As Geneon Entertainment is going out of business, Bandai Visual USA's release of Wings of Honneamise on Blu-ray and HD-DVD (distributed by Geneon) is going to be hard to find. If you have any interest in it, I suggest ordering it as soon as you can.

Same thing goes for Freedom on HD-DVD.

I'm not sure what this means. Does that mean that there won't release the rest of the Freedom series?

Also, they would stop production on WoH HD DVD/Blu Ray as well. Couldn't Bandai continue to publish those titles? I don't know much about anime and their publishers etc. so I'm hoping you'll clarify.

If I remember correctly, it might have been:

BB: Buy two, get 15$ off
FS: Buy two for 40$.

It's in the flyer, but I'm too lazy to check it online because, well, I don't get the paper anymore and I hate enabling various JS things just to look at it. :lol

Okay, thanks. I checked the fliers online and if it's just the movies listed, pass.

Interesting article from

My question is how are these studios checking to see if their 1.1 capable disks work on 1.1 players when there are no players to test them on.. :lol I suppose it's through emulation, or their own development systems, but those are not completely the same as real world players.

I especially love this last quote:

Encode the entire film twice to allow for Pip.... Such an option has already been taken in previous BD releases, but it seems very wasteful... Wow..

While the situation is lame, there were actually more players shown at Cedia iirc ... including one that was 2.0 compatible I believe.

Any sort of Blu-ray FUD would be very interesting for you.

It's normal QA practice to test discs on a range of consumer machines before release. It was a perfectly reasonable question.
I remember getting an e-mail from a QA tester at Sony in the late-90s that said, "coming soon... much Streisand. Pray for me :/" I LOL'd

From the sound of things, you'll only be able to buy them directly from BVUSA, which means they'll be really expensive.

I see. From what I had read, there were only the Denon players. Many people were really rather disappointed when Sony themselves announce only 1.0 players. I don't recall a 2.0 player being announced. Who is producing it?

They really should release them BEFORE the holiday season though, since a good number of both BD and HD DVD players are going to be sold this holiday. Then again, I suppose most people are buying the PS3 for BD playback, and those are likely to be 2.0 compliant at some time.

All I know is the longer they delay, the more splintered the userbase is. Then again, I understand that they are also trying to lower the cost of the players, so adding all these new items (flash memory, an additional video decoder, etc.,) won't help them get BD players to mainstream prices...

Another thing is, if this transition to new specs is as easy as most BDA spokesmen say, why the delay? They already postponed the date once, and even with the later date, no CE manufacturers have a 1.1 player ready for this year. The silence speaks volumes of the haphazard way the BDA has managed the specifications.

This may not be all (beyond the Denon)

Profile 1.1

Marantz BD8002
I could have sworn Funai showed a prototype

Profile 2.0 (ie. BD Live)

LG BH200 Super Blu Player (ie Universal)
Daehoo DBP-1000 (shown at IFA)

Wow. I know that Marantz is a high-end brand, but that's more than ten times how much I paid for my player.. I'd like to see the prices of the Profile 2.0 players. :lol

Anyone else picking up Dawn of the Dead or Day of the Dead this coming 2nd? I'm pretty excited, the series is one of my favorites. Evil Dead 2 is also making this a great week after a rather large dry spell for me.

Yes on Dawn and Day, but probably a no on Evil Dead 2. I love the movie to death, but all the reviews have stated it looks no different than the DVD versions and I own two of those so far. I suggest trying out House of a 100 Corpse, looks and sounds amazing on BD.

So I tried this earlier since I actually own MI3 but had never bothered to run the video commentary because I didn't know it did anything special. It's a small PiP with Tom Cruise and the director, but then right at the beginning they want to keep talking about the intro, so the movie pauses and the PiP turns into full screen (it appeared HD to me). When they're ready to continue, the image becomes small again and the movie continues to play. That was pretty neat. There was a small pause while the PiP switched over, but it was very interesting, plus the commentary was lively.

I know in Heroes, the iME takes over the right part of the screen while the show shrinks, but it never actually breaks away from the show itself. Another cool note is that in Freedom Vol. 1, you can actually move around the PiP window to any part of the screen. I wish more movies would allow that.

one of the cooler hdi movies. i love that paramount is really pushing this stuff too.

Reviews for Evil Dead 2 hasn't been too bad actually.

2nd also says its pretty mediocre.

Yeah, but the first and second reviewers have no credibility because they didn't even mention the Book of the Dead vs. THX DVD issue.

TAJ said:
Did you actually read the third review? (or see any of the screenshot comparisons that have been done?)
I'm definitely passing on this one and Halloween. Dawn and Day are buys.

Thing is, I actually never owned the SD versions of Evil Dead 1 and 2 (only owned Army of Darkness). So not having anything to compare it to, the issues mentioned in some of the reviews do not bother me.

As much as I love Dawn and Day, I already own the Ultimate Dawn set and the 2-disc Divimax Day set, so I'm going to pass for now since the Dawn BD is only the theatrical release (correct?). I prefer the extended cut and will probably wait until there's a BD release of the Ultimate set so I can have all 3 cuts of the film in HD.

Not surprised. Their BD section has been named "Blu-ray DVD" for ages.

I'm pretty sure they're referring to their upscaling DVD players... But yah, I can see where it's confusing.

Well yeah, Marantz does make some high-end stuff.

However, two issues ...

1) That MSRP. Expect the street price to obviously be quite a bit less.

2) More than 10x what you paid? Please tell me where you scored a BD player for less than $200?

indeed, the fuckers could have done this in the first place!

Considering several of those movies weren't out when they started the last deal ... please explain how that's possible?

I don't have a BD player.. That's why I was able to get it for less than $200. :D

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I got excited to see PoTC and Prestige on the free movie list, but then when I went to the pdf printout, I noticed they're on the same tier, so you only get one or the other. Heck, I'd even get the third movie on that third tier, Wild Hogs, before I picked up any of the other titles in the other tier, so that means there's only one movie I'd get in that deal that I'd care to watch. :(

Thing is , both of them were on the Amazon free movie list, so it sucks that the Amazon offer expired yesterday. I'm sure there will be a better Amazon bundle this year, once the holidays start getting closer.

But if you really have to choose just get the Prestige. :D

(BTW prestige is out in Europe on HD DVD if you really want it)

I'd choose Curse of the Black Pearl since it's more of the type of movie you can pop in when you have guests over (plus I enjoyed it). I heard about the Prestige on HD DVD, and its one of the two movies I'd consider importing along with Apocalypto.

The img is missing Nov & Dec. Check the PDF here for the whole shebang.

December doesn't look any better.

Transformers would be the only HDDVD release I would be interested. Not enough to get a player for. :/

Though for me, Ratatouille, Pixar collection, Spiderman Tril and Pirates 3 are mine.

I foresee ownage of epic proportions come October 30th and beyond for the short term.
