There's a promo going around where you buy a Sony HDTV and you get a free PS3.

Not sure how much she's willing to spend, but if she does get one you can get a free PS3 out of it.

She's probably going to be in it (knowing her) for less than a grand for the TV. Me? I've capped what I want around 1,500 bucks (remember, this is a person who'll bitch about paying 1,000 for a TV, but think nothing about paying 1,200 for an AKC registered dog)

Decent deal. But a real bummer it's only a Disney deal.

The only movie I want on that list is Starship Troopers :p

Cinderella and Deja are two good movies IMO.. I got those together with Starship. :D

anything greater than 8-10 feet, probably not worth it.

I sit at around 6-8 feet, still looking at that chart, it really doesn't seem worth it for now.

That chart is such bullshit.

Also anyone that picked up the players, if you don't get Hot Fuzz, you are missing out.

Thanks. BD still managed to hold back the onslaught even though it didnt have any major releases, speaks volumes IMO.

Next week will be interesting.. Cars, Ratatouille + 399 PS3.

$400 PS3. So what? Hd-dvd players are much cheaper than that now. Ratatouille and Cars were the two weakest Pixar movies, and the proceeds at the box office show that. Don't think they will do much for blu ray.

HDDVD players have been much cheaper than BD players than forever and they've still yet regain their sales dominance ever since the PS3 joined the fray.

The performance of Cars and Ratatouille compared to previous Pixars offerings has nothing to do with the sales potential it has for the High def market. People will buy it up.

I think people will grab both of those movies, CG on HD have made good numbers in the past IIRC. Also, nothing shows of HD like awesome CG. :D

About the price, I know several people who got the cheaper PS3 just to use as a BD player here in Europe. So yeah, it will sell alot of movies I think, it also happens to be the best BD player out there.

Remember BD prior to PS3? Yeah, dont count out the cheaper PS3.

No, and yes they will sell well, they will be #1,#2 most likely next week for HD releases.

y'all should be ashamed
I'm still not sure whether or not to get Cars...seemed like a weak Pixar movie to me (despite me loving every single movie they've done so far)...any impressions on it?

I enjoyed Cars quite a bit, but it's not amongst the best of Pixar imho. For me, it dragged a bit in the middle but was pretty good at the beginning and end.

Also, I'f you've seen Doc Hollywood, you've seen Cars. ;)

I loved Ratatouille. Bearing in mind its still out in the cinema over here in the UK, its cheaper for me to buy it on bluray from the US than it is to take my kids to go and see it. I have a region A player so no worries on the region front (BTW Cars is apparantly region free but I doubt Ratatouille will be)

Cars wasn't as good, but I have all the Pixar movies and plan to get them all again in HD when available. Same with Studio Ghibli and eventually Disney classics.

speaking realative to the transfer, I saw some of it the other day on a 56" full 1080p set and it was just awesome. Very crisp and clear and you could see some great texture work. I'll definately be getting it, but then I'm biased since I've seen it about 100 times since release on DVD because it's my son's favorite movie. :)

Ratatouille was only the 8th most grossing film this year, yea no one is going to buy that. What an awful performance.

umm..wouldn't it have been smarter for you to just buy an hd dvd player from costco for $250, keep it for close to 3 months while renting hd dvds from netflix, then returning it?

I mean, if you're reason for getting the player was so you could rent certain hd dvds...might as well save the $99 and "rent" the hd dvd player for nearly 3 months.

Not a bad idea, but maybe I feel a bit uncomfortable about ripping Costco off. :)

I have no idea what their plan is, but it's pretty much a non-factor in Japan. Not saying that Blu-ray has much presence, either, but it's a lot larger than HD-DVD over there.

Neither format has taken a foothold over there, with HD DVD doing worse. As far as what they're doing about it:

Just been doing some reading this morning and I HAVE to get this off my chest.

The one thing that boggles me about this thread, and more significantly the forums of AVS, Hi-Def, etc. is that there's always this retarded Type No.1 categorization of a(n) HD-DVD ower/Blu-Ray owner. Like how every HD-DVD supporter is some Sony-hating cheapskate who can't stand to be in the presence of a video game. Meanwhile Blu-Ray owners are simply Sony-loving PS3 owners (which incidentally doesn't count as a BR statistic) who don't even like movies.

These often come up (and just retread in this thread a bit to see it happen multiple times) to justify a point of the week or to plainly serve someone's ad hominem arguments-all in order to make that person feel better about their choices. I realize not everyone wants to be, or has the finances to be nuetral (heck I don't) but tossing logic and common sense out the window is pretty rampant just for the sake of backing a week's sales numbers and bargains. Not everyone fits into the mold corporations and studios would have you believe and some of us just want to watch quality movies.

I guess I don't really have a point, I just wanted to vent after gauging a lot of bullshit hostility. I hope with all the cool, potentially hi-quality movies coming out this season, on both formats, people can just chill the hell out with their families and enjoy them.

Finding Nemo
TOTAL DOMESTIC GROSS $339,714,978

Cars
TOTAL DOMESTIC GROSS $244,082,982

Ratatouille
TOTAL DOMESTIC GROSS $205,292,872

See a trend here? People are losing interest in Pixar movies.

Is there a website out there that focuses on Japanese Anime Blu Ray Movies?

The simple fact is that supporters of either format will buy basically any big release when it comes out to their format of choice. I know I intend to grab rattatouille and cars but I don't have the cash to throw around like I did in the summer.

Also posting those box office reciepts is a slight bit misleading- cars had plenty of competition opened in the summer and saw numerous delays, it's arguably the weakest pixar film but for someone such as myself that collects them and DIDN'T buy the dvd release it's pretty much a sure thing. Rattatouille opened in possibly the biggest week for releases that there has ever been and faced stiff competition for pretty well it's entire release. Plus it's a movie about a french rat, regardless of how amazing it is I think the average american film goer is still atleast somewhat biased towards that country. It's also not so much that people are getting sick of pixar films, moreso it's that people are getting sick of CG cartoons in general, I mean there's 1 released every month now and only 1 or 2 a year are worth watching.

Just unboxed my A2 and...

It takes 30 minutes to update the firmware? From disc? Seriously, wtf, I thought the minute(s) that it took for the PS3 to update was retarded, this is pretty sloppy...I dunno how many normal people are going to be updating their players regularly, out of the box DHCP is off (!!!) so most people will have trouble getting the updates off the internet, and if an update is 30+ minutes (probably longer if the player has to d/l the firmware itself)...yikes.

This is why I love my add-on. The HD DVD updates take about as long as the game updates take on Xbox Live. Also, make sure you've set the time and date properly if you want to update via network.

I have a better stat for you. The top ten grossing films this year, there are 6 yet to be released. Ratatouille, Bourne, Shrek, Simpsons, Harry Potter, Pirates. Only two of those are HD DVD exclusive, three are blu-ray and one is neutral. Oh and the top grossing film was released this week.
Your on crack or a blind idiotic fanboi if you think Ratatoille wont be at the top. Personally i think its both in your case.

My Xbox 360 sounds like a dustbuster when it's idling at the dashboard...totally unacceptable for watching movies (it is louder than my projector with its fan set on high). Not only that I have an HDMI receiver so gimped audio is less than ideal...

500K sold yesterday? Hardly. I think the number of A2s Wal-Mart may have moved yesterday is closer to 40K, max.

FWIW, there was a guy at AVS who got the 40K number from a Toshiba rep, or so he said.

WallyWorld + other vendors, maybe close to 50K, who knows.

Not bad for one day, but there's still work to be done. Perhaps just as important as the sell-through, however, is the shot in the arm HD DVD has received in consumer awareness. Every holiday, there are a handful of "hot items" that everyone talks about, and Toshiba seems to be working to make its format one of those.

I agree with you and what's most painful of all is that we are all movie lovers. When DVD came out it was great, everyone loved it and there was piece on earth. Now we're at odds because big ass corporations can't get their shit together.

I wonder if/when they will fix the HD audio problem witht he 360. I mean HDMI is standard on all 360s now, and you don't need 1.3 for the HD audio formats... I suppose it's only a matter of time.

Anyway what advantages do the A3 series have over the A2?

Brew, you had a good run. PS3 + 10 games (2 on pre-order, you get those for free) + 26 movies up for grabs! 199.. hell, 98USD!
