I've been playing a lot of World of Warships and League of Legends lately. Might give this a stab though....my biggest fear with every F2P is how much I can actually play and enjoy without spending money. Any feedback on that angle in this game?

The gold gain in the first month has many many incentives compared to normal grind
Then they get you to play regularly with daily challenges
After the first month, you will have enough gold to buy 2-6 heroes, depending on whether you go for cheap ones or not. Then the grind sets in.
All heroes you can buy with $$$, most alternative mounts (which you will be seeing a lot of) you buy with $$$, and all skins cost $$$ except for the level 10 master unlocks. Some skins cost upto $19AUD, which in consideration, is cheaper than a Dota 2 Arcana.
Every week heroes & cosmetics go on sale, which also adds to temptation.
Theres a mount you get just for spending money on the game, giving you an immediate bonus reward for spending $$$ on the game.

Game is fun, but if you have fears about your own self restraint with buying things in F2P, then maybe give it a miss.

Dota 2 is Sweded Dota. In some cases it's changed just enough for noteworthy characters, others are still pretty bang on the nose.

Its actually very lenient in that regard. You get gold every X levels, daily quests which help accrue that gold. Levelling up Heroes also nets you 500 gold at level 5 of that hero(so in total about...15kish to be made.) like the person above me said, just levelling up your account will net you up to 2-6 heroes worth of gold. i myself have 34k. For you know, Heroes and Masterskins

Thanks for feedback. I just watched a youtube gameplay video, and it actually looks a lot more fun than expected. I hope the community isn't as toxic as League or Dota.

Just in case anyone wants to play with me lol, I've been playing for about 2 weeks now and loving it. Looking to play with people now, cool people and not toxic asses like I hear MOBAs usually are!

They need to simply remove Blood For Blood and Envenom.

Also Aba top hat stabs should reveal an invis unit, like any action an invis unit takes.

Stabs do that but not show the enemy if he/she is on a bush, more like it need an ability to make the stab procs reveal stat on enemy heroes

You do get some toxicity but it's not as bad as other MOBAs. Maybe once in a few games you'll get someone being an arse, but even then its super easy to just mute them. Bring up the score screen with tab and mute 'em.

Yeah like this game doesnt need much communication. You just ping. Otherwise all the objectives are declared by the announcer, when you ping a merc camp it says in text "X wants to do this camp". Doing normals you wont run across asses.

So after the tutorial is complete, do I go against AI for a while?

You can just do Quick Match if you want to hop right into PVP. I'm fairly new myself and the game's done a solid job of matching me with fellow nooblords. I did run into a number of ragequitters and AFKers initially, but for whatever reason they got filtered out of my games pretty fast.

Decided to spend gold on Abathur. Well worth it, so much fun when playing with a friend. Felt pretty efficient even with little to no knowledge of Aba. Can't wait to play around more with it and get more insight on skills and talents.
Friend got a little annoyed of me watching over him and yelling instructions. "Gank that hero, lets take that camp, lets push a lane" :D Good times.

So Sylvanas = Mines Domination.

Now I am thinking Vikings = Battlefield of Eternity Domination.

The amount of experience the vikings can get on that map is insane. Have 1 viking at top and one at bottom. Then the third one just helps during the immortal fight in center. The immortal fight generally lasts so long that you end up getting a huge experience lead.

on paper maybe, it's a two lane map so not much of a advantage before the immortal fight starts, considering how flimsy and now without ability vikings are early game, one viking can't do much in the team fight, you probably lose the immortal fight. Late game with the respawn they are not very good in team fight either even if you group up. Then it's the matter of the multi stuns, well you can jump over but good luck microing your vikings in that space, one time hit and you're dead and you have to wait full time now. Their heroic will help but xp boost not much.

Actually Gazlowe is better here, you can push a lane close by and drop turret around your own or enemy immortal and just go on your lane business!. Abathur is probably best still.

For some reason I get the feeling Skeleton King won't be as good as some people are speculating :/

Same with every new hero release. I rarely see Butcher in hero league anymore.

I dunno what they can do about the ranged assassins/specialists at this point. Kael, Jaina, Valla, Sylv are in every match so it's hard to squeeze melee assassins in there. Even Illidong isn't as amazing anymore.

And yeah Leoric looks a bit dull TBH.

I think he looks really bad.

Sonya's one of the massive gainers this patch with Illidan brought back to earth and the new patch letting her do insane dps to the immortal and in general due to her lack of mana.

German magazine PC games compared the free-to-play grind between Heros and LoL.
LoL is more free-giving, but how much depends on the number of games you play per day.

In the beginning Heroes will give you a lot of gold and other extras, like Stimpacks, which give you extra gold and exp per game.

If you play around 3 games daily and do your bonus quests, you could probably get enough ingame gold to buy every new hero shortly after release.

If you end up really liking the game, and spending some money, the starter-bundle, and the retail bundle are great options. For 15 EUR/US$ you can get a selection of 8 heroes.

In the around 4 months I played the game, I was able to get 16 heroes, plus 5 I got through bundles.

Which region?
Look in the OP of this thread. There is a link to a google document with the IDs of US and EU gaffers. You can add yours.

Maybe I missunderstand you (sarcasm?), but the retreat ping is really visible on my end: minimap + marker + text + unique noise

I really don't understand this game sometimes. Rank 1 players in QM who solo push the entire time as Hammer, and point to their Experience Gained as the reason they are good and we are bad.

I still maintain the best thing Blizzard could do for the game would be to remove the stats screens. They add absolutely nothing to the game and lead players down blind alleys where the fail to understand what is useful and what is pointless. The new "damage Taken" stat is so ludicrously *dumb* I wonder if the people who implemented it have ever actually played the game...

We played a few games QM with a friend as jaina & kael.. They have incredible burts together.. Even lone Jojo melts in an instant.. Fun-fun-fun!

We were trying the Butcher / Tyrande combo. As long as the Butcher player remembers Tyrande actually has range limits that its hilarious fun, and post 13 Tyrande has a shockingly high amount of burst healing to help keep him up.

Played my first ranked game yesterday, on pirate bay.

Biggest massacre I've ever witnessed in this game.

I picked Tyrande, she's so broken on that map it's not even funny.

I think all of the recent heroes, with the exception of release Jaina, have been in a good spot when they dropped. It's often been the OP cries and reactionary nerfs that have put them as middling (and I say this after recently mentioning Ignite on KT needs altered - though I would prefer his power level stay the same and be spread across all levels and not piled onto one talent that can make or break games).

As for Butcher, he requires a certain kind of comp and a competent player. No surprise we don't see him a ton in HL, but that's more a symptom of being melee than how strong or not he is personally.

The melee tax is huge right now IMO.

People don't listen to it, at least at lower levels. They frequently get blown up because they aren't watching rez timers.

People don't listen to anything at lower levels.

They also don't all that often at higher ones either.

Think it's a symptom of people assuming everyone else is an idiot, even when they are the idiot.

I love the model and the character, but cannot figure out what role he occupies. Seems to be another hard engage character like Tyrael - he has the same health, a low cooldown substantial slow, an unstoppable engage tool and then a CC ultimate. His trait looks like a gimic tbh that might be handy early on but isn't going to do that much later on.

The thing is, does the game *need* more bruiser style tanks right now? It struggles to use the ones we already have, and melee in general suffers right now compared to range.

Kael'thas solo queue survival build.

Fel Infusion - Since you're going to be spamming free Living Bomb, this small heal helps
Nether Wind - Range is KT's friend as you will see at 13/16. This helps you cc more units faster from farther away.
Fusion Bomb - The start of KT's bread and butter.
Pyroblast or Al'ar - Do you need to burst a single target down or do you need fight over a fixed objective?
Flamethrower - Now KT is a flamestrike mortar unit.
Ignite - Mortar unit with cluster rounds. Team wiping potential.
Bolt of the Storm - Now you're a little harder to lock down late-game

I'd agree with that build completely with the exception of Pyroblast. It doesn't even help burst a single target down a lot of the time - it really is a weak skill, and channelling for 2 seconds for an ability that *if* it hits *may* kill a low health person just isn't worth it compared to the ludicrous damage and zoning phoenix provides.

I'd also say that the Netherwind talent at 4 is seeing more and more play in tournaments - personally I almost never go with Gathering Power anymore. Since the changes to the exp curve, early kills are a lot more important and having a reliable stun is much more important than extra oomph at 16.

Pyroblasts always hits. You're just not picking the right targets or the right time if it's missing or not killing them. That's like complaining that Al'ar is useless because someone can walk out of the AoE.

Zeratul/Illidan can dodge it, Jaina and healers can Iceblock it- it doesn't do enough damage to be worth the awkwardness.

Divine Shield.
Bolt of the Storm.
Blink
Void Prison
Sylvanas E
Iceblock (all versions)
Metamorphasis

*Any* teleport will stop it hitting if timed right, as will any invulnerability or any decent healer. If it didn't have the ridiculous 2 second cast time it would be viable, but as it is I really cannot recommend it on any level. It's not enough damage for what you have to do to make it work basically.

(The fact you can see when it's being cast on you, and if you run out of range it stops the cast, is another bad strike against it - at least triple tap once you lock on always activates!)
