Name recognition is important, but when your product is being associated with an old technology it does not work in your favor.
I'm sure Toshiba and the HD DVD promotional group don't mind that the "old" technology is the most successful video format in history. :lol If a product is hugely successful, I would say that it is advisable to take advantage of name recognition.

You must have been very upset when Sony used the Playstation name not only once, but twice for their future game systems. :lol

no it's more fun this way, fanboys screaming, bickering all in one thread!!!

TMO: That conclusion is useless without comparing it to releases. Of course sales are off-- not nearly as many big releases in the last couple of months. 300 stood out in part because it was the only thing going for a while.

Wait til, well, this month, when all the big Q4 releases start coming out.

indeed. I'm done with this thread, it's too much bullshit to wade through.

I'm not sure that would help any, as supporters from both sides would invade both threads. It would simply add to the confusion.

oh, I was talking about the users bullshit. I'm done with blu-ray/hd-dvd threads period; too much drama for something so negligible.

Thanks for the list guys. I think it's safe to say that both formats are pretty equal movie wise. With who having the better support coming down to matter of opinion. Personally out of this list I would/will definitely purchase these if I could(regardless of format):

2 Shrek the Third P/DW $321,012,359
3 Transformers P/DW $310,651,240
5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB $286,953,794
6 300 WB $210,614,939
7 The Bourne Ultimatum Uni. $203,484,905
9 The Simpsons Movie Fox $178,697,093
12 Live Free or Die Hard Fox $133,638,992
14 Rush Hour 3 NL $123,145,000
15 Blades of Glory P/DW $118,245,842

That's 5 HD-DVD exclusive Vs. 2 Blu-Ray exclusive. Of course this is just my opinion and could change next year of course, but right now HD-DVD has more of the movies that I want.

Haha... I see what you did there.

Creating your own little list and then bolding the part you really hoped people would read. Taking a leaf right out of HD-DVD marketing's book.

Why rent 4 and buy 3 when 4 > 3???

i haven't seen 4 yet--i'll probably buy it later if i really like it--but i honestly can't imagine it being better than 3. i do hope it's better than 2, though.

First tragedy, then farce.
Sales being down isnt good.. but you have to figure.. the big guns come out in theaters in the summer. Not on video. I would expect a huge sales spike this time of year when the big summer movies hit video.

Plus, when something is new, you run out and but 10 movies. After a few months you buy 1-2 movies a month.. and it was new to everyone around Xmas last year.

Anybody expecting to change consumer opinion with this thread is an idiot aswell as anyone thinking that's what I was trying to do with my post. I was merely posting the movies I was most looking forward to. Which goes along with why I currently support HD-DVD at the moment.

It's not.

Also, Blu-Ray version of DH4 will be PG-13, whereas the DVD version will be unrated.

Certainly not at blogs that do brisk business in sensationalism, nor TME who likes to get every bit of anti-Blu propaganda he can out into the world.

"HD DVD" is actually a good name thanks to some clever work by Toshiba's ad agency.

Check out the new trailer at thelookandsoundofperfect.com I think it is.

The voiceover says a line like, "Your HDTV just isn't complete... without HD DVD."

I think that makes the point pretty nicely, using terms the customer is already familiar with.

However it can also lead to problems like customer confusion.

I didn't want to bring that up but yes, something like that could happen. Having combo discs out there (and only a few of them) just adds to what is playable and not.

You guys are referring to the Planet Earth HD DVD, which spurred those comments on Amazon.

i don't know what it was, but something about customers being confused thinking their discs couldn't play on their old DVD players.

Well it doesn't seem to be helping them much now does it?

I think differentiating the new formats from DVD is more important than then the familiarity with the DVD brand. J6P still thinks his DVDs are high def. Bluray is clearly its own format.

In the grand scheme of things its probably not that big of a factor, but its interesting to me as a person that runs a marketing company :p

There's really no evidence of it either hurting or helping really. It's likely to have had both effects, although I would believe that the effect has been much more positive than negative.

Great. Well i called it and said that that thread would be locked.

I can agree with locking it honestly.
As good as intentions are, it would degenerate in no time as some news item would get posted with a little bit of spin added from one side and the other side would feel the need to counter.
Best thing to do is just keep it in here and use the ignore list to pick and choose how to go.

So I'm looking to purchase some kubrick movies that are coming out next month. I see that they are coming out both on Bluray and HD-DVD. Is there any reason to purchase one format over the other on these discs? Anyone have more detailed information on these releases that might shed some light on which format to choose?

Just look at the exclusives coming up and choose from there. If you have a 360 the add-on is obviously the cheapest option.

Kind of sad really when "it's the cheapest" is the main selling point for hd that comes to people's minds.

Anyway I would wait a little while longer until the specs are released for the films and base off of that.
No spin, no agenda just which ever has the best specs.

Before some red head gets a hard on and posts this :
"In light of recent comments made regarding high definition stand-alone video players sales, Toshiba would like to reiterate its continued industry leading sales figures. Based on July data from NPD, Toshiba had a 55% market share year to date in high definition stand alone player sales followed by all Blu-ray companies at a combined 42%; the final 3 percent is held by dual format players.

While the competition may claim leadership based on one month of data, Toshiba has had continued sales leadership in every month since the original HD DVD players launched 17 months ago.

Toshiba is and continues to be a top seller at retailers such as Amazon, most recently reaching #1 on the site last week. As third generation players begin to come to market at the end of this month, Toshiba has full confidence that it will continue its momentum and lead in player sales. Additional information HD DVD and Toshiba’s players can be found at http://www.toshibahddvd.com"

My favorite part is the "top seller at Amazon" bit and how they have been first since they launched 17 months ago...but if I remember they had leadership in movies then too but that seemed to change...

Then HD media is doomed. Or at least put on hold until 2009 or whenever the FCC pulls the plug on SD.

If the mass market cannot grasp these simple concepts, high-def movies simply won't take off. We already know that most average joes couldn't tell you the difference between HD and SD if they were sitting side by side. Or more likely, they just don't care.

HD movie adoption and HD console adoption are definitely hindered by the higher cost and people's complete ignorance and indifference to the benefits over SD.

Oh well. I've got mine.

EXACTLY. I found some people I speak with who are not regulars of forums or even aware a hd format war is going, often are confused about hd dvd, because of the word dvd. My co-worker thought that the hd dvds can play in her regular dvd player and i had to explain she needed the ones with dvd on one side and hd dvd on the other, but it would be waste of money if she did not have an hd player.

People at my job see me as the "gadget guy" or "playstation/video game" guy so i get a lot of funny questions about a lot of electronics.

Out of the top 15 movies this year so far I plan to get these on high definition formats:

2 Shrek the Third P/DW $321,012,359 4,172 $121,629,270 4,122 5/18 8/9
3 Transformers P/DW $310,651,240 4,050 $70,502,384 4,011 7/3 -
5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB $286,953,794 4,285 $77,108,414 4,285 7/11
6 300 WB $210,614,939 3,280 $70,885,301 3,103 3/9 7/12
7 The Bourne Ultimatum Uni. $203,484,905 3,701 $69,283,690 3,660 8/3 -
8 Ratatouille BV $201,321,358 3,940 $47,027,395 3,940 6/29
11 Knocked Up Uni. $148,192,755 2,975 $30,690,990 2,871 6/1 -
15 Blades of Glory P/DW $118,245,842 3,467 $33,014,202 3,372 3/30 7/12

Didn't really care for Spider-Man 3 or Pirates 3 enough to buy them. I own Pirates 1 on Blu-Ray and I'd buy Spider-Man 1 on it too if they sold it separately.
