Hey I'm not going to be defending Apple here but to say you are going to get a Razer is a bit silly. Razor makes crap products that fall apart easily. I will never buy from them again.

Even without the conversions issues though, I feel like these sorts of prices are way, way beyond what I'd ever consider paying for a laptop.

I nearly shit myself when I saw some of the prices coming out Microsoft's event yesterday (although with those at least there's some acknowledgement of the strength and innovation of the products) and then Apple are following suite today. Has the market just ballooned again or what?

One and a half grand for the baseline of a line of laptops is fucking lunacy. I don't know where the market even is there.

It's just.. what? What is going on over there?

Trust me, dropping £999 on this machine was hard to swallow, but now the baseline without the main feature of the entire line is £1449? That's an absolute con. I'd usually stand by Apple here and say you get what you pay for - their devices truly are best in class in terms of design, form factor, usability and durability. These things work for years, but for a baseline machine, that price is frankly taking the piss.

I'd recommend everyone I know to jump on the 2015 rMBP. It's fast as all hell and has every port you need in a super slim body.

I'm using a firewire 400 audio interface -> firewire 800 adapter -> thunderbolt adapter -> and now I guess and adapter to usb-c?

At least it still works. :)

I can abandon my plans for a second Windows machine for games if there has been any headway at all into Thunderbolt 3 external GPU enclosures. What's the word on that?

How much more powerful is this compared to the 2015 one?

If I were to somehow find the money to buy one, I'd be using it primarily for moderately intense Adobe work (4k editing and VFX in Premiere and After Effects).

Will it chomp through that sort of workload? Did the 2015 chomp through that workload? Should I just get a desktop Mac?

edit: talking about maxed out 15'' ofc

I am typing right now on my main computer, my 2008 Macbook 13" Unibody. It's been a really wonderful computer which I've used every single day for both pleasure (and work). Amazing, solid build quality that still feels great today. This year I switched out the out mechanical drive for an SSD, and the battery now only lasts an hour, but other than that, its in fine condition (just slow now).

If I were to buy one of these new MacBooks today, even at UK prices which are VERY EXPENSIVE, I still think I'd get similar value out of it that I did with this Mac.

Yh my MBP only stopped working a few months ago (motherboard, the only problem I can't fix :( ), I used it so much and think that 7 years represented great value. I'm also from the UK but luckily I might be able to get it on a uni discount :p, as I can still access uni email for some reason (at least for now), which is great as it also means you get the Apple care for free which is usually another couple of hundred.

There is no way your battery last more than an hour.

Next time I use it, I'll make sure to use it unplugged, and find out.

Now that I'm reading that Overwatch does run very well on a 2015 MBP, even the ones with Iris, I might just go in that direction. I was actually okay about upgrading my life to USB-C, but maybe I won't have to worry about that.

They were cheeky enough to increase the price of the 2015 15in rMBP by £300 after today's event...

So - I feel like while the new models are beautiful - the price is pretty depressing.

Would be interested to hear if Apple will allow the Razer Core to be supported, would make the 13" model a lot more attractive.

No fucking way. What slimey shit. So they figured once you heard that they removed ports you'd want an older model, and surprise, it's now more expensive by the hundreds than it was hours ago.

Cock fucks.

My 7 year old, banged up MBP squeaks by at around 90 minutes if I don't work it too hard (e.g., compiling a bunch of code and running a VM or two), so I can pretty much guarantee yours will easily exceed an hour.

Macs are surprisingly resilient, regardless of how disappointing their press conferences are.

Speaking of piles of garbage, my current 2010 MBP:

-Won't hold a battery longer than like 20 minutes.
-The keyboard is completely busted, causing me to use a bluetooth keyboard and have to disable the onboard one via terminal (otherwise it randomly hits down or enter)
-The screen is literally falling off. It slides down once in a while.
-Every one of the nubs on the bottom has fallen off, exposing huge holes
-It basically eats discs. They go in but can't come out. Also I have an external mac disc drive that apparently can't be recognized by this computer for some godforsaken reason...
-Screws wind themselves out all the time on the case
-Audio jack is completely fucked

Oh man, are we playing "who's got the shittiest Macbook?" My favorite!

Late 2008 15" MBP (first unibody, typing on it right now, use it every day)
-No battery at all. I have two, both have swollen to the point of no longer fitting. That means I have to hibernate or shut down every time I want to move from room to room, and if I accidentally unhook the Magsafe (say while in bed where it's easy to do), it just dies.
-The display cable is loose, rendering the right 25% of the screen a riot of colors. This can be rectified by wiggling the screen and pressing on the back by the vents until it stays in place...for about five minutes, when it will somehow get loose again (even without touching it at all), causing the process (which takes anywhere from a minute to half an hour to get it back in) to repeat.
- The fans have to run at maximum all of the time or it'll overheat. I've cleaned it out multiple times (including removing the fans) to no avail; it's probably a thermal paste thing.
- Any 1080p video, including from Youtube, causes it to stutter and overheat.
- I'm missing three of the feet, causing it to sit lopsided.
- My Superdrive hasn't worked in years.
- 50% of the time, it has a kernel panic when you turn it on.

This refresh was going to be my year to finally replace it. Now, I'm probably going with a Windows laptop of some description, as I just can't stomach the price increases. I expected to pay about $1200-$1400, but it's just not worth it.

Anyone else rocking a shitty Macbook and would like to share?

I think once the Touch Bar gets out in the wild and we see third-party developer support for it, it's going to get very positive reactions, and a lot of passersby at coffeeshops wanting to touch the Bar.

Whether that's worth the price gouging or the ports issue I don't know, but I think the negativity about the Touch Bar will go away, aside from Surface fanboys. I think it'll be extremely useful and make workflows more efficient.
Of course it's not worth the price gouging. It's not that special. Anything it can do, a touchscreen can theoretically do better.

Radeon Pro 450 is nearly equivalent to Nvidia GTX 580M

Radeon Pro 455 is nearly equivalent to Nvidia GTX 765M

Base dGPU on MBP 15 2016 is at least better than AMD M370X.

450 is slightly worse than Skylake Pro Graphics. 455 is slightly better than Skylake Pro Graphics.

Why the fuck, are there no fucking ports? I fucking need the HDMI I love it and no regular USBs which all my devices (including my iPhone 6) use. This is so so so so so bad. I don't need an upgrade yet but this new macbook sucks. And MacBook Pro is my favourite line of computers of all time. This is so so important to me.
Embrace the Surface Book. I want one so bad after using my brother in laws.

So what're your full buying plans gonna be? i know (allll the way back from that CW early screening) you were incredibly hyped for the 15in.

I don't even know, man. It depends on the state of the external GPU enclosures to be honest. I'm considering a 15" now since it has the best dGPU in it, but if I can find a good external GPU enclosure I might be able to get by with a 13" and spend the saved money on that setup

What other Pro displays were you considering?

I was hoping whatever new display Apple pimped out would be at $1000 like the previous Thunderbolt Display

Unfortunately, the tech media are too enamored by Apple to question - or even ridicule - the price increases for largely questionable products. This is the sort of action that should be universally criticised and rejected.

I wonder why Apple didn't just buy the panels from LG and slap it into the Tunderbolt display housing like they used to...

One site says it was smooth running 2 5K monitors and editing 5k video which impressed him.

Wait a week for benchmarks and real tests though.

Man some of you guys have destoried you laptops. My 13" MacBook air 2012 has a nonworking usb port. I am ready to move on.

Mine was actually pretty immaculate until about a year ago and then it just went to shit. I dunno what the fuck, but everything happened right around then.

Apple is really going to offer the old Air for $999 USD as their entry level notebook? I guess once it dies there will be no Apple noebook that holds that price point. That place was once held for the iBook and old MacBook line that got regular updates. Solid entry level Apple notebook and not old ass hardware left to die.

I have a 2010 MBA which still works great, but is a little slow and only has about 3 hours of battery.

Not sure if everywhere, but the MB went down in price in Japan, with the standard MBP being 150,000.

15-inch MBP looking nice and way out of my price range.

^Same model here but amazingly not busted^

Amazing laptop upgraded to 8GB ram and SSD. Rather surprisingly not a lot is wrong with it.

Not terribly energy efficient also prone to overheating now.
Low screen res is quite discomforting next to the retinas.
Keys have gone a bit shiny.
Battery capacity is 63% @ 1300 cycles. 1 hr life atm.
Does not do anything over 1080p via youtube.
Software still works quite well
The shell and display are in great condition.

All in all not bad - but dated.

That's why I was waiting for the redesign - but a 13" this time. Something lighter / thinner and more efficient with a high dpi display :/

The guy is complaining about no built in HDMI and you recommend another laptop with no built in HDMI.
Ah, I just figured it did tbh. It had all sorts of things. I guess with it being kind of a tablet it makes sense. I only used it for a few hours.

That UK pricing. Holy shit.

Lost a sale here Apple. I was holding back buying a MacBoo Pro 13" but I never expected that price hike. It'd be funny if it wasn't so downright greedy.

Stunning looking products, wouldn't want to think to have to seek out an alternative. Amazing screen, plus running 2 x 5K monitors off it at the same time is NUTS on a machine that small. Touchbar looks useful even. Basically I'm sold.

Awesome, I have £1200 set aside for this, I might stretch to bump the SSD to 512GB if I can afford it, lets see...

Oh wait, it's £1450 for the base model, not £1100, a 30% increase, ack!

Oh wait, that doesn't have the touchbar, for the base model touchbar machine it's £1750, a near 60% increase. What the fuck.

After the iPhone was refreshed in September to be massively faster, better camera, more storage, new features like haptic, did it's price go up 30-60% too? Of course not.

This price increase is confusing, and I want to say unprecedented. All the (mostly bs) shit people talk about Apples prices is usually easy to dispel when you look at the specs/value, other times not so easy (current neglected Mac Pro). In this case, I'm out, it's cool, but I don't get it, I'm priced out.

Sticking with Lightning on iOS devices and on the new desktop Keyboard and Trackpad instead of going with USB-C is idiocy.

So is ditching normal USB3 ports entirely and Magsafe. A "Pro" laptop should probably have an SD card slot too. Nobody was complaining that the old MBPs were too thick or that they had too many ports (lol).

If I needed to upgrade I would be seriously considering ditching Apple entirely right now. I hope they get their act together by the time I need new gear. Awful prices too.
