I would ask if you want to bet...but we remember how that went.

haha damage control on your part. let it go. a huge majority of the blu ray players being sold are likely ps3's which aren't primarily used for that purpose. Hd-dvd players are selling for $100 now (and they're sold out at most places!!!). Now these people who have their new hd-dvd players have to buy some movies. Movie sales for November will be verrrry interesting. Not really. Hd-dvd will sell more movies. w00t

let's wait and see for the results. honestly, i've heard it all before, and it hasn't stopped the growing disparity in sales.

Fuck yes (this was from my bestbuy.com order through the google cache):

Dear Valued Best Buy Customer,
You are receiving this email because you recently ordered a Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A2) from www.bestbuy.com and your order was placed in a backorder status while we awaited additional inventory. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players. There is no need for you to do anything to receive this upgraded model. We will simply fulfill your original order and your packing slip will be updated to show you received the HD-A3 and serve as your order receipt.

If you are not interested in receiving the Toshiba HD-A3 as a replacement for the discontinued HD-A2, you may return the unopened item to your nearest Best Buy store or simply contact one of our Customer Service Representatives at (888)-BestBuy for more information about how to return the product for a complete refund.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience. We look forward to your next visit to Best Buy.

Sincerely,

Since you can not take the hint, I will try and explain.
The 100 hd players are gone, never coming back discontinued.

Do we really know how long they'll last?

I haven't seen anyone's warehouse or inventory sheet, so I couldn't say.

Well aren't newer models going for a buck fifty? What's the cheapest blu ray player again?

You could be right, stores could be sitting on some stock for Black Friday also which would make sense.
I have no doubt about then selling out as soon as they touch the shelves though.

From what stores are saying the A2 is discontinued.
This is a clearance move no matter what people want to call it.
BUT the A3 will be moving to a $199 price point which is a good deal all around.

Well, it is discontinued, but that doesn't really tell us how many units are out there. BB is obviously out, along with most other stores.

It would be kind of a coup for Wal-Mart though if they had a million of these things sitting around and were to offer them for $99 the rest of the holiday season when everyone else is out. BB won't sell many A3s for $200 if Wal-Mart is flooding the market with A2s for $100.

Kind of far fetched I know - I'm sure Toshiba would be pissing off a lot of people by doing something like that, lol. It doesn't really make sense to me to have these sales now though if it means they don't have any inventory left for Black Friday. Unless they are going to do $100 A3s for Black Friday, it will seem like kind of a let down.

Yeah, I think the A3 will move into the 199 slot in a matter of days though to be honest.

I agree - in googling my new prize, someone from AVS disassembled an A3 and estimated they'd be HIGHLY profitable at $299 based on the components.

Makes you wonder what's up their sleeve, eh?

One thing's sure, this has been planned for a long time. Something tells me there are more surprises in store for us these next two months.

Cripes, Toshiba's saved all the fireworks for the finale! :lol

i haven't been keeping up on blu-ray and hd-dvd sales. is it still 2:1 like it was six months ago?

Yeah, I actually remember not that long ago some people were saying that the A2 actually cost more for them to make than the A3.
I can not remember if it was here or on another forum but it can be a great double move on Toshiba's part.

Close enough. But Transformers made it almost 1:1 for the week. Blu-Ray still edged out.

Lol, they WILL be back. The question is "when?", not "if".

I'll say $99 HD DVD players will be available (permanently) by April-June of next year.

If Warner switches to blu you may seem them go cheaper than that. :D

I agree with you, but you know that is not the context that was being talked about.

Have links to the Paramount/Shrek/HD DVD commercials been posted yet?

That's some nice advertising.

Has there been any real advertising for Blu-ray the format? Not as in "available tomorrow on DVD and Blu-ray", but actually introducing the format to people and talking about its benefits? Being honest, I don't watch a lot of TV, but I've never seen one, while I did see the "Cookie" ad above.

I know Disney has been doing that mall tour thing, but the Blu-ray group really should be beating the idea of Blu-ray into people's heads.

HD Net has a ton of them that play regularly, as well as I have seen them on fox and other stations lately along with the new Cars ads

The PS3 commercials are freakin' slick and they advertise blu-ray.

Just saw an extensive Disney Blu-ray commercial on HGTV HD. They are definitely pushing the format as hard as Sony.

No, you've sounded pretty much against the format for as long as I can remember.

then you have a short memory.

I'm not against HDDVD. I'm against two formats. Its just retarded for home media.

I had the HDDVD add on for my 360 as soon as it launched. I then sold it as my 360 was so noisy and bought a Toshiba E1. Lovely and quiet.

I then bought a PS3 and decided that I had too many boxes and I didn't want to invest in two formats of software, so went with bluray as I already had it in the PS3, it was an excellent player and it meant I saved a box under the TV. Plus I honestly thought (and still do) that it has the most support from the CE side and therefore had the best chance of succeeding Vs the pretty much singularly supported HDDVD.

In the beginning honestly there was good reason to be.
Blu movies had some shitty transfers and encodes, poor choices all around and the HD of the same movies looked better.
Price is also a motivating factor which is understandable.

fair enough.

Alot of it also is Sony hate, many many on here and on the AVD and Highdef forums will all readily admit it.

this is where it breaks down for me - all the emotional baggage. Toshiba aren't the 'good guy' fighting the good fight against the evile Sony. But Toshiba are a large faceless corporation just like Sony.

and Sony are only one member of the BDA. Its been discussed that Panasonic is actually a very strong IPR owner in Bluray, yet its Sony that gets all the bile.

I don't get it.

I hate the format war because its splintering the media. I'd prefer one colour of packaging. I happen to have a bluray player so I would prefer bluray to be that format. I also think thats the more logical choice and I've given reasons for that before.

But the idea that people are making similar choices to me but based on who is 'good' and who is 'bad' is just sad frankly.

I prefer HD-DVD because they provided the first cheap-ish entry into HD media for me, as a 360 owner with no plans to purchase a PS3. No hatred of Sony - just based on price. That said, I'll happily go dual format once I can get a BRD player for $200 or so, assuming Disney is still exclusive at that point.

As a gamer, why don't you want a PS3?
