like.

Played through up to the Marshes (ps5 pro). I'm not sold. I love the atmosphere, what there has been of story is fine, but combat seems dull. And there's a lot of it.

Someone above said 'Souls like combat without the difficulty'. I don't think that's a good thing.

Really into it. Its got a bit of jank but I'm enjoying the weird mixture of puzzles and combat. Doesnt really feel weighty enough to be a souls game to me. The drone is cool. Like this distract ability.

I could see getting stuck or lost in this super easily but I'm in. Not sure if I need it day 1 but getting it for sure.

Art style is great. Menu UI is great.

I'm gonna say this game has me hooked now. The more I play, the more I like it. The combat is starting to be fun with the red orbs, the drone stun ability and especially the charge attack. It's also pretty snappy. The dual axes have a sick charge combo rush.

The fact this has puzzles, keys, NPCs and all that really makes it. I can feel myself already jonesing to get inti that fucking tower and all these other areas...

adamsapple adamsapple turning down the music a bit did the trick. There are sound effects, they were just kind of drowned by the mix. I turned Music down to 80 or 85 and it feels a lot crunchier.

Ironically we've come full circle and I'd give the demo about a 7/10.

Season 1 Destiny GIF by SHOWTIME
Honestly, these days I feel like I can smell a 7/10 coming from a mile away. I really root for a lot of smaller studios because I think some of the best games come from that space but the fact is that most shit coming out lately comes up short. It's even worse when its big budget games with millions in resources. Kinda makes the future look grim.

I like the look of the main character in this game but it feels really disjointed against the enemies. Quality of the NPCs seems rough, too. It feels like they got close with the art direction but are just shy of really nailing it.

Not to get off topic, but I think an upcoming game like Cronos: The New Dawn looks more promising than this. Might end up being another 7/10 but at least the art direction makes the world feel more grounded.

NGL I thought that was terrible.

I really enjoyed how it started out. Game says "We won't tell you anything".

Opens with an interesting cutscene, creating mystique for the world and to draw in the player. Good VAing off the bat, followed by a cool dialogue system and menu to go through. Cool! We're about to get a cool immersive action sim.

And then the bait and switch happens.

You go into a shitty Soulslike dungeon that uses pick-up & place Silent Hill puzzles and riddles, accompanied with the worst and most barebones generic Soulslike combat you will ever experience. Weird healing mechanic and boring link system between enemies to draw out fights. Combat isn't even satisfying since enemies don't react to hits and SFX design is just bad and has no game juice. Parrying is OK.

Then it dawned on me - the "We won't tell you anything" isn't selling a hardcore immersive game, but talking about the shitty Metroidvania area & level-design that is found in again - Soulslike games.

No wonder they added PSSR toggle in the menu, it's quite unstable with PSSR on:

Other than that performance mode looks fluid and is quite sharp (with both IQ options).

Getting Silent Hill 2 remake deja vu. This must be running on an older version of UE5. Hate to see it.

What is funny is that Wukong have lumen + PSSR and it looks ok, game is UE 5.0.

SH2 is 5.1 or something and it has many issues. This game is probably newer than that.

That PSSR 2.0 Cerny promised can't come soon enough...

The dev said it's about 50% combat, 50% exploration/puzzles. Should be less combat than most action games.

PSSR 2.0 will not even work with old UE 5 builds like this game. The current PSSR one requires 5.5 or newer and newer Sony SDK to run last models

The only explanation I can think of is that Wukong devs probably tinkered with things or augmented UE5 to optimize it in certain ways. Seeing these weird volumetric lighting shimmering bugs makes me think these other devs are running shit on stock settings or running Lumen on low settings for performance.

no map shit pass then i know a lot of gamers do not like maps or makers but just give them a on/off toggle.

if you can't get mechanics to operate smoothly, you should probably consider not including them? for me, the only thing worse than parrying mechanics is flawed parrying mechanics...

Parry is easy and has a huge window. It only works on the attacks with a purple outline.

I like the maps in Resident Evil and Silent Hill; they're simple and effective, but I also really like the map in Elden Ring where I can set my own markers.

For me, no map at all is a waste of time, as I'll probably get lost in the map for several hours.

Played up to finding the APC, no combat yet but I like the vibe of this game, it ran great on base PS5. I like that you have to explore and really pay attention in this game, which makes me conflicted because it's hard for me to get into that state.

One of those things I told myself I'll get into when I get the full game. I do think I might want to go for Hard on the combat, I think I was button mashing too much and was still drowning in med kits with the pulse healing mechanic. Then again, who knows how ball-breaking it gets later...

Played on PC and beat the demo. Was going to grind out my axes to level 4 and try out the glyph but maybe another time. Great atmosphere and music (if it's not the composer of Returnal then they have a very similar sound). Combat was kind of fun but really easy with the health pulse. Graphics are good but no idea why it's demanding. I played on 100% res scale, max graphics @120fps dlss quality/frame gen. Felt good only 1 or 2 stutters. HDR was terrible out of the box so I turned it off. Good to hear Adam Jensen's voice again. Not a day 1 for me but I can see myself playing it in the future sometime.

Idk if I'm swimming against the current or not but it's been tough for me to get into. Animations seem cheap, atmospherics are lacking….i think 10 years ago I'd be wowd but coming off beating ex33 is a tough break.
