What are people's thoughts on whether the upgraded 2.9ghz CPU and 4GB GPU are worth the cost? My use cases are graphic experience design, professional photo editing and the occasional game like Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Civ, XCOM, that sort of thing...

These are so expensive that I'm trying to find ways to save money wherever possible, but these upgrades served me well on my previous Macbook Pro. I'm a bit out of touch on computer parts, so any help would be appreciated :)

Just ordered the maxed out 13" with Touch ID / bar. Would've made the switch over to Windows once they started the paradigm shift which began with the rMB but the lack of HiDPI support is a joke.

Windows 10 seems to be off to a good start, will see if the Creatives Update changes any of their scaling options.

Does the Creatives update add better color management (WCG/HDR, etc.) support? Because I'm halfway worried that WCG, etc. on Windows support is going to be the high DPI support mess all over again.

I bought a 4K monitor last year, and have been so disappointed with the extreme amount of issues I've ran into with a 1080p + 4K monitor setup.

The Radeon 460 GPU upgrade seems like a much better value to me than $200 for a 200MHz CPU bump. I can't imagine there would be much of a discernible difference between the CPUs in most usage scenarios.

Jesus titty fucking Christ it's $3,499 for the lower specced 15" MBP in Australia. I must've got the deal of the century buying my 15" rMBP for $2200 in 2012. Nowadays that would only get me the entry level 13" MBP.

I hope my current laptop lives forever.

glad i held on to my current mbpr15 from late 2013.

touchbar is stupid and they increased the pricing. and why the fuck would i want a touchpad thats twice as big?
also, 10 hour battery in 2017 is silly. should innovate next time and get us to to 15 or 24 hours and not make these 30 minute battery life jumps every 4 years.

gonna go back to thinkpads next time or to a Surface product.

Was really happy when I saw a non touch bar option (don't really need it, looks nice though) and a space gray (!) coloration, then I checked the price for a standard 13 inch...

Fuck. Student discounts won't help much either.

That's why I was waiting for the redesign - but a 13" this time. Something lighter / thinner and more efficient with a high dpi display :/

Yeah, that's exactly what I was going to do as well, just perhaps with a bit more urgency than you. :D

I can't, though. The value proposition, while always iffy, has really bottomed out. I'm thinking an XPS 13, a HP Specter, or a Blade Stealth now. A bit sad, as I still love this shitty thing, but $2k just to get a 13" laptop with 16GB of RAM is nuts.

Don't read this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10798/lg-introduces-new-4k-and-5k-ultrafine-monitors

At this point you may have noticed that all of these specs are the same as Apple's iMacs. LG Display makes the IPS displays in the iMacs, so it's very likely if not certain that these are the same panels. Given that these monitors are targeted at users of the new MacBook Pro, it's also very likely that they do not have any sort of sRGB fallback mode, as such an option is unnecessary on macOS where there is end to end color management in any AppKit app and even in most apps that don't use AppKit. This is important to keep in mind for anyone interested in buying these for a Windows computer. The state of color management on Windows means that in nearly every application you'll be stuck with oversaturated colors and no workaround, so I wouldn't recommend it even if it can work.

While I'm on the topic of Windows support, I will say that from a technical perspective, the displays should work with a Windows computer. However, product listings for the monitor specify that you need a Mac with USB-C for the 4K model, and a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 for the 5K model. This limits the 4K model to Apple's MacBook, and the new MacBook Pros, with the 5K model only working on the latter. This also ties back to the integration with macOS. Most monitors use physical buttons for controlling brightness and volume, but the LG UltraFine displays use the integrated controls that macOS provides, meaning that it can respond to the volume and brightness keys on Mac keyboards. It doesn't look like the monitors have any buttons to fall back on, so this may be another situation where Windows users should be wary, and it definitely explains why the monitors are being marketed specifically for their integration with macOS.

Watching the Verge first look video now and, in an attempt to show how it's just as easy to change the volume with the touch bar as it is with physical keys, both times he goes to activate the touch the volume keys, they do not register and he has to touch it again. Definitely one of those things that inevitably happen when touch displays try to replace the functionality of physical buttons but the tactile feedback isn't there (or good enough, dunno if there's a motor in there).

you picked the worst time to jump in.

Seriously. Apple had the balls to only put two ports on the 13" without the touch bar....the 13" with it has 4. One is used to charge, so you basically have a computer with 1 single usable port while it's charged....

I find it embarrassing to see Apple be so greedy. Makes it worse when you realize they treat their employees the same and have a shitty work culture. Quite shocking considering all the cash they have on hand. I guess this is what happen when you have a CEO that only cares about the bottom line and is all about saving cents. Shameful stuff Apple.

I was considering buying a macbook this year, but not like this......not like this.

he screwed up multiple times during his demonstration not just with volume.
pretty much tells me how much i'd love using that thing.

So I just got the MacBook Pro 13" with 512gb base.

How bad are the specs CPU and GPU wise? Like they are faster then the 2015 MacBook Pro's right?

Can I do any PC gaming or Mac gaming or no? I don't really plan to but knowing its some what capable is nice.

I needed an upgrade to my iMac 2010 computer and felt I would go portable this time around.

Don't plan on playing anything but the most basic games on that.

Yeah I just finished the video and he kept doing it.

It's awful because I can just see being in class/meetings now and having to do a double take trying to hit the mute key in haste.

Just another Brit popping in to say "holy fucking shit what the fuck Apple" at the prices of the new MBP.

Mine is three years old in March, still runs like a dream (battery noticeably weaker since Sierra though). Long may it live.

But seriously, they're taking the piss with the pricing. Shame nobody ever calls Apple out on their shit.

That price gouging though, yowza.

Are these new MBPs on demo in Apple stores today? Ideally they would have the touch strip ones, but I'd settle for seeing the normal 13" refresh model as well.

Same. I am already on 8GB on 8yr old hardware so 16GB would be nice to be somewhat future proof and do more complex work. (I feel sorry for the users who would like 32GB)

But the price is not really value for money with the macs anymore :/ Shame the software I own is mac only.

So looking at a 2015 13" MBP retina vs non touch bar 13" 2016 Con.

My 3 year old rMBP is still at 90% of battery. It gets handed down to the next person in my family when I replace it and they keep it for another three years.

Literally doing the exact same thing.

Only reason I'm upgrading at this point is I bought a 13" rMBP in 2013 because that was all I could afford after a water spill on my 2012 15" Sandy. Going back to a 15" will be a huge jump in performance and resolution for me.

Right? Christ. Even the 13" comes in over $3K if you opt for AppleCare (which is always worth buying because shit always breaks). Closer to $3500 if you want 16GB RAM and some dongles.

Any word if the new MBP screens are 10-bit? It seems weird to me how they've gone WCG but not 10-bit.

Maybe they're concerned at GPU resources and scaling performance at such high resolution?

Nah I'm not buying this pos for that amount of money now. Taking the piss. Braindead.

Ordered the lower tier 15" and upgraded to 512GB SSD and 4GB video card. Going to be a massive upgrade from my Air. Can't wait.

It's even worse than I thought, because the base model doesn't come with the touchbar.

What the actual fuck.
The worst part is it's exactly what you'd expect them to do.

They did it with the Mac mini. They did it with the iMac. Made all new super awesome technologically advanced iMacs but raised their prices. Then threw in some cheap model with a significantly underpowered processor and inability to change anything for cheaper. Then they did it with the mini. The $500 model is back... at a price. It's underpowered and impossible to upgrade.

Now they've done it with the MacBook Pro.

Guess I'm going with a fully upgraded 15" (save for the 2TB drive, even I can't pony up on that price). I'm getting happier about it the more I think about it. The RX 460 isn't great but it'll serve me well, and one of these days I'll be able to buy an eGPU enclosure and be happy

Thoughts on the toucbar,

- Functionally, how is the touchbar any better than a standard touchscreen? Every budget $99 Windows tablet has a touchscreen now that can do everything this touchbar can do and more.

- I can't see devs utilizing the touchbar in any cool ways that we havent seen before on similar products (Galaxy Edge, LG V10/V20, Razer Deathstalker, etc)

- You can bet that advertisers are going to use the shit out of of the touchbar... instead of obtrusive banner ads, youre going to have a nice SHINY OLED ad across the touchbar in certain websites and apps

And the Mag-Safe... why? This was Apple's best invention ever.

Do eGPUs work with Macs running Windows?

Just catching up with the news.

Nothing new to the desktop lines (iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro) at all today eh??

As I understand the rumours, there won't be any iMac updates until Q1/Q2 2017 to match Kaby Lake processors most suited to them.

Similar story for future Mac Pros but I don't know when the new Xeons are out.

Mac Minis though, no one knows what's up with those.

Jesus, they even raised the price of the 2015 15"! Wtf?

Seriously tempted to get the base 2015 15" though (not from Apple). I would love 512gb but I can live with 256.
