Pan's Labyrinth Blu-ray Announced

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=561

Lots of movies coming out on the 26th.

Another one:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/New_Line/Disc_Annoucements/New_Line_Brings_Pans_Labyrinth_to_Blu-ray,_HD_DVD/1039

In the studio's first dual-format day-and-date high-def release, New Line will bring the Oscar-winning 'Pan's Labyrinth' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this December.

Ever since New Line finally announced it was jumping into high-def with last month's announcement of 'Hairspray,' 'Pan's Labyrinth' has been one of the most highly-anticipated catalog titles for next-gen release in the studio's library. Now the wait is over, and both HD DVD and Blu-ray fans will be able to feast on Guillermo Del Toro's highly-acclaimed, multiple Oscar-winning fairy tale when it streets December 26.

New Line will be pulling out all the stops for 'Labyrinth,' which will come loaded with bonus features. Among the extras is a video prologue and audio commentary by Del Toro, two featurettes, an interactive "Director's Notebook," extensive storyboard and still galleries, an excerpt from the "Charlie Rose Show" with Del Toro, and a Marketing Campaign gallery with trailers and other ad materials.

Exclusive to the high-def versions will be an enhanced picture-in-picture video commentary with cast & crew interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, while the HD DVD will also enjoy web-enabled content (to be announced at a future date).

Tech specs are equally impressive, with 1080p video (codec TBA) and a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio track in 7.1 Surround -- so far the studio's first high-def title to be confirmed with high-resolution audio.

Retail for both next-gen editions is $35.99.

MINE. MINE.

Features wise it seems to be way better than the german release. If it is codefree (which I guess it will be not considering previous comments by New Line) I might double dip.

I havent a clue, but i would guess yes since they put Sopranos on HDDVD/Blu-ray.

Just checked on Amazon, part one of a season of Sopranos is just under $90? :lol

Maybe I'll just buy Deadwood on DVD instead.

Has there ever been an HD DVD title with DTS HD?

The only ones I've watched are the two French Terminator 2 discs if you mean DTS HD Master Audio lossless. But seriously, what the fuck?
Yeah, let's put our audio in a format that none of the players can decode. Why does anybody even take DTS seriously anymore? They're like 3DRealms at this point.

Further proof that the Hairspray and Rush Hour 3 delays really WERE for region coding reasons and not some hidden favoritism for BR. This movie has been out on the foreign markets and New Line drops it the same day as the BR.

Awesome because it means the catalog titles like LOTR that have already been distributed worldwide should see no delay either. :D

But, if it's a catalog title that New Line has worldwide distribution rights to, it will be delayed on HD-DVD. New Line doesn't have worldwide distribution rights to Pan's Labyrinth, which is why it's on both formats right away.

At least, that's what New Line has said in the past about their releasing plans.

ONLY if that title hasn't already been made available in all markets. That would apply to their new releases. Their catalog releases shouldn't be a problem.

New Line has worldwide distribution rights to LOTR, right? That means it's not available in all markets, and that it would more than likely get delayed for HD-DVD unless they got region coding to make them happy.

VanMardigan said:
How is it not already available???

I'm confused.

Is LOTR on HD-DVD/Blu-ray outside North America? No, it's not. So, unless New Line decides to release them in every region/country at the same time as North America, it will be delayed.

Maybe I didn't understand New Line's original press release, but I understood it as that the titles will be delayed if they hold worldwide rights to the title, regardless of whether it's available on regular DVD already.

I'm totally not trying to pick a fight, I just want to get New Line's releasing structure clarified.

No, Newline was referring to a release not out in theatres overseas. Like how HD DVD fans could import MrBeans Holiday on HD DVD even though it had not released in theatres domestically.

Hairspray was delayed in the U.S. on HD DVD because it was stil playing in theatres overseas. With no region lockout it could kill ticket sales.

That's where I think we've interpreted their strategy different. Neither Rush Hour 3 nor Hairspray were available worldwide (dvd or otherwise) so we really can't decipher their catalog strategy from those titles.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. For some reason, I thought they delayed the US HD-DVD releases to prevent Europeans from importing copies from the US. And, since New Line does not hold the rights to Pan's Labyrinth outside the US, I figured this helped support my interpretation of things.

Robert at Value Electronics (an AVS regular) has already been shipping the A35 units. The A3s are due by the end of the month I believe.

The A35 comes with 2 movies in the box (300 and Bourne Identity), Robert throws in the HD DVD Digital Video Essentials calibration disc for free, another 2 HDScape movies of your choice, plus you get to pick from the new lineup of Toshiba 5 free movie deal.

Shit ... just started researching at AVS regarding the gen 3 models. Fuck you Toshiba ... Fuck you.

No Reon ... no DTS beyond core ... all units have gimped 1080p60 output (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=918262) ...

I think I just going to have to wait for a good Universal ... since it seems like all stand-alones are sourced from Toshiba?

Maybe someone will make a non-gimped version.

That ... or hopefully the XA2 will get true 23.976Hz DVD output. I get the feeling Toshiba isn't going to update the firmware for it anymore though :( Then again, its got enough other issues, that probably can't be fixed with firmware >_<

I've got a couple with DTS-HD (Terminator 2 and Band of Brothers). The only one I know of with DTS-HD MA is Brotherhood of the Wolf.

On the subject of Pan's Labyrinth being day and date, it's already out on HD DVD in France and is getting a dual format release in the UK (via Optimum) on 16th November, amongst other territories. Because of that they probably don't have any conflicts surrounding worldwide licensing.

Those drive prices are getting seriously affordable. I'd be tempted to get a dual reader if I had a HTPC.

Robert at AVS mentioned another firmware update for the XA2. It really does seem like you're expecting too much from the low priced players. Why are you worried about dvd upscaling if your Ps3 can do that? Or if it can't do it as well, why was that not a stumbling block for you when you bought it, but it is one now? For someone with your tastes, it seems like the XA2 is the way to go. But Toshiba can't win with you. If they had announced an XA3 at $599-$699, you wouldn't buy it cause it was too expensive, but the models that you would buy are missing the high end features you want.

It seems like the conundrum Sony is facing on the gaming side. If they cut features to bring the price down, folks will get mad, but at the current price point, people (including me) are whining about the price.

Then again, I'm not sure why you assume that most of those issues can't be patched. You seem to have faith that the Ps3 will be patched to cover all the new BR specs, and Toshiba has been VERY good about firmware updates, including on gen 1 players.

Knocked Up made Universal $148 Million dollars and fits the young, discretionary income spending HD people perfectly. It's no surprise that it was the #1 title this week.

Anyways, pretty good week for HDDVD.

Well Superbad comes out in Dec. :p

With numbers like these I think HD DVD has a sure win for the week of Transformers.

It's an automatic hole in one when that comes out and will be the same with Shrek 3. I'll be dissapointed if HDDVD doesn't take a week with either one of them.

What's Superbad's BO sales compared to Knocked Up? I was under the impression that Knocked Up did much better and had a lot more word of mouth.

PS. Nooooooo for non-selectable numbers. Give me a second to type up the numbers.

From IMDB, Superbad made $116,181,146 as of September 23rd.

Knocked Up did $148 million as mentioned earlier.

Wow, Knocked Up sure did sell really well.

Great week numbers too, the last time HD DVD had a similar week was back in April/May.
