I'm beginning to remember why I've mostly avoided this thread.

Come on, fight the good fight! There are people jjasper and myself and presumably you who dont want to talk about nothing but sales bullshit. The more of us that can steer clear of that and just focus on HD media itself, the better.

Anyways, my current thing that is pissing me off is that we HD DVD/BRD owners cant buy Blade Runner: The Final Cut on its own. I dont want to be forced to buy 5 versions of the movie when I only want one :(

Score!

Went into Wal-mart before work today 6:30am and yep they were selling the HD-A2 for $98. I picked up two one for my dad's Christmas gift and one for myself. I remembered to get two reciepts for the 5 free movie deal. That was sweet guys two HD DVD players for $210. Ohh one note after the lady rang up both players she was told my another shift manager that it was one per customer! Then another gentleman came back and said no limit so, you may have trouble with that if you want two. Anyway good luck guys thank you Walmart in Ga. for being good to me! :D Another gentleman was right behind me and said are you getting that HD player for the $98? I said yes I am! He said I'm going to watch if your's works I'm buying one too. The word is getting out!

I just sent my GF on a search and destroy mission for two players at walmart, hopefully she can snag one as it seems not many people know about these sales.

Toshiba is taking a loss on these units, and a considerable one at that. As for a discrepancy between the hardware units; there really isn't one in terms of cost as far as I know. The DSPs required for both are the same since they basically need to be able to process 1080p video. I also don't think blu-ray diodes are much more expensive than the ones in HD-DVD players.

This is the kind of "opinion as fact" routine that pisses me off. And it seems to be your MO, from the few posts I've seen. It's a well established fact that HD DVD manufacturing is more economical than Blu Ray manufacturing. Google it, Yahoo Search it, MSN search it. Anything you have to do to stop posting your crap as facts. STOP PRETENDING TO KNOW HOW MUCH TOSHIBA LOSES ON THESE UNITS. YOU DON"T HAVE ANY PROOF. THIS IS NOT 9/11!!

Is it against your genetic code to either NOT ANSWER or say "I'm not sure" instead of posting opinion as fact?

:D I got up at 6am and headed to the ghetto Walmart. I got the electronics section at 6:45 when the guy rolled 30 out on a pallet. I asked if it was a line and he said no, but he couldn't ring it up until 8am. So he told me to take 1 off and I did. Walked around for over an hour. At 8, it rang up and I left for work. Picked up Clerks 2 (which was the only movie they had for cheap) and Transformers. When I left it was still 20 or so still on the pallet. There was a line for the laptop.

Damn you!!!! They're estimating that this is gonna move around 100K toshiba units today. That's pretty good if you ask me.

Overnight, Wal Mart will become the biggest retailer of High Definition standalones in the country. That confirms two things all the regulars in this thread hopefully knew:

1. Wal Mart is ridiculously colossal and therefore can be very influential at this step in the format war

2. This market is still very very tiny.

Thinking about this I may have to agree. This to me seems like a very big volley in the format wars. How many potential Blu ray player sales did walmart just kill with this sale? I'd say quite a lot. And of course that will translate to movie sales. If you ask me.....shit just got real!

It has nothing to do with sticking my head in teh sand. Im fucking tired of the aholes in this thread fucking it up. Im tired of the constant cycle of bullshit that gets posted everyday. Its nothing but ifs and hypotheticals. Notice how i havent been arguing with any of you? This thread is a microcosom of the AVS HD media area, which is why i dont even bother to read any area of AVS anymore.
I have nothing to stick my head in the sand over I couldnt care less anymore, maybe your just projecting what you feel you should do on to me?

Shame they dont have Wal-Marts in the city.. could have been a nice Christmas present for dad.

There's on on North/Grand or something like that, but I guess that's too far out for you?

You're as prone to it as anyone else in this thread.

Next time, quote me doing it so it doesn't come off like you're just randomly attacking me.

Three people walked out with a combine number of 17 HD A2. Total bullshit.

that is some bullshit right there, did you not get one because of it, cause if you dodn't I would stricly complain to the store manager. And he can give you a raincheck on it. It's against store policy, the ad stated one per customer.

yeah, I didn't get one. Oh well, but I just bought it online for even less! Love you bestbuy!:lol

I'm going to heat out on my lunch break to see if I can find one at Walmart. I'll probably snag Blood Diamond, Planet Earth, and Transformers while I'm at it too. You have to have something to watch after all. :)

I got to Wal-mart at 7:40AM and they were sold out (wtf? the sale was supposed to start at 8am bitches!). :( Good thing my fucking BOSS was at another as a fallback. He was second in line and was able to buy one for me. Of course I had to throw in a little bonus payment for his time, but I've got my player sitting in my cube now. :D

"Warner Lets Their Bluray License Expire?!

Reports are circulating that Warner Brothers' Bluray license expired last night, October 31st, and that they have not renewed it! This would be a very clear signal that they may not continue support of Bluray releases. No confirmation is yet forthcoming, but speculation is rife that an official decision may be forthcoming from Warner before the end of the year. It is said that Warner is very interested in seeing the sales of HD DVD players at their new price points starting at $198 at various retailers such as Circuit City, Walmart, Best Buy and many more. Tomorrow, Walmart also runs a half-day sale on Toshiba A2 players at an incredible $99!"

"Very clear" that they "may"? If is means they may, it's not clear at all.

Who writes this crap?

where is that from? This thread?

I doubt WB is going to the BRD event and two days later dumping the format.

They may not have renewed their license so that they can more easily manuver to HDDVD *if* they decide to go that route. Im sure if they pick BRD Sony will gladly let them back on the board.

My buddy was disappointed last night because we live in WI where Wal-Mart can't sell A2s for $98. But thanks to the guy above, I let him know that BB made more available on their web site this morning and he was able to score one for just over a hundred bucks! He's so excited.

Thanks!!!

Yeah, and I may have to go that route. I'm hoping I can still snag one but we'll see. I've got two Walmarts within a fairly short drive of where I work.

That was posted overnight (at least from my timezone) in this thread.

I was able to snag one at one of the WM's close to me. Got there around 7 and there were about 5 people in line. By 8am there were about 40 people in line and mostly there for the A2. Those things were going fast.

After getting my player I was walking around the electronics section I overhead a conversation between WM employees. They had sold a couple of Wii's then one employee said that thats the limit for the day on Wii's and not to sell anymore. Im wondering how many Wii's they actually have in stock. Just thought it was interesting.

Too bad none of my family has jumped on the HDTV bandwagon yet. That has awesome Xmas present written all over it. Heck, thats almost worth it just for the 5 free movies.. you are essentially buying the movies for 16 bucks a pop and getting a free player to boot :lol
