I never "got" 2001. Then again, I watched it about a decade ago and was perhaps too young to appreciate it. I think I'll put it on my netflix queue and see if the movie makes sense to me now or if it will permanently remain on my crap list.

Even if you don'e "get" it, watch it to be amazed at the visuals in HD.

There's plenty of other nice looking films to stare at AND be entertained. I certainly won't sit through a movie I don't like just to view visuals. Still, I want to give this film another chance. I just gave the HDD review a read, and the way the movie is described, I'm pretty sure I'll be pissed at the ending again and probably feel like I wasted time on the other aspects. I remember liking the intro, but hating the spaceship stuff with HAL. It's on my queue, so we'll see. It'll be a long time before it finds its way to the top, in any case.

As much as I like to rankle you about your HD format choice, and even though I know you're probably not reading this; your sentiments on 2001 I can share.

Don't get it. Don't need to or even want to 'get' it. Time can be spent more productively raising the bile of opposing camp members, or watching other newer, better looking and more entertaining films.

That's not how I mean, but since the industry has complained so loudly about consumer response to HD technology, it's good that this shopping season can be the one when HD dreams become reality for more people.

I'm not trying to sell anybody on the movie-- just that it's pretty danged impressive visually. Skip to the end if you must.

I haven't watched it through yet, but when I watched the ending graphics sequence, I was impressed more than I have even been by it. In part becuase this is the first time I'm seen it in HD (I may have seen a film screening sometime, but I don't recall, and certainly not a clean print).

Man wtf, let blu-ray win and get it over with. Its the superior format anyway.

Not after 51Gb backward compatible HD-DVDs were approved recently. I rather want HD-DVD to win; I'm invested in it. It would be rather funny to see how Sony coped with another obsolete format, only this time being tied to their gaming system.

Is it really that visually impressive though?

Isn't it just the movie equivalent of a pattern test?

i.e. lots of whites, lots of blacks, lots of straight lines at various angles?

This is pretty tempting... but I think when I decide to buy an HD-DVD player sometime this year I may have to stick with getting the Xbox 360 add on, because I have seen those on ebay for as low as $100 which is a damn good deal.

No. There all all sorts of effects and color.

I recall thinking it was "neat" in an interesting way before-- watching it in HD on a wall projector was a lot cooler than "neat."

But if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

One cool thing is that it's a release any HD owner can enjoy, regardless of format.

Just seeing the sunrise (sunset?) scenes in the 'dawn of man' intro while flipping around was jaw-dropping. I haven't had a *wow* moment like that with any other discs, to be honest. VanMardigan - I know you're into the DLP color pop. Get this into your netflix queue!

Yes, that was cool too! My wife says "we ought to watch more of Planet Earth!"

Yea, the decline in prices is great. I know HDTVs aren't nearly as expensive as they were a couple of years, so, if you are looking to upgrade your set, you might as well look, while you are in there(Walmart).

meh, still sitting this thing out for a while. No next gen format for me until the dust settles on this or I coincidentally get blu-ray because I happen to buy a PS3 for games.

Just but a new oppo DVD player because my old dvd player ate shit and now the PS2 is starting to act up and freeze during movie playback.

First tragedy, then farce.
all the new kubriks should be coming my way soon. come on amazon :(

I didnt get the redone full metal jacket though. I may if its that big of an improvement.

Kubrick is very love/hate for me, btu with all the HD releases I've been thinking about going on a rental campaign and re-watching them (and catching the ones I've never seen). I didn't care for Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket or Eyes Wide Shut, but have only seen each of them once.

I'm just teasin' man. :) But at least you're not blowing up at me like everyone else tonight; I've personally never sat down to watch the full thing... but it's not really my cup of tea from what I've seen... its visuals are slow and plodding... it's also a very silent film from what I recall.

I do recognize that it's spawned a lot of great scenes and shots though that have been reused by other directors as imitation or homage. But... it's just beyond my time.

But you know what; you've sold me anyway.... in so far as, if I ever see it in HD at a video rental store, I'll pick it up and give it a watch!

Stop trying to turn film discussion into the OT equivalent of the Gaming Forum

Let's be real here - this thread has NEVER been about "film discussion," and has almost always been about both sides arguing with each other. So just because it's been a bit quiet in here the past couple of days, don't pretend like that's the norm.

So the BDA pulled out all the stops and gave away half their Disney movies for free, and still only won the week by 2%.

For a "dead" format, HD DVD seems pretty alive and competitive to me.

Blu-ray may have scored a PR victory and they get to keep their "winning" sales record intact--technically. But in reality, this is a win for HD DVD, and the studios, who look at these things not merely by percentage of market share, but by profit, know it.

Dude, seriously, worst spin ever. This was supposed to be HDDVD's only good week in months and HDDVD group did everything to ensure as many sales as possible. They spent 150 million for the Transformers exclusivity they had that Heroes deal etc etc and they still didn't manage to win. If they can't beat BR this week they never will. You talk about Crayon being in your ignore list but you try much harder than him.

It doesn't matter considering both media cost an arm and a leg and most people haven't adopted yet. I'm waiting for the cheaper, third medium to come out in a few years when HD has become more viable with the mainstream.

Why is that? Aside from more storage capacity, how is it superior? Not trolling in anyway, I'm just curios as to why you say this. And for the record, the storage capacity issue is kind of back and fourth as well as the multi-layered versions of both format continue to increase the storage.

Higher storage capacity, higher overall bandwidth (meaning higher possible bitrate), larger (as of now) studio support. Of course, as of now, HD-DVD is cheaper to produce, and has a better system for special features and extras (Blu-ray will be on equal footing in that regard if they get their damn act together.)

This really isn't the thread to argue this topic, though, as there's already a perfect good HD-DVD/Blu-ray argument thread where every single possible argument in the world has already been utterly beaten to death.

I can see how the BDA will whore out their 2% win for the week. It's great PR. A couple of articles are already running the story as if Transformers "didn't sell" enough to win the week, yet ignoring completely the fact that BD had a huge buy one get one free promotion for basically all the Disney titles.

J6P will only see the 51>49 and declare the death of HD DVD, well like most people here anyways.

Where were your complaints about Paramounts false PR claim of 190k "smashing all previous records." Turns out it didnt even beat the blu-ray version of 300.

You have such disdain in your post, why do you care? I thought we all wanted one format future, just as long as its your format right?

It is the death of HDDVD. If they can't beat BR now they never will, especially after PS3's huge price drops. Tell me, which week will HDDVD catch a break like that again this year?

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Guys just reporting I got my HD-DVD drive (360 one) working on Vista and with PowerDVD and loving it, now need Transformers :D

That sucks, blu-ray has a special coating to combat that, might want to check into the format. ;)

Dunno, but if BDA continues to provide 2 for 1 deals until they've run out of 150 million bucks... it'll be a fair many moons before HD-DVD fans crawl out of their holes again. :p
