Odd that 300 BD is still so high while 300 HD DVD sold half of it what it sold on blu-ray. /cue van "300 bd was in the ps3 wheelhouse"
Yea, but still even We are Marshal are right there together on both formats.

Holy shit! 300 on Blu-ray 2:1 over the HD DVD version still?

I gotta say I am surprised that We Are Marshall sold better on HD DVD then blu-ray. That doesn't happen too often.

Same with Smallville but the BD release was delayed a couple of days.

Judging by the size of the HD DVD version of We Are Marshall's lead, it's pretty safe to assume that the PS3 effect will start as early as next week and the We Are Marshall BRD will pull ahead permanently.

I'm sure We Are Marshall would have performed better on Blu-ray this week had Troy not come out at the same time... as someone who can't really justify buying more than one BRD a week, I'm sure there are a ton of people out there like me and they just went with Troy instead.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
New movies that didn't make the top ten:

Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut (Warner)
Deliverance (Warner)
Elizabeth (Universal)
For Love of the Game (Universal)
Jailhouse Rock (Warner)
The Last Starfighter (Universal)
Viva Las Vegas (Warner)
A Few Good Men (Sony)
House of 1000 Corpses (Lionsgate)

And with Casino Royale up there, we can pretty much assume these movies are about 5k and under. Some likely less than 1k. You wonder why bother at this point for some of these releases.

Top 10 chart for Sept 28, 2007:

2u728a1.jpg

Impressions:

- Difficult to interpret numbers this week without physical sales data. Total Hi-Def sales appear to be up this week due to the lack of previous week's lower-ranking titles and the arrival of some new ~10% or higher titles. However, it is unlikely that each individual title is actually tracking with high numbers since Troy BD, the largest title this week, is tracking alongside 300 BD and it is unlikely that 300 BD sales went upward this far down the cycle.
- New BD titles claim 40% of the top 10, while HD-DVD claims 17%.
- Casino Royale seems to be nearing the end of its life cycle. Expect it to be gone by next week.
- Top 10 share is approximately 64.1:35.9, which is almost 1% off from official week numbers. Titles below top 10 this week may be insignificant.

Oh and added bonus: BD sales this coming week at Canadian Best Buys and Future Shop. Expect to see higher numbers for this coming week when they're posted.

DJK: Judging from the past two to three weeks, this is the only week that 300 BD has outsold 300 HD by a solid 2:1. It was 10:7 two weeks ago, and 10:6 last week.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
HD DVD has a big release this week:

HD DVD

* Evening (Universal)
* Freedom: 2 (Bandai Visual)
* The Getaway (1994) (Universal)
* Gods and Generals (Warner)
* Gothika (Warner)
* Knocked Up (Universal)
* Next (Paramount)
* Patch Adams (Universal)
* The Wild Bunch (Warner)
* Wyatt Earp (Warner)

Blu Ray

* Black Book (Sony)
* Gods and Generals (Warner)
* Gothika (Warner)
* Memoirs of a Geisha (Sony)
* Tekkonkinkreet (Sony)
* Underworld (Sony)

* The Wild Bunch (Warner)
* Wyatt Earp (Warner)

Exclusives bolded I'm thinking 58/42 for next week.

Because high def makes a difference in all content*
Movies like A Few Good Men, For Love of the Game and Deliverance deserve high def regardless of sales.

*provided its original media benefits from upgrade to high def.

While that would be seriously awesome to have a jumbo projector..

1) No way will I be allowed to do that.
2) Cost too much.
3) New bulb to be replaced.
4) No way will I be allowed to do that.

:lol

I was deciding whether to buy a projector or a TV, so I borrowed a projector from work and hooked it up. And while watching a huge ass projection is undeniably cool, I found the hassle too much, plus I ran into the 57" DLP I fell in love with and bought. Once 1080p projectors drop in price, I'll probably look into that again, but I'll have to set aside a room in my house for that.

I heard that the BD shipment delay that affected Smallville also affected We Are Marshall. So if people couldn't buy those titles last week then I expect them to make a dent in next week numbers.

Isn't 300 a pack-in with standalone HDDVD players now? Why would people buy a movie they already have?
EDIT: though I accidentally did that with Children of Men, lolz

I will agree to that. Knocked Up will pull in some big numbers IMO. The week after though is Fantastic Four which should swing things back to Blu.

That guy you've been arguing with in the Smackdown forum? He might be just be Rush Limbaugh.

Okay, so he probably isn't. But apparently the conservative talk show host is a high-def disc early adopter -- and a dual-format supporting one, at that.
ADVERTISEMENT

According to a transcript from Limbaugh's Wednesday radio show, the host says he has both an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player, and that whenever a new release comes out, "I just go get 'em. I have stacks of them I haven't seen yet."

Limbaugh's remarks came as a preamble to a seemingly off-the-cuff endorsement of the German film 'The Lives of Others' (a recent Blu-ray release), which he hailed as "the kind of movie that Hollywood ought to be making."

Limbaugh went on to call the film "one of the most accurate portrayals of life under socialism and communism that you'll see."

Yes, it's a slow news day here at High-Def Digest...

Wow, I actually agree with Rush for once. The Lives of Others is an outstanding film that is very stirring. It looked pretty amazing in SD, but I'd watch it again or buy it, if available in HD.
It is available in HD.

The regular cut looked great in HDDVD.

Except the special effects look HORRID. They look so cheap in HD. The ships sailing especially looks about 10 years older than it is. The statue of Appolo in the temple thing that the Trojans meet in looks really bad too.

Im still interested because the first movie was decent (despite my complaints about trying to turn a myth into a psuedo-historical epic).

I think Im going to buy the new cut of alexander..

its getting pretty favorable reviews, and I allways kinda liked the theatrical version.

Like it or not, Rush has a lot of influence ... it's good to hear he's a big proponent of HD video, even if its for a '2 format future'.
Oh I totally agree, theres a whole sector of wealthy conservatives that listen to him and if he is shilling out high definition to them and some of them buy one or both formats it is a good thing.

I just thought it was funny that they actually said: "yes it is a slow news day at high def digest."

... If there's any metal you could probably cut with a 'mere sword' it'd be solid gold. Gold is very soft unless alloyed.

No wonder I failed chemistry in High school. I didn't know that. I figured a statue made of gold would be damn hard.

On another note, my luck with electonics continues. Why do I even bother!!! My new Onkyo 805 cuts out sound through HDMI. It just started doing this today. I changed the cable, tried a different input but it looks to be some sort of a problem with the receiver itself. Amazing! Looks like another trip to Buffalo to return this one.

As Geneon Entertainment is going out of business, Bandai Visual USA's release of Wings of Honneamise on Blu-ray and HD-DVD (distributed by Geneon) is going to be hard to find. If you have any interest in it, I suggest ordering it as soon as you can.

Same thing goes for Freedom on HD-DVD.

Is Disney releasing The Jungle Book on Blu Ray? Geeze how amazing would that transfer be if they put it up to par like they did all their other ones - and the sound quality - plus I love that movie.

Interesting article from

http://www.allthingshidef.com

I found it telling that of all the new players announced at CEDIA, only one company announced players that support profile 1.1,” he said, pointing to two Denon players, the DVD-3800BDCI and DVD-2500BTCI, which are slated for release in 2008. “Also, there is no ‘sunset clause’ on existing players, so any player shipping before [Oct. 31] can continue shipping as a [version] 1.0 player indefinitely
I think that BD has a chicken-and-egg problem,” Gregorich said, adding most existing Blu-ray players won’t be upgradeable, with the exception of the PlayStation 3, because of its high-powered central processing unit. “The studios don’t want to include features that people with current players can’t use, and the hardware manufactures don’t want to make players when there is no software to support the features.

My question is how are these studios checking to see if their 1.1 capable disks work on 1.1 players when there are no players to test them on.. :lol I suppose it's through emulation, or their own development systems, but those are not completely the same as real world players.

I especially love this last quote:
And for picture-in-picture features, a workaround is possible without a second video recorder, due to the larger capacity of Blu-ray, Gregorich noted: two copies of the same film can be included on one BD-50, one where the secondary picture is burned into the film, the second including only the standard film.
Encode the entire film twice to allow for Pip.... Such an option has already been taken in previous BD releases, but it seems very wasteful... Wow..

I've noticed recently that Walmarts near me have pretty much dropped HD movies altogether, while Best Buy has been expanding Blu-ray's section.

Best Buy in Canada expended both BD and HD equally. And noticed this afternoon at my local Wal-Mart that they recalled a bunch of HD/BD movies. Now the hi-def section looks really pitiful.

There were, but MI3 allready does this. During the PIP commentary with Cruise they will actually stop playing the movie so they can go full screen on the director and cruise to continue talking about the last scene.. then that will shrink back down to the PIP window and the film will continue.

Too bad I didnt care for the movie, its HD extras were really slick.

So I tried this earlier since I actually own MI3 but had never bothered to run the video commentary because I didn't know it did anything special. It's a small PiP with Tom Cruise and the director, but then right at the beginning they want to keep talking about the intro, so the movie pauses and the PiP turns into full screen (it appeared HD to me). When they're ready to continue, the image becomes small again and the movie continues to play. That was pretty neat. There was a small pause while the PiP switched over, but it was very interesting, plus the commentary was lively.

I know in Heroes, the iME takes over the right part of the screen while the show shrinks, but it never actually breaks away from the show itself. Another cool note is that in Freedom Vol. 1, you can actually move around the PiP window to any part of the screen. I wish more movies would allow that.

FS: Buy two for 40$.

It's in the flyer, but I'm too lazy to check it online because, well, I don't get the paper anymore and I hate enabling various JS things just to look at it. :lol
