As a gamer, why don't you want a PS3?

Snah, you continue to be in the wrong forum for this bullshit. I've had a 360 since its launch, and there's only so much free time to go around. There are too many 360 games for me to get to, and no PS3 games available or planned that I just *have* to have, expecially considering I also own a Wii and DS, with a backlog of games.

Will drop pants for Sony.
Finally bought Spider-man blu-ray Trilogy

DSC01278.jpg

I haven't seen spider-man 3 until now and I must say, it was an ok movie. Oh and I finally saw spider-man 2.1, the extra fight scenes were cool. I do miss the pizza shop owner screaming "noooow" in the original than in 2.1.

Does anyone know if spirited away or any Miyazaki film will be on blu-ray?

Oh and what is HD-DVD's strategy for Japan? Isn't Blu-ray king over there?

Don't take a question addressed to you as if I'm personally attacking you. It was an honest, genuine question.

Jesus. People on this board are so sensitive over the most trivial shit.

Studio Ghibli films are released through Buena Vista Japan, which is is Disney, which is Blu-ray. Ghibli has released Iblard Jikan, a visual image film on Blu-ray in Japan, actually. No word on any other Ghibli titles coming to Blu-ray, though.

I have no idea what their plan is, but it's pretty much a non-factor in Japan. Not saying that Blu-ray has much presence, either, but it's a lot larger than HD-DVD over there.

No, Snah, you are the most transparent and silly sony-partisan on the entire interwebs. It was just annoying that you chose to bring the console discussion so directly into this thread.

Japan / Asia is pointless movie format wise. Hell, VCDs ruled asia while the rest of the world was using VHS.

If it weren't for Asia, we wouldn't have Infernal Affairs on Blu-ray. For that alone, they're not pointless. Plus, we've got Gundam movies coming from Japan in February.

Yeah, I'm a "silly sony partisan" yet I enjoy all of my gaming systems. Are you a "silly HD-DVD" partisan?

I asked you a question, you got offended. I'm sorry you're so sensitive and had to resort to personal attacks.

BTW, does anyone know where to get the best deal on the Die Hard Series? Are they even up for pre order yet?

looks like the collection is ~80 bucks at amazon.com

Is that any good? I heard it was boring. That Appleseed remake was punishingly boring. Are anime directors trying to out spend and by virtue of production values out bore the audience now?

Are Korean directors trying to out ugly each other? Old Boy made me hate ever one of the characters and wish for the film to be over.

this is where it breaks down for me - all the emotional baggage. Toshiba aren't the 'good guy' fighting the good fight against the evile Sony. But Toshiba are a large faceless corporation just like Sony.

and Sony are only one member of the BDA. Its been discussed that Panasonic is actually a very strong IPR owner in Bluray, yet its Sony that gets all the bile.

I don't get it.

I hate the format war because its splintering the media. I'd prefer one colour of packaging. I happen to have a bluray player so I would prefer bluray to be that format. I also think thats the more logical choice and I've given reasons for that before.

But the idea that people are making similar choices to me but based on who is 'good' and who is 'bad' is just sad frankly.

Very much correct. In fact, most of the BDA players are ex-DVD forum members who wanted to create their own next-generation format. I think this was due to some animosity towards Toshiba during the creation of the DVD format and most of the regulatory patents going to them?

edit: Oh, and can't disregard the CE companies either. Blu-Ray has massive CE support compared to HD-DVD. Then again, playing HD content on a PC is a whole other ballgame.

In a statement released late Thursday, Kmart VP Jonathan Magasanik said the following:

There have been numerous statements in the media today, attributed to Toshiba, indicating exclusive support for the HD DVD format in Kmart stores. These statements are false. Kmart intends to support both the HD DVD and Blu-ray platforms, and has no plans to support either platform exclusively.

:lol This format war is quite Hi-Larious!

I would love to see that and/or the original movie on Blu-ray. When I first say Ghost in the Shell on dvd, i was shocked how awesome it looked, but it would be pure awesome in hi-def.

Hopefully Macross Zero and Macross Plus make it on blu-ray. Sony or someone needs to start putting anime films on blu-ray.

Oh and has anyone been spoiled with Hi-def to the point that you actually refuse to buy DVD. I have, I was in Strawberries in Government Center in Boston and I could not bring myself to look at any of the DVDs expect the blu-ray section, either looking for a good deal on a movie i want or something interesting. If it wasn't for the Yuffie Kusaragi action figure, I would have bought the twilight zone movie on blu-ray. Is that a good transfer on blu-ray?

Innocence looks breathtaking on Bluray, the first Ghost in the Shell looks great and sounds amazing.
Both are available as imports with english subs. (though a little pricey)

Methinks this'll be a very deciding season for the High Def DVD player wars. Just might be "over" by the end of it. Seems Toshiba is seriously going for the crown....and let's be honest: The way into the average persons hearts, minds & homes is through their wallets.

Where is the best place and cheapest to import Blu-ray titles from Japan?

RENT is on blu-ray there???? I want it NAO!

I know a lot of people will hate this, but I would love to see CASSHERN on blu-ray.

Innocence has been out for a while, you may be able to find it used.
Ghost in the Shell was more recent and came in a combo pack with a dvd.
I picked mine up at Play-Asia, though cd japan and other sites as well as amazon.jp are other options.

Well, after reading the last 4-5 pages since I was last here (disregard my previous post as a point of reference), I'm seeing a *lot* of Bitter Blu-Tears of Denial of all this great Toshiba HD-DVD sales and it's prognosis for the future of the HD-DVD format.

Does this mean it's a sign of things to come? Should I break out my hipwaders?

Take that bitter tears shit out of this forum.
I think while you are reading you need to go back further to all of the other "saviors" of HD-DVD and how things went and then just sit back and see what happens.

Got the HD-A3 with 9 free HD-DVD at BB for 199 so now I'm officially format netural, too tough to pass up such a deal. Looking forward to watching transformers.

lol, theyre back in the game with desperation price drops. A format thats losing will cut its profits and take more losses to try and get back into the game.

i will still only back blu-ray until there is a winner declared. I chose the format that had the superior specs.

Yes the A3 does.

As far as superior specs, that is a debate that would go in circles for hours.

No, only 720p/1080i, the A30 does 1080p and can run 1080p/24 although it still runs 399.99 I think and I've heard that the real-world difference between the two on 1080p sets isn't huge, although haven't seen it personally (I only have a 720p set currently so not really relevent for me).

Dammit, that's hot! I just got the trilogy set yesterday too! I really really didn't need to see this. Then again them Japanese folks must be paying an arm and a leg for such a set, home video prices are ridiculous over there for like one movie at nearly $50 at times let alone three.

The list price is at 12,800 yen, but Amazon currently has it on sale for 9,472 yen.

BD J-pop is brutal. The DVD's are just now approaching reasonable prices, but that just means that BD's took over the old price point.

hot damn it's good to be back on gaf.

in any case, my girlfriend just bought us the spider man trilogy on blu-ray. i'll probably start it tomorrow night as i have to work pretty early tomorrow (5AM).

Get that shit out of this thread, seriously. Toshiba is having a firesale and is dumping most of their A2 units, which is actually illegal in some states.

There are two obvious reasons why Toshiba is doing this, a) mainly to clear out units for the A3 since the A2 stock won't be replenished and b) out of desperation for the holiday season.

^Yep. This is not the momentum shifter some HD-DVD fans think this is, rather, it is the last desperate attempt by Toshiba to save their fading format.

I read a quote yesterday, from an interview specifically to ask Kmart to clarify its position, and the answer was, Kmart is not carrying Blu-ray hardware. Only HD DVD hardware due to the affordability, which matches their audience.

So Kmart = HD DVD hardware and software, as well as Blu-ray software.

If hd-dvd doesn't win this week after the cheap players at wal-mart, hd-dvd is pretty much screwed....should be alot of software bought with those....

I'd settle for a nice showing, near 50/50. Spidey came out, remember, and Blu-ray has been enjoying a nice lead from the PS3 Effect all year long.

I believe it's enough for HD DVD to begin closing the gap here, because studios would prefer an install base built on standalone players rather than a game console.

edit: Not sure it's been mentioned, but I read at AVS that Wal-Mart's secret sale is being extended through the 4th. So anything they have stock on, you can still get for the sale price.

I picked up two movies, Casino and Sleepy Hollow, and may go back tomorrow for Lucky Number Slevin.

"how is the PQ on Oldboy?"
"haha walmart is clearing out their bluray exclusivity am confirmed why else would they have movies on sale for 14.95"
"Anyone picking up Chuck and Larry?"
"uh...they had hd movies on sale for 14.95 last week"
"that is different, bluray doomed am confirmed"
