I can watch some of my favorite movies of all time in HD RIGHT NOW (Apollo 13, Forbidden Planet, Batman Begins, Th Big Lebowski, The Matrix, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) thanks to my HD-DVD player so I don't feel like I wasted my money at all.

You will when more Blu-ray movies come out and HD-DVD releases dry up completely. It's inevitable really.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND BLU-RAY ON NOVEMBER 13TH!!!!!!!!

http://usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-07-25-sci-fi-dvd_N.htm

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Nov. 13

Details: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (DVD, $40; Blu-ray Disc, $50). Includes three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition, and Steven Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998.

Why it's important: It's the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it's the first home video release of all three versions

What's new: An interview with Spielberg created especially for this release and a retrospective documentary.

Plus: Only on the 50 GB Blu-ray edition are new "storyboard-to-scene" comparisons and the original 1977 "Watch the Skies" featurette. Blu-ray, says David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "will add yet another new and thrilling dimension to this timeless film."

BTW, apparently the Bram Stoker's Dracula is an "Enhanced Edition" and comes out on DVD the same day as the BRD. Zoetrope Studios has it listed as that, which means it could be an extended cut.

Dude, you made a bad investment and wasted your money on that HD DVD player. You just want the format war to end up favourably for you so you can justify your mistake...

What I see as a contradiction is that BD supporters tend to be the ones that are rather negative in their posts, while most HD-DVD supporters, like myself are much better human beings... :lol

Most simply, why is it difficult for you to understand that HD-DVD owners are enjoying the movies that we've purchased, and that such a state is not going to change in the near future?

I was wondering when Microsoft would get around to droppong the price. I was hoping for $150 but $179 is not bad considering you get 5 free movies. Now's the perfect time to jump for all you guys that were feeling froggy. I know you guys want Childen of Men. Do it!

No, not really. Quite enjoyed it actually.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
It got busy after I went to sleep:

There are still people out there who have never owned a PS2?

Yeah, it's weird. Timing/money is everything. Plus, I was all over the GCN. It helped that a bunch of my friends had it, so having access to it was no problem.

So... somehow, you LOVE HD media, and you LOVE MGS, but you still can't see yourself picking up a PS3?

I don't think HD media nor MGS will be exclusive to Ps3. ;) Either way, I'm very much interested in a Ps3 as of right now, but things have to fall into place (price, games, my personal home theater situation). I'm pretty sure I won't get one this year, and so it all depends on what happens next year. I didn't say I "can't see myself picking one up". It may or may not happen.

except for that... you know... $1500 price tag.

except...you know.........it's $500 less RETAIL than what you think it is

You like MGS, and yet you never ever owned a PS2 nor plan to get a PS3?? That's....pretty idiotic, IMO.

I always had access to one. I've played through MGS Twin Snakes, MGS 2, and MGS 3 many many times now.

According to Van, it doesn't matter what any of us say anyway, so np, right?

That's not what I meant. My point was that it didn't make sense to bitch AT EACH OTHER about the format wars like any of us could determine it. I don't mean that we can't debate, but flaming people because of their current position is pointless and ignorant.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Moves to $179, Adds Five Free HD DVDs

Should've been cheaper, but that's still a good deal.

BTW, part of the announcement was tying in 300 and Heroes Vol. 1 promotions into Xbox Live:

To promote the HD DVD versions of "300" and "Heroes: Season 1," Microsoft unveiled exclusive content for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. Xbox LIVE will offer "300" on demand in HD starting Aug. 14, and is working with Warner Bros. at Comic-Con on a Bringing It Home campaign featuring "300" and other Warner Bros. properties. In advance of the street date for the "Heroes: Season 1" HD DVD boxed set, Xbox LIVE members will be able to download for free the show's pilot episode in high definition for a limited time. Members will also be able to download trailers, teaser scenes and other promotional materials highlighting the "Heroes: Season 1" boxed set on HD DVD.

Already the most affordable high-definition player available, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best solution for movie lovers seeking HD content in the highest possible resolution. The player's price reduction to $179 (U.S. ERP) continues to set the bar for value, making the Xbox 360 platform the most affordable solution for consumers seeking the broadest, most compelling selection of next-generation gaming and HD video experiences.

"With the price reduction to $179, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player continues to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox LIVE Marketplace -- both of which have a selection of the best content Hollywood has to offer. Today's announcements around '300' and 'Heroes: Season 1' are great examples of how we believe HD content can be offered to consumers."

In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba's highly successful "Perfect Offer" of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179 ERP, consumers can choose five HD DVD titles for free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season.

You aren't for real, are you? Twilight Zone: The Movie, which Spielberg directed the second segment in, is coming out on BOTH FORMATS on Ooctober 9th thanks to the movie being from Warner Brothers. By your logic, Spielberg would've stopped the release to HD-DVD because he's "Blu".

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7729

Again, only Hook and Close Encounters are on a Blu-Ray exclusive studio. The rest of his films are from Universal, Warner (only a couple), Paramount and Dreamworks.

Lets do a rundown where Spielberg's movies are in High-Def land; shall we?

Duel (1971) - HD-DVD
The Sugarland Express (1974) - HD-DVD
Jaws (1975) - HD-DVD
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Blu-Ray
1941 (1979) - HD-DVD
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Neutral
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - HD-DVD
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) (second segment) - Neutral (and coming out on both this year)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - Neutral
The Color Purple (1985)- Neutral
Empire of the Sun (1987)- Neutral
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)- Neutral
Always (1989) - HD-DVD
Hook (1991) - Blu-Ray
Jurassic Park (1993) - HD-DVD
Schindler's List (1993) - HD-DVD
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - HD-DVD
Amistad (1997) - Neutral
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Neutral
Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001) - Neutral

Begged? In upper case bold? really?

That article is in reference to a leaked release list that had some spielberg movies listed on it without dates. They were removed and the HDDVD forum had to apologize and print a retraction because AVS forum members went nuts. I dont even think ET was one of the movies listed, I think it was 1941 and Jaws (the two movies that have been showing up on Universals HD TV chanel).

I dont know how you get begged speilberg but were "shut down".

Twilight Zone is total proof that Spielberg back HD-DVD!

Ever think he might not have control over that movie like he does his others?

The tone just got nasty in here again, as it always does when there's some bit of significant bad news for HD-DVD.

Or someone runs around making up bad news.. like Spielberg being a BRD supporter, HDDVD begging him to release movies, etc.

You are not helping the situation by over exaggerating what people said and then pretending to be the peacemaker. The tone usually gets nasty everytime Petrarca goes on a trolling spree and it has little to do with good or bad news for any camp.

Exactly. It was 1941 and Jaws, the two movies that Universal recently did HD transfers for on Universal HD. The FUD about them being pulled from the list is hilarious.

Universal isn't re-releasing Jaws on DVD or HD-DVD until The Shark is Still Working is finished, then they'll do a big re-release for Jaws to help promote that LONG documentary on the movie.

ok I may have exaggerated (sp) but that just showed you how Spielberg didn't mind his movies to be included in blu-ray and yet he showed his disapproval for his movies in HD-DVD list

Mana, posting pics of your "fair and balanced" BD/HDDVD collection isn't going to cover for the FUD you like to spread, like insinuating Bill Hunt is paid off by the BDA or that Universal has some big grudge with Sony. In that regard you're no better than Petrarca and at least he seems to have some amount of grace to occasionally acknowledge when he's blowing things out of proportion.

and I NEVER pretended to be neutral or in the middle. Everybody in this thread knows where I stand.

I really don't understand why anyone in this thread would pretend to be netural. Every single one of us, even those of us that own both, have a perferred side that is clearly visible to everyone else in the thread.

Oh and here's the coolest bit!

"Through a process known as “seamless branching,” the Blu-ray version contains all three films on a single disc. The process identifies the differences between each version of the film, segments the footage and then arranges it into three unique playlists, so that footage used in all three films is only included on the disc once — minimizing space requirements."

And you can BET Spielberg is overseeing this. No way he would allow all 3 versions in a release like this without having some say.

Please please please use the awesome 70mm master. Spielberg keeps it hidden away in his house.

Does this relate to Close Encounters?

Who knows. It's widely known that he hates the ending 1980 special edition so much so that he removed the inside of the mothership from the 1998 version.

The scene of Roy going inside and seeing the inside of the mothership was forced on Spielberg. He wasn't going to be able to do the 1980 edition at all unless he put in the studio-requested shot of the inside of the mothership, and he's never liked that. He wanted it to be left up to the imagination, so he then deleted it from the 1998 version.

yup!

and here's Sony's insider comment, PaidGeek from the blu-ray forum about Close Encounter release

We have a relationship with the Spielberg team and they are involved in the release of CE3K. They are also aware of that we are releasing multiple versions using seamless branching. The original master had some issues, but our asset management department has been putting in many hours to get everything out of it there is to get. Suffice it to say that making sure that Steven is happy with the results is an absolute priority.

It is launching exclusively for Ps3, I'll give you that.
Give me what? What the hell else do you need? Kojima has said over and over that it is exclusive. He has worked SIXAXIS controls in and even went so far as to put a SIXAXIS in the ****ing game. He's also in an interview stated that he's asking for a *second* 50GB Blu-ray disc because he is being extravagant and packing so much onto it.

So, what are they going to do? Strip out all of the SIXAXIS stuff and ship the game on 7 DVDs?

Get a clue, VanMardigan. MGS4 is PS3 exclusive and if you want to play it you're going to have to buy one. But I'm sure you'll have no problem whatsoever skipping it since you, a self-proclaimed MGS fan, hasn't even owned a PS2.

BTW jjasper, I got my A2 to update through Ethernet last night very easily. Here's how I fixed it:

1. Set the date and the clock on the player.
2. Go into the Ethernet and set up your DHCP and DNA options. Hit the Confirm/Commit button and then click Ok.
3. Reboot the player.

That should allow you to connect to the server for the firmware update.

Thanks I will give that a try this weekend.

Perhaps if it doesn't sell as much as Konami would like, they'll see the light and port it to 360. I think the general consensus is that there is a good chance it will show up on 360 at some point. Control issues can always be mapped to buttons or analog sticks.

Basically HTF helped me get it to work. The HD players are basically mini HT-PCs so you do need to reboot them for any config changes to stick. Once I set the clock, reboot the player with the Ethernet settings setup it connected to the server immediately.

First tragedy, then farce.

Ok, we have enough BRD/HDDVD fanboy stuff in this thread allready.

Lets keep the PS3/360 fanboy stuff to the gaming forum.
