It's present in the very same comment I quoted from. Maybe you can provide me the exact searchstring that works in Google, Yahoo or MSN that confirms your declaration that it's a "well established fact" that HD-DVD manufacturing is more economical than BD manufacturing. I mean, we all know well enough that HD-DVD disc manufacturing is cheaper, but since you were responding to snah on the point of hardware cost, I assume you weren't trying to be that misleading when you said "HD-DVD manufacturing"...

to be fair that was less of an 'opinion as fact' routine and more of a 'common knowledge must be fact' routine. not saying that that isn't a logical fallacy too. cause it is.

I have another little story about my trip to WM. So this hispanic lady was just browsing around and noticed a line started to form. She decide to join the line. After about half an hour or so she finally asks me what the line was for. I explained that it was for a sale on a tv, hd-dvd player and a laptop. Briefly explained the hd-dvd player and she mentioned she had a plasma, informed her that the would do. After purchasng my player went on my way I bumped into her again and noticed she bought a player and a laptop. I guess u can call it the Walmart effect.

Whatever you read the article you got the point. This is why this thread is shit, you post something when your tired and or just woke up(not to mention im dyslexic) and make a mistake and it gets dissected like a frog in sophmore biology.
No offense to you plagiarize, im not trying to single you out or anything.

I bought one of the $99 A2 players at Wal-mart this morning. How does it compare to the 360 add-on in audio/video/etc? Better, or about the same? I already have the 360 player, but $99 was too good to walk away from. If there's no real difference, I can always sell the A2 to a friend or take it back unopened, so it's no loss on my part. If I keep the A2 I'll be selling the 360 add-on.

I stopped by Wal-Mart after my dentist appointment this morning around 10am and they still had several of the A2s available, but the electronics employee looked at me like I had two heads after asking about the $14.99 HD-DVDs they were supposed to have gotten. No movies to be found beyond the usual eight. I wasn't especially jazzed about any of the ones from the selection that was posted before, but I'd have happily picked up a few of them had they been available...

It is better.

Also if they keep selling the A2 for 99 after today are they going to drop the price of the strap on? It was already overpriced, now it is ridiculously overpriced.

The A2 has better video processing (black levels on 360 are wanky)... and has the ability to do the HD audio stuff that the 360 can't (if you have an HDMI capable reciever that can accept them).

What it cant do is 1080p (which the 360 can via HDMI or VGA).

I would say overall its a better player, especially if you have a 720p or 1080i TV.

Thoughts on the A3? Any significant benefits to this one over the A2?

If you're connecting your player via optical, the A2 can send the bitstream as a DTS 1.5mps track, whereas the A3 output is only limited to Dolby Digital 640kbps (it's a good thing if your receiver doesn't decode DTS).

Both have similar load time and exact PQ.

yeah, that thing should be 50 bucks at this point on sale and 99 bucks normal. They would also sell a ton of them at those prices.

maybe i could have been a bit better in how i worded that, but i know that a lot of people on gaf don't read linked articles... and what you said could easily have been taken to mean k-mart were blu-ray exclusive. that is what i was trying to nip in the bud with that post.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that Eastern Promises will be available to own in high-definition exclusively on HD DVD/DVD Combo disc, come December 26, at $39.98 SRP each.

Eastern Promises (2007)
HD DVD/DVD Combo Disc / $39.98 SRP / December 26

Main Feature Presentation on the HD DVD side...

* 1080p High-Definition Widescreen 1.85:1
* Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English)
Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English & French)
* English [SDH] & French subtitle options

Bonus material present on both HD DVD & DVD sides:

* Secrets and Stories
* Marked for Life

Heard nothing but great things about that movie (I love David Cronenberg's work). Didn't have time to catch it in theaters.

*Adds to wishlist*

Eastern Promises is one of my favorite movies of the year. Like Departed, it's one of the very-best takes on its genre (so much so that it doesn't feel like a genre movie a lot of the time).

Boo for Combo Format Only.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
My sister called her Wal Mart (York, PA) and was told it was sold out by 8:30. She says there are other Wal Marts in the area, but I don't want her to go on a wild goose chase.

I'll try Best Buy online. I already ordered Evan Almighty for $20 shipped with their disc sale.

On Best Buy.com:

For 199.99 (HD-A3 on sale), you get The Bourne Identity and 300 pack-in + 2 other HD DVD movies of your choice (excluding box sets) + the 5 free mail-in rebate.

That's also a really sweet deal.

Edit: Posted already, but didn't see the 2 additional movies being mentioned.

According to avsforum, Best Buy's business site is sold out. Their site has been down for a little while now.

Yep, it's OOS now. Hopefully their previous 'In Stock' status was accurate for as long as it was available. I know Circuit City has great stock tracking online; not sure about BB. In any case, glad I was able to help some people here!

EDIT: Here's an update on the Best Buy Business orders from Fatwallet:

Here is the info I got:

- Major chaos at BBFB.com this morning
- They HAD inventory to start this morning, but doesn't know how many
- Had AT LEAST 500 orders this morning
- Inventory specialists will be in touch via email later today
- They work with other vendors to get product, but in this case they were clearing out THEIR inventory, so other vendors aren't going to sell them to them for this cheap since it was a bestbuy clearance and not anyone else's.

Good luck to the early purchasers!

My guess is that if you only ordered one, your order is likely to be delivered.

EDIT2: Reportedly some people's orders are shipping already.

i think the 5disc set is pretty cheap man

the stupid briefcase is more expensive, but for the regular 5 disc set for hd dvd/bluray is only $27.95

Are you serious? I dont even care about 3 of the versions, but if they really are selling all 5 for that price, then I retract my previous bitching. At that price point, its like only paying for one movie anyways.

Van: the A3, no question.

Ok, now I'm torn. :(

Do I pick up the A2 at $99 w/ 5 free movies

or the A3 @199 w/ 9 free movies??

Any thoughts?

Both are good deals. Remember, you can get two 35 dollar movies... and thats how much 300 costs, so you're probably getting more bang for your buck with the A3.

Got to Walmart at 7:25am, there were 20 people in front, ultimately 30 people behind me, and 80% were there for the A2... too bad there were only 14 units!! Doh...

The guy in front of me already had BD, but couldn't pass up on this deal. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to go dual format.

I should have ordered from Best Buy this morning before leaving for Walmart. They had a few Wii's though.

Hopefully a good portion of these people will still be in the market for the coming weeks and months, because it sure brought out more people (50+) than I thought it would.

I had the same reaction as you. Initial outrage then I was kinda happy about it once I found out the price.

well 4 movies is about a $100 value, so its like flipping a coin imo

i guess it matters if you like the free movie offers

I cant WAIT to see The Final Cut in HD. People are raving about how immaculate the film print is at these showings in NYC and other places. I wish I could have seen it in theatres, but this will do nicely as well.

The price on Blade Runner makes it a tempting impulse buy. I don't even like the movie, but curiosity about the final cut makes me want to try it again.

Van, I'd get the A3, but then again, I've never been the preacher of low player prices. When you figure what you'll spend on movies in just a year or two, the player price is very inconsequential. For $100 more, you get a better player *and* more movies. Hard to beat that.

I thought the A3 was just a less bulky A2?

Less bulky = better. I would assume better build quality too, if only because the manufacturing is improving as they go. Assumption, but a fair one.

Plus more movies.

Okay, sure, just making sure I wasn't missing a potentially critical feature upgrade.

Don;t take my word for it, I haven't really read up on it. Not being interested in dual formattedness, I haven't read much about the players. I know they're both 1080i, which is the biggest difference among HD-DVD players as far as I can tell.

VanMardigan

Nobody knows what it really means, but they reaffirmed their dual stance for the rest of the year, and haven't cancelled anything.

Nobody is even sure what "license" means in this context.

I have no idea what their action means, but "license" refers to the membership fee that every BDA company has to pay, iirc. Something like 30 or 40k (chump change, really)

I'll see if I can dig that up where I read it, so let me verify before we run with that.

I got the literal meaning, but does that mean that they just won't have a seat on the board, or can't make BDs, or something else?

That's what I was referring to.

Well, I think it refers to making BD's. But the question is, why would they let it lapse? It wasn't' an oversight, since even AVS knew about the expiration date. Maybe it doesn't matter, maybe it does. We'll see.
