Surface trade-in thing doesn't see worth it (these things never are).

if I'm looking at the correct model, my late 2013 15" MBP 512 GB SSD/16 GB RAM gets only $450. Pretty sure I could get around $800 or so on eBay.

my late 2013 13" MBPr 128gb/4gb ram gets around 550 if I'm doing it right.

I might have the wrong model so I checked the two models that I know 1 of which are mine. One is $550 and the other $50 what?

And it doesn't seem to ask or care about ram or sdd size. I'm very confused.

I've been using a surface book since my macBook air died last month, and I hate the trackpad. Tap to click feels way more inaccurate than the mba, scrolling is inconsistent, and it just feels worse to the touch. I use an external mouse on it whenever I can. I would absolutely try a surface book touchpad before you assume it will be indistinguishable from a macbook touchpad for you.

Are you using chrome? Because that, for whatever reason, is ridiculously unoptimized for Windows/Surface laptops. The touch pad on my Surface pro works amazing on MS's own software, but anything else is a coin toss

nah, the line is dead.
they made a smaller pro as a replacement.

Really dumb. Do they not understand why that was appealing for people? It's all downhill recently. The pricing of the lineup really is a kick in the nuts.

I have an old 2009 MBP that I was about to replace after this event. I had held off getting last year's MBP with free wireless headphones to see this update, but ugh the pricing is just too much. I was expecting to pay 2-2.5k on the device, but now i just don't know

the Canadian pricing is disgusting.

seriously, it's insane

Call me insane, but I think I just might:

Sell my 2013 15" rMBP
Sell my gaming desktop

Then...

Buy 12" rMBP for work/travel/around the house
Buy 17" Razer Blade for desktop gaming, but also portable photo editing rig and gaming/LANs

Honestly, won't come out to THAT much more, and I'll have a lot more capability in my options.

Honestly, thinking about it, I might go the same route. Which is crazy for me to think about, I was ready to lay down the cash on a 15"

Web based as in I have to upload it online? Oh man, I have over 250 GB of photos and videos.

If you want to keep full res you would need to buy storage but I'm happy to have a free automated back up for my phone. Doesn't sound like it is what you need.

You would be better trying to find the display features on the Windows 10 Photos app to see if it meets your needs

Can I ask where do you keep 250GB of photos? With the storage options on new computers (256GB SSDs) do you have a NAS or external drive set up.

Another thing I'm not too keen on is that trackpad. I think the 3D Touch works great on the iPhone and Watch, but when I bought the rMB I tried to dig the trackpad.. but I missed that click.

It's even worse than I thought, because the base model doesn't come with the touchbar.

What the actual fuck.

The ram is slower as well.

Need that emoji bar on my MacBook PRO

I liked, and get the point of the touchbar, but oh boy did it ever glaringly put a spotlight on the fact that OSX and Macs still don't have touchscreen. All this exacerbated by the launch of the Surface Studio yesterday. It basically adds functionality in a literally and philosophically narrow way that's available on just about every other platform, including the bulk of Apple's other OSs.

Had to buy the 15" for work needs. Painful. Very very painful. Most expensive Mac I've ever had to buy, more expensive than my Mac Pro was. And I really don't feel excited about it. Not for that kind of money.

I honestly just wanted a new Mac Pro. But I guess pro desktops no longer exist in the eyes of Phil Schiller.

Steve Jobs rotates in his grave.

What a mess.

Yup.

This is Apple at its most uninspired. The price is ridiculous. The feature set and specs are dismal. Touch Bar is a joke. I have zero compelling reason to upgrade from my mid-2014 rMBP to this.

And I really wanted a reason.

Any idea how the touch bar works in Windows? DO you lose keys there?
They showed off that holding the fn key on the keyboard switches the touch bar to just the function keys on macOS. I assume it defaults to that mode in Windows and holding the fn key will switch over to controls like volume, brightness, etc...

I really wish they'd make a 16:10 version of this.

Agreed. But I haven't seen 16:10 since I bought my last (current) MBP in 2011. I assume some of the Elite Books are still 16:10 with the Dreamcolor panel or whatever. But IDK.

Anyway, it's looking like I'll be moving on to the real spiritual successor of the MBP line

So I guess either the regular Razer Blade or the Pro. The screen quality, power, ports, and portability that I expect. Most of which I used to get with Apple, which have all somehow been depreciated by their Macbook team.

I used to think the Macbook line was for casuals who wanted a computer made from better materials and a better process and the Pro was for power/professional users who also did a little gaming here and there. Now they all seem to be for casual users. Very disappointed as I greatly prefer Spaces and multiple desktops for managing my business stuff. It's simply not as good an experience in Windows.

Indeed. It does feel Apple has lost its way a bit recently, and I have been well served by a lot Macs. It seems they have basically swapped seats with MS now. Apple being too big to really care about macs and MS going after the creative niche like an underdog rebuilding its brand.

UK prices are absolutely insane.

Also their obsession with thinness is starting to get a little annoying. Why do pros need a thin laptop? There's a huge margin between thin and clunky and I feel like the pre-retina MBPs straddled that line fine.

Idk what to say ....

These prices are bonkers even by their standards. What on earth

I thought it was smart to have a non touch bar version which I was quick to want when they showed it but for that starting price? ...

Either I'm telling them screw off or im about to start a hustle of some sort.
The starting price for the non touch bar version is almost as insane as buying an iPhone and MacBook Pro from an Apple Store at the same time and having no way to connect them, they've really lost the plot.

So I was going to boot camp purely for gaming. I might pick up the cheaper new MBP13 without the touch bar for daily stuff and a razer laptop for games. I just... I just don't know if I can swallow the price for the 15" that I want

Is this the first keynote that can be streamed in Chrome? I remember always needing to use Safari to view them previously.

Yes, the Razer line is the spiritual successor to the MBP line.

The bandwidth and flexibility of USB-C is not for casuals. But yes, it will be a difficult, dongle-filled transition. But Apple has historically always moved to ports earlier than the industry, so this is not unexpected. Though I'm not sure how I'll hook up my DisplayPort display to it yet...

I've never owned a MacBook and was actually excited for this event hoping I would finally take the plunge. Reading these reactions is notifying me I apparently shouldn't bother. Disappointing.

So, now that we can all kinda agree that this model is a misstep for Apple, what would people really want to see on a MBP?

I think an attractive base model at $1499 would be

Specs:
13" Screen
Current Gen i5 CPU
1060m 3GB
8GB Ram
256GB SSD

Ports:
2x USB C
2x USB 3.1
1x HDMI
1x Display Port
1x Ethernet
1x SDXC

Take it or leave it
Fingerprint Sensor

Apple could totally make a machine profitable at this price, granted it wouldn't be the insane margins they have on their current machines. More importantly it would actually be a "Professional" device for professionals :(

And just 2 ports.

Useless! There's silly me assuming they only meant 2 TB-3 ports plus the 2 usb-c ports on the other side. Not actually 2 ports.

What crap. What utter crap!

Very odd to come out of an Apple event thinking 'hmm so they've done a cheaper version of what Microsoft is doing'. Not to say I don't like the idea of the touchbar but it really feels like something a PC manufacturer would have done 5 years ago, while the Surface Dial feels more like an Apple invention, it's that kind of thing 1 person you know will love and he won't shut up about it, meanwhile I'll be over here tapping poop emojis into chat over and over again.

Btw does anyone still need a thinner laptop? I feel like there 100% was a problem that needed solving when Apple started with the aluminum cases but they don't need to keep doing it now, they've fixed the problem, laptops are thin enough.

So no desktop updates and they made the laptops worse across the board. I guess if I can avoid going back into iOS dev I won't have to buy one of these when my 2013 MBP reaches the end of its life.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I can only hope they stealth upgrade the iMac in the next few months.

TB-3 and USB-C are the same shame port

I know thats why I am all for it - but the 13" without touch bar actually has only 2 ports.

Anyone know if the retina 2016 MacBook Pro (not the one announced today) can play overwatch smoothly ? I want to game with my little one as I travel for work and was wondering does it work fine enough?
