Wow 18 months is a pretty long time, especially compared to the two to three months that Pete Dille gave the format.

Thanks for extending the stay of execution...

Ugh I don't want to sift through that list because a ton of those releases are also on Blu-ray and in almost all cases that's the version I'll get. Is there a shorter list of releases that are only available on HD-DVD?

just look for anything thats by Universal. And even some of those might be out next year if they go neutral.

Some of warners stuff is still not available on bluray, but I expect them to try and catch up once profile 1.1 is released. Matrix, Batman, V for Vendetta etc.

What can I say... I'm a realist. I know suckers like you are gonna drag this shit out way longer than it should take.

Those Usenet posts are very interesting, particularly the ones concerning the inevitability of a better format on the horizon. The predictions weren't off (someone mentioned HD-DVD coming within 10 years of his 1997 post, which was obviously accurate), but DVD succeeded mightily anyway.

I have my doubts that digital distribution will be readily accessible to everyone in the U.S. within 10 years, but even if it is, history may indicate that that fact really doesn't matter to the HD formats in the present. 10 years is a long time to stubbornly not buy any new movies because "something better" is on the horizon.

I think movie downloads is too much of a red herring.

... I mean look at music downloads. It's great and all, but it's not like record sales are completely dead. Not even close really.

I have no doubt, when the infrastructure is in place for homes to be connected via internet connections that can stream or at the very least, download very quickly HD movies, that traditional physical media will not be as prevalent as it once was. But I also have no doubts that it'll still continue to be pervasive, just like physical music media is now, despite many homes been equipped with internet connections that can stream and download music enmasse.

I still say that Star Wars will determine the winner... and I know George Lucas said he will wait for the next evolution and skip Blu-Ray and HD-DVD...

Mark my words... as soon as the show is ready for TV... he will release Star Wars:The Complete Saga on one format and that format will give Lucas $$$ billions and that format will win!

mrklaw

MrArseFace
I know something similar was probably said when DVD came out, but hd discs really are all you'll need resolution-wise. They even use a similar resolution for digital cinema, so it should be enough for the largest home a screens.

I don't think downloads will replace discs. IMO its more likely that on-demand will become more widespread and start to replace rentals at least

I really don't understand why Lucas is being so against releasing the movies, or why he was against DVD considering he released them about 8 times it seems on freaking Laserdisc.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
Even if all my HD-DVD drive is ever good for is Batman Begins and (hopefully) the Battlestar Galactica seasons, I can live with that.

He CAN'T determine this war. This isn't about one movie or movie series. It's the cumulative effect of multiple releases and hardware momentum that has determined the current status and will continue to determine the trends.

edit: bless wifi, this meeting is boring.

Yeah, besides if anything i think the Star Wars series as a whole is hurt more than anything by a HD release. The Episodes I-III would look fine i'm sure but IV-VI in HD would just show how aged the movies are.

Biggest series to sway support one way or the other IMO is LotR. Not a die hard fan myself (i'll watch them if they're on) but those that are are pretty damn rabid. No point in discussing that though, if it ever does come out it'll be on both formats (just maybe HD-DVD before BD).

We HD-DVD owners are a feisty bunch. On the subject of suckers, could I ask how much you paid for your BD player? :D

btw, Fry's electronics is having a great sale on BD's and HD-DVD's

11.99 for
HD-DVD
Troy
Unforgiven (mine)
V for Vendetta (not a favorite, but it's worth 11 bucks just to hear Hugo Weaving's dialogue)
A Scanner Darkly (is this a buy?)

BD
The Fugitive
Swordfish (yuck)
Corpse Bride (nice)
Superman Returns
A Scanner Darkly

It is a weird movie to say the least, I thought it was pretty good and it looks nice as hell. Probably worth it for $12.00

Thanks, I' think I'll pick it up then. I heard the image quality is amazing too, and the director's previous films have been pretty good.

Anyone remember those 500k Casino Royal BRDs for European PSN subscribers?
A few of my friends are still waiting. I got mine like 3 weeks after the launch and
today (4 month later) I received a second one, thanks Sony :lol

I'll pick up Fugitive. Although I liked A Scanner Darkly, it made me feel all creepy afterward. I'm not sure I would watch it enough to own it.

Woo i may have to go pickup swordfish and the fugitive, definitely double dipping on sword fish, the sad part being i paid more for the DVD version than i would be for the blu-ray version.

Amazon has the Toshiba HD-A2 for only $248 right now w/ the five free discs. I'm about to order one to replace my 360 add-on... seriously. $250 is nothing for a standalone.

Thats a great price Mana, sucks it cost me $50 more from them :(

Yea. I just ordered it. $250 was enough to bite the bullet for a standalone player.

Thats how I felt at $300 after my 360 died and I couldnt use my add-on anymore.I figured the price was great with the 5 free movies and it's a standalone,so it's worth it and I couldnt pass it up.

Well I don't like using the game console that much to watch movies, prefer to wear it out on games honestly. So $250 is worth it for a standalone. And I got it just in time as the purchase date cutoff for the 5 free movies is the 31st of this month. I should have the player next week and then I'll probably pick up Matrix finally.

They haven't announced a release date for the BRD Batman Begins. Maybe when TDK comes out in theaters? It's one of the many BRD discs they've showed at trade shows (like Matrix, V for Vendetta, etc) that don't have any release date or even release time frame announced.

if Warner were waiting on better DRM or profile 1.1 for more interactivity, then I'd hold out hope for some of their bigger hitters on bluray by Christmas. Batman, Matrix and V for Vendetta hopefully. Don't care about batman myself but I want the other two really badly.

Damn The Crow is coming out on Blu-ray in the UK,damn the fact it's region B :(

It might not be locked - don't know what EIV's policy is. For example, The Rock, Con Air and Crimson Tide on bluray in the UK work just fine on region A (ordered Crimson Tide myself to play on Japanese PS3)

The free movie offer actually has been extended to September of this year. I think it was in response to the BD player free disc offer. Another reason the war has been positive. :D

I'm getting:
Chronicles of Riddick
Casablanca (already have the other two in Category B)
Tomb Raider
Blazing Saddles
Perfect Storm

Sony just sent me my 5th Element. WTF am I going to do? I shipped my receiver off to Marantz yesterday for repairs.

I'm really temped to buy a receiver from Best Buy or Future Shop and return it within 30 days but that is such an asshole thing to do.

Although it sounded like you were cornered into it, Casablanca is one of my favorite movies. It's very well written, and so many lines have become part of the American lexicon that it's really great to see where those sayings originated.

Just wait till you see the upconversion quality. The A2, although not as good as the A20, makes regular DVD's look better than I thought possible.

I actually bought an upconversion unit prior to the A2, but returned in to fund the HD-DVD player purchase. It simply blew away the previous player's upconverting capabilities.

Maybe its US related, but a lot of people on the AVS forums have complained of this and some guy posted that pic of his copy.
