Any thoughts on the 12" MacBook please? It's for my girlfriend and she's a very light user (at most she loads photoshop with a few layers every month or so) and it's £500 cheaper which is a very considerable saving.

It's fine for such light use. Get her to try the keyboard in store for a while, it's the most polarizing thing about it.

This was extremely irritating for me, because I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I'd consider switching back to Windows for the first time in fifteen years, but I need Sketch for work, and it's OSX only.

So it's either dive in the world of Hackintosh, or...what? Has getting OSX on Windows hardware gotten any easier?

edit: is there a Windows laptop recommendations thread around here?

You're telling me that in order for me to adapt this computer to my current environment, I need to buy 4 dongle adapters right out of the box? I am currently:

- Using an external USB Yeti mic that I have to use
- Charging my iPad
- Connected to my external USB DAC (Nuforce Icon HDP)
- DisplayPort out to my monitor via dongle/adapter
- Power plugged in.

My Wacom tablet and external USB HDDs are on deck when I need to use it too. Right now on my 2011 MBP I can hook essentially everything I need up, no dongles required. So this becomes backward steps for me that cost me more money without any practical benefit for me. It's not going to make my USB hardware run faster. It's just going to cost me more.

Oh, I'm not defending the decision. The reasonable, customer-friendly thing to do would be to add 2 USB-C ports and keep around HDMI and a USB port, and add a Lightning port to connect iOS devices and earbuds. I'm just saying USB-C is a pro-quality port. It's just that Apple is way ahead of the industry in adopting it.

I'm not happy about it, either. I mean I just had to buy one, and have to buy three adapters. My bigger concern is that 4 ports just won't be enough. My Mac Pro has 4 USB ports and I'm often using three of them, in addition to FireWire and DP. I can't say I understand their thought process on this configuration, but I do understand the direction they want to head in.

Do not get the base 13 if you expect pro class performance and expansion. Only two ports and a MBA class CPU. It's literally made for Air lovers who wanted a retina screen. Sadly it costs $300 more than they were expecting. (256gb Air is $1300)

Two ports doesn't make much difference really. And the CPU boosts nearly as high as the touch bar version so I don't think it'd feel slow

Really the only thing that making me think twice is no magsafe... Like why would you ever remove that?

I don't know what the actual answer is, but all the Mac computers I've seen over the last 5 years have had cables that were worn out really badly round the magsafe connector and the power brick. Maybe that is why it was removed.

Sketch is a pretty lightweight app, do you even really need a Pro? You're probably better off picking up a 2015 MBP if price is a concern.

christ, the hits just keep coming.

I was waiting for a 5K monitor with USB-C to share between my desktop and Macbook, so this new LG/Apple one looked great. But not only does it have a single USB-C uplink (no additional DP), but the port is rear-facing, not downwards:

They're a nightmare when used with a workstation vesa mount

understood. I didn't mean for that to come off as hostile or frustrated towards anyone but Apple.

I never expected to leave the Mac laptop ecosystem, ever. I've been using one for the last 7 years, daily. But these decisions continue to feel like backward steps for me. Lots of cost and very little practical gain for me. I'm just disappointed. First they took my 17" option. Then they took the ability to add a second HDD (by removing the optical drive). Then they took my ports and asked me to pay to get my devices that have worked for a decade to again work with this new system.

Am I buying a computer or a game console? Having to rebuy shit to make old components work is a game console thing.

that's more reasonable.

Is the 2.8ghz and AMD Radeon R9 M370X the top end of 2015 MBP? might grab a refurb one of those instead of this :/

The brick to MagSafe end was an awful weak point on the old charger. Being able to swap that segment of the charger cheaply is a blessing (I had to buy a whole new MagSafe earlier this year)

My cousin has a 25% discount he is willing to give me which brings the final price of the MacBook Pro 15 inch base model down to $2016~ and I am still hesitant. Is there a Windows machine out there similar that is cheaper? I mean I love the MacBook 15 but I don't think it's worth $2000...

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Wow, I just noticed the baseline new MBP WITHOUT the touch bar thing in the UK is £1449!

YIKES! I'll stick to my 2015 rMBP with a decent set of ports I actually use. Jesus..

Look at Razer. Much better value and it will hold resale nearly as well.

they needed to ditch the 30 pin. USB C didn't exist at that point and the other small USB port options sucked at the time (micro and mini). it's pretty clear not having USB C on iPhone s suboptimal, but they aren't going to switch ponies now. Maybe when lightning is 10yo

I disagree. You'll only be left with one port if you're charging.

And the 2x TDP does matter for throttling and graphics performance. The latter is where it's most different.

Ummm....sorry bud, but this is complete fucking hogwash.

is it now? which part? expecting USB to be available? or that game consoles depreciate accessories from previous hardware in a way very similar to Apple (but with poorer excuses for doing so)?

You know the last thing I had to buy a dongle for? For my PS3 fight stick so I could use it on my XBone. You know what I'd have to do if I wanted to make this MBP work in my office?

hint: the same thing I had to do for my PS3 stick. which is something only Apple asks me to do in the PC space.

Apple is really fucking up with all this dongle bs. A 3k laptop should have a fucking hdmi port.

Yes, it should. And some USB ports. You know, normal shit.

I doubt Apple would have adopted USB-C on their iDevices even if it was ready around the time of Lightning. They really want to protect their lucrative MFi revenue.

So i just ordered the space gray 15'' model.
Go ahead laugh

My mid 2015 has served me well and seems to be a much better machine.

If this new touchbar blows me away i will keep it, if i do not like the keyboard or something changes my mind i can just return it. I am sure i can get at least 1500 off my current one.

But i want to try before i sell my mid 2015 model
because dongles

Thanks guys! For me it's between the MacBook Air 13" and the MacBook 12".

The Air is slightly cheaper, has a much quicker processor, bigger screen, USB ports... But the MacBook has retina and is arguably a bit nicer

You made a blanket statement saying that buying new shit to get old shit working on computers is like some new thing. I was calling that out. Would like like not to? You bet, but buying new adapters/cables is nothing new.
