Week ended 8/19:
Blu-Ray: 71%
HD-DVD: 29%

now can we have the thread title changed?

those number are pre paramount shock and awe though.. not that I think it'll make a huge difference, or any difference at all until some releases actually come out.

Wow, pretty early for the numbers. It's only 10!

Anyways, good showing for blu-ray.

I'm surprised 300 has such staying power, but it still has yet to see any real competition.

Wow. 7:3

It'll be weeks (months?) before Paramount BD stock flushes out.

I for one quickly ordered Sleepy Hollow & The Warriors the same day the bomb^H^H^H^H news dropped.

Well, that's just last week. Pre-Paramount announcement. I think everyone is waiting for Transformers to see how it competes with the BD exclusives. Depending on when it's released of course.

I really doubt there is anything that could be done to change Paramount/Universal's stance at this point. If Paramount has a contract through 2008 I would be willing to bet that Universal has something similar. I would also assume that Disney and Fox are under a similar contract. We are stuck in a stalemate in that regard.

Yeah, which is why I don't really care if WB goes exclusive. Uni migght only have a contract through this year, but Paramount being HD-DVD means more than Uni did, and Uni was enough to stall the whole takeover.

Paramount BD outsell HD DVD counterparts. Did anyone ask Paramount about that during those interview I am interested in what their response would be (of course we all know that $50million is more than they will ever make on BD's in 2007-2008 but you know they wouldn't actually say that).

Anyway I am actually suprised that 300 outsold Wild Hogs I thought for sure it would be #1 this week.

Man that close enounters set looks nice, I will be buying it day 1.

This week's numbers (released next friday) will be even more towards blu-ray since there was no HD DVD release and 2 catalog / 2 new release titles for BD. Also I think BD will get a boost from people snatching up Paramount discs.

The week after will be *very* interesting because that's when Heroes and Blades of Glory come out.

The problem is, HD DVD players are still slow, buggy and less reliable than Upconverting players. I don't know about you guys but I've never had a problem playing a DVD. I've had 3 HD DVDs messed up out of package and 1 Blu-ray.

J6P will simply return the player at the 1st sign of dissatisfaction.

I've heard that HD-DVD disc would freeze once in a while in these players, but does the same thing hold true for regular DVDs?

Is that a dual format (hence no blue border) or a second disc with bonus features?

Bonus material on the second. The main disc is supposed to be a 50GB disc with three versions "seamlessly branched."

Man, I am going to be the picky mother fucker here and say that I hope that Close Encounters box is Blu-ray case height and not DVD case height... it sure looks DVD-box sized to me, though.

Don't make my shelf look janky, Sony. Please.

Three versions?!? OMG!

Original Theatrical Cut
Special Edition Cut that Spielberg hates (the studio forced him to put shit in it he didn't want)
Collector's Edition Cut that removed the stuff Spielberg hated from the Special Edition, but still includes the new footage he liked.

i.e. Speilberg hates hates hates the shots inside the space ship at the end.

Also, Anchorman = awesome. You are wrong.

Steve Carrell + Will Ferrel + Paul Rudd + Fred Willard + Seth Rogen = absolute win.

Paul Rudd might be the most underrated comedic actor out there. I swear he was the best person in Anchorman, 40 year old virgin and knocked up. Also, shape of things is awesome.

Hi just had my account activated and thought Id make my first post here as I've been reading this thread for a while.

I wasn't intending to buy Blu-Ray movies initially, but after I got my PS3 and Sony sent me a free copy of Casino Royale, I was hooked. Ive been buying them ever since.

I was disappointed to hear about Paramount but even with them bought off, Blu-Ray's exclusive line up is still miles better.

Great sales figures this week

71:29

Hopefully they'll keep up over the coming weeks :D

petraca, did you create a second account just so someone would agree with you? :lol

Also, Im sure the box height is the same. I thought the same thing about the Matrix sets and it worked out the same height.

I can't even imagine how you'd extract decent 3D from 2D visuals.

I would guess a combination of what Faf stated, plus motion vectors. Static images will present some problems, but it should be interesting none-the-less.

If they also get this to work with the tech used for the upcoming 3D movies, it will be pretty ace. Basically, in-home 3D for theatrical 3D movies ... as well as simulated (which will likely be hit-or-miss) for standard fare.

Numbers will not swing in HD-DVDs favor for quite a while if ever. The announcement was a start to attempt to pull it back but it will take a few months of big and new HD-DVD software to change it dramatically if at all.

Wasn't WB looking to pursue their own HD format at one time, based on standard red-laser DVD and just VC-1/H264 level compression schemes? They should ditch BD and HDDVD altogether and bring that back ;)

No, August 28th is Dawn of the Dead and Heroes.

Maybe Anchorman got funny after the first 20 minutes. I didn't even finish it. And I like all those guys, especially Ferrel and Carey.

I give props to lots of HD DVD only releases, so I'm OK with running this one down. :)

Aside from the newscaster street fight and Jack Black's cameo, I thought Anchorman was absolutely horrible and unfunny.

Probably not. I had planned on getting Van Wilder since even though it isn't a great movie I still liked it but apparently it has a horrible transfer so I can't justify it when I already own the DVD.

Nothing for me until September 11 when Black Book and Wings of Honneamise come out.

Some people have said stores recieved the. They were recalled I believe, but it is possible to get one if you try hard enough.
