'Surf's Up' Coming to Blu-ray Disc
July 27, 2007

VideoBusiness.com is reporting Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release the penguin-filled CGI flick 'Surf's Up' on October 9 on Blu-ray Disc, day-and-date with the standard DVD debut.

Per Sony's Blu-ray pricing practices, 'Surf's Up' should carry an SRP of $38.95. Look for a full announcement from Sony next week with disc specs and possibly cover art.

'Pixar Short Film Collection' Coming to Blu-ray Disc

http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=645

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced 13 Pixar CGI shorts will be packaged into the 'Pixar Short Film Collection,' due in stores November 6 on Blu-ray Disc.

One of the shorts, 'Mater and the Ghost Light,' should also be available on Buena Vista's upcoming 'Cars' Blu-ray Disc release. The other shorts include 'The Adventures of Andre & Wally B,' 'Luxo Jr.,' 'Red's Dream,' 'Tin Toy,' 'Knick Knack,' 'Geri's Game,' 'For the Birds,' 'Mike's New Car,' 'Boundin',' 'Jack-Jack Attack,' 'One Man Band,' and 'Lifted.'

The 'Pixar Short Film Collection' will carry an SRP of $34.99. Keep your eyes on the disc details below over the next few weeks for extra features (if any) and high resolution cover art.

Lost: The Complete Third Season headed to Blu-ray Dec. 11

http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/07/27/lost-the-complete-third-season-headed-to-blu-ray-dec-11/

According to Home Media Retailing Magazine, Disney representatives confirmed that one of our favorite HDTV shows, Lost, will make its Blu-ray debut day-and-date with the DVD set of season three December 11th. No word on possible HD special features or price, but we can expect more details soon.

Man, I love the Pixar shorts, but if they're coming with the films, too (which I will undoubtedly buy) then that's a hefty price to pay to have them all on one disc.

Better have extras.

ZOMG....OLDBOY ON BLU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry, it's not because I'm of Korean heritage =)

Man, why are titles that are coming out on Blu Ray releasing months after the DVD release?

This is retarded.

Yeah, okay - we get Ghost Rider the same week. plz stop punching my dick. :(

lolz!

At this moment in time the only Blu-Ray that's tempting me is the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven that EL(fudge) and others have jizzed over. I personally enjoyed the theatrical release, but apparently this is a lot better.

But I read Pan's Labyrinth is due out like next month or some crap? What's this shit?! Get it out now now now!

Hence, cock punching.

Not to take anything away from Ghost Rider, but y'know - it's not a movie I'm dying to run out and buy. :p

KoH DC was filled with total disappointment.

The film was great, but goddamn companies and their double dipping asses. NO EXTRAS whatsoever on the disc.

... on the upside, if they ever do release the updated version, they'll hopefully do it with IME.

Yeah, that sort of news appears here faster than light speed. I think we got word on the Target deal as the Director of Merchandising came out of his office for coffee. :)

My Spielberg-Dreamworks-Paramount-BDA Conspiracy Theory, is Spielberg sleeping with one of BDA studios?

So I bumped into this recent article regarding Paramount/Dreamworks Splitsville

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19870910/

In one of the paragraph, it mentioned that other Hollywood studios are courting Spielberg

Still, Geffen, who advises Spielberg on business matters, made sure Spielberg could take back DreamWorks if the relationship went south. Meanwhile, Hollywood insiders say other studios already have expressed interest in working with Spielberg and a reconstituted DreamWorks.

Now who could be those other Hollywood studios? the only ones big enough are Warner, Sony, Disney, Fox

Universal is highly unlikely. In 2005 Universal, in financial trouble and still is, offered a very low price for Dreamworks, which was rejected.

A string of poorly performing films had just prompted Universal Studios (GE), which was mulling a DreamWorks acquisition, to lower its price. But getting DreamWorks was a major coup for Grey, the ber-talent manager and producer who'd never run a studio before and had been hired 11 months earlier to turn around Paramount.

That leaves the option to the other big 4 studios, 3 of which are blu-ray exclusive studios.

Looking at recent news of Paramount/Dreamworks blu-ray releases...

1. Flag of Of Our Fathers (Dreamworks movie) blu-ray is a better version than HD-DVD version

2. Face/Off blu-ray will have more extras and better audios than HD-DVD version

3. Spielberg gave permission to Sony to release Close Encounters blu-ray with extra contents, where a few months back he asked Universal to take off a few of his movies from HD-DVD promotion list.

4. Blades of Glory (Dreamworks movie) will have better version/audio than HD-DVD

..., is it possible that Spielberg sleeping with one of BDA studios?

Word is, Disney is VERY VERY keen to land Dreamworks. They have the funds, and reputation and since Dreamworks also does animation, Disney would be the ideal fit.

Spielberg was ROYALLY pissed at the handling of Transformers' revenue by Paramount. He felt insulted.

I'm not surprised. I heard that Jerry Bruckheimer and Spielberg are really close. Sony would be my second guess, Warner is my third pick

I don't know anything about revenues, but the article did say that Transformers is Spielberg/Dreamworks's baby and yet, Paramount promoted it as if their own

Uhh, he didn't find this news, he was commenting on it. It wasn't presented in a "Hey look guys, new sales info!" kind of way. He is welcome to comment on whatever he damn well pleases, just like I am and just like you are. I really ****ing doubt you would have called him out (for no reason) if it had been a good HD DVD week and he were making images supporting your cause.

Depends on the size of the TV and how close you're sitting to it, but 720p is great for most purposes (see: Resistance, Motorstorm). I'm sure dark10x from the HD thread has some more detailed info, but unless you're sitting quite close and have a big TV, you probably won't notice the difference.

I remember someone asking earlier in this thread to have a list of all the exclusive titles available on each format, a guy compiled it (until August 2007) on AVS:

Nice listing of exclusives.. HD-DVD has more movies I'm interested in btw. Just say Children of Men... what an amazing film.
---
Could anyone explain to me what these numbers mean?

1. Premonition Blu-ray 100.00
2. Casino Royale Blu-ray 60.41
3. Planet Earth Blu-ray 56.41
4. POTCDMC Blu-ray 48.55
5. TFE Blu-ray 45.24
6. Ghost Rider Blu-ray 42.94
7. Planet Earth HD-DVD 39.62
8. POTCCOBP Blu-ray 39.39
9. Apocalypto Blu-ray 39.87
10. Resident Evil Blu-ray 31.79

What does 100.00 mean as apposed to 31.79? Is it like a sales ration, i.e. 100:31.79? Seems rather odd way to list sales.

It's probably because listing it as the actual sales figures would be flat out embarassing for both sides.

Target Not Going Blu-ray Exclusive

http://gear.ign.com/articles/808/808350p1.html

July 26, 2007 - Earlier today word was spreading on the internet that the large retail chain Target had made Blu-ray its exclusive choice in the HD format war for selling in its brick-and-mortar outlets. The HD-DVD promotions group has now issued a statement on the news, noting that previous reports were in err as to the fact that an exclusive agreement had been made. Instead, the HD-DVD group points out, Sony has done nothing more than purchase an end cap at retail, as HD-DVD has done in stores like Best Buy and Circuit City.

An official statement was made by Ken Graffeo, the executive vice president of HD Strategic Marketing for Universal Home Entertainment:

"Target will continue to carry the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive as well as HD DVD titles so we don't see much of a change in their plans to carry both formats. In fact, they continue to sell Toshiba HD DVD players on their web site. Sony appears to have bought an end cap, just as HD DVD has in retail stores such as BestBuy and Circuit City.

What's important is that stand alone HD DVD players are still much more affordable than Blu-ray players, plus they offer a better experience - just compare titles appearing in both formats like "300" or "Blood Diamond." Ultimately consumers will be the ones that determine what format provides the greatest value."

The HD-DVD group has been somewhat embattled of late as Sony has achieved some recent successes in distributing Blu-ray through rental outlets, first securing an exclusive position at Blockbuster (story) and then cutting a profit sharing deal with Rentrak (story). Had a major retail outlet like Target actually gone totally Blu-ray exclusive it would have been a bad day indeed for HD-DVD.

Ahh... I see what you mean, but then again, it isn't either side that is publishing the numbers. So I don't understand why an independent sales tracking company would care.

I remember someone asking earlier in this thread to have a list of all the exclusive titles available on each format, a guy compiled it (until August 2007) on AVS:

movie list

So basically Universal has been pumping it's catalog titles out, while the blu-ray exclusive studios are barely playing their hands yet, and HD-DVD is still getting trounced.

I'm thinking it has more to do with the fact BD has higher capacity.

regarding why blu-ray has better versions maybe

but I'm pretty sure that there's a talk between Spielberg/Dreamworks with one of the BDA studios. It's a fact that Spielberg is not happy with Paramount and wants to get out

It's just the HD group's spin on it. The details remain the same-- only BD players + the 360 add-on in Target brick-and-mortar stores come Fall.

yup the same spin by HD group, it's like Target or BJ don't matter, so it's good news for HD-DVD

The insinuation is that in the near future there will be higher res sets. I think that is a possibility with 70"+ tvs. I can definately see 100" LCD tvs with 4520x2540 resolution in 5-6 years. However, in most homes, 50 inch is ideal. For that size, anything higher than 1920x1080 and you're not going to see much of an improvement.
