He never said he was better than others.

And just because you didn't like the movie doesn't make it suck. I didn't like 300 but that doesn't make it sucky.

Just STFU.

So, can anyone tell me what's the status of the HD war?? I mean, what studios are with whom?? This thread is far too big to wade through, that's why I ask.

HD DVD:Universal Pictures, Paramount/Dreamworks Pictures

BD:Fox, Disney and Sony.

Warner is neutral with (some would say) a slight bias towards HD DVD.

Fixed. New Line and Warner are both part of Time Warner, just like Paramount and Dreamworks are two heads of the same beast, for example.

Tartan is Blu-ray exclusive, and Magnolia Films is format neutral.

Speaking of Tartan...

Tartan has confirmed the 11/6 release of Oldboy on Blu-ray (SRP $34.95) which comes complete with three audio commentaries, deleted scenes with optional commentary and the standard DVD version as well, which adds 6 featurettes, and cast and crew interviews.

I had always wondered the same thing though ... where did the 51 number come from.

17 GB per layer, times 3...

man this movie is so awesome, wth THREE commentaries too! Is this a North American release? Day one purchase for sure, or whenever I can get it.

Man, I already have the original Tartan Oldboy DVD and the new 3-disc set that comes in the steel case with a bunch of extras no one in their right mind would sit though and other junk, and I STILL want the Blu-ray.

I must be stopped.

Picked up the 360 HD-DVD drive today with a few HD-DVD movies. Even though I prefer Blu-Ray (hence not bothering to buy a stand alone unit) at least I won't be left in the lurch by the fuckin' retarded format war.

FINALLY jumping into the HD scene with a 40'' 1080p Samsung LCD + PS3.

What's the ONE HD Blu-Ray movie that will absolutely blow my fucking face off with its awesome PQ and general amazing-ness?

Please don't list a bunch of movies. I want ONE. I want the first thing I put into my PS3 and display on my new TV make me want to take a dump on the respectable 27'' SD set I've been using since I went to college...

Two choices for perfect demo material:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (PCM)
Corpse Bride

Wow, I'm a total BRD noob. :(

If I'm understanding correctly, there are some BR titles that are region B, but will still play in Region A (US) players?

I'm assuming these are probably not actually Region B, but sold in "region b", but the disc itself is region free?

(Case in point, research indicates that The Rock (Ed Harris, Nic Cage, Sean Connery) is a title I could import...and play on by BR player...right?)

Titles without region lock are Region ABC and yes they work on any player.

My first thought was the NIN concert. It's absolutely spectacular in HD, with razor-sharp visuals and amazing audio. If you're a fan, this is a great choice.

Otherwise, Corpse Bride is stunning and of course Planet Earth and Apocalypto are excellent, too.

:) I understand the math ... its just weird considering the prior spec was 15 per layer.

Its almost like they needed to get 50 + 1 (shock) :p

looks like the 1st gen toshibas have the capability to optically read the tl discs and for some PERL data reading reason, TL 51 may actually be easier for players to read because of optical distortion and interference reasons. The issue kinda is getting clear data from the laser bounching off the third layer and for some reason the pitch and data density on 17GB layers produce less interference, or easier to correct for , than the 15GB discs.

Is that the scene where
he eats the live octopus?
I saw that scene, it wasn't that bad.

BTW when they say the standard DVD versions is included, is it two discs total in the case? What's the point?

I recommend Curse of the Golden Flower for its colors. Or you can peruse the list at avs: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316

They are putting the pits of the disc closer, allowing data to be bunched up closer, using a slight change in angle to the laser allows them to read it, making each layer capable of storing 17gb.

The problem appears to be that the 3rd layer is very difficult to read with the existing laser.

Until I see it in action, it's vaporware.

I hear that the Matrix is coming to Blu-ray. Costco has the ultimate matrix box set on HD-DVD. I have players for both formats. Is there any reason to wait for the blu-ray? Does the HD-DVD set have any glaring flaws?

There's no telling when The Matrix will finally hit Blu-Ray. There's really no reason to wait as the transfers will be exactly the same between the two (and yes it looks incredible).

OPEN SEASON hands down demo material to blow your shorts off..
(pass on planet earth, great doc but PQ is very uneven-amazing sometimes and poor others)

http://www.tvpredictions.com/warner091007.htm

Warner Bros is considering a "lucrative offer" to back HD DVD exclusively in the high-def disc format war.
That's according to an article in today's Los Angeles Times.

The Times writes that "Hollywood insiders" say Warner is "mulling over a lucrative offer that could bring such popular titles as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into the HD DVD camp." The newspaper doesn't say, but the offer is presumably from Toshiba, the leading backer of the HD DVD format.

While a Warner switch would seriously boost HD DVD's chances in the high-def format war, the Times reports that the Blu-ray side is also busy trying to line up exclusive deals with studios and retailers.
