I seriously wish you would stop with the whole "PS3 demographic" thing.
No offense but it is utter bullshit and opinion.
Mainly for two reasons which are A) Bluray is more than the PS3 and B) the movie tastes are just too varied.
There is no one demographic to either side and it is tiring to see people trying to trivialize it.
I know you are not meaning anything negative when you say it but it keeps coming up.

The "Ps3 demographic" is the 18-25 male. You shouldn't take offense. Of course there are variances, and of course there are a minority of standalone owners in the Blu Ray camp, but in the same way that the Ps3 has made software sales on Blu Ray almost double up HD DVD, its demographic determines what the big sellers are, for the most part.

Yes, there are exceptions, but stuff like PoTC, Casino Royale, Fantastic Four, Spiderman and 300 are more appealing to the current Ps3 demographic and are therefore more likely to do well in the software charts. The exceptions (standalone owners, girl gamers, casual gamers) do not invalidate the 18-25 male demographic that would be attracted to the PlayStation 3, especially at this stage in in its life.

And Blu Ray, at this nascent stage, IS primarily Ps3.

You have data to back this up? Because the widening losses at their gaming division seem to contradict that.

I'm talking about standalones (and referring to all BD CE companies, not just Sony).

Sorry, then. I believe you are correct in that no Blu Ray CE company is likely losing money on their standalones.

Also, stores have acknowledged they make higher margins on BD players as well.

BTW - To all those that decided to poop in my cereal when I stated the A2 was being closed out for the A3 to take its place ... I'm sending you my breakfast. :\

If anyone bought an A3 from Best Buy recently with the 9 free discs deal (5 mail, 2 in box, 2 of your choice at checkout), go back tomorrow and price match for ANOTHER movie. As of tomorrow it's 10 free (3 of your choice at checkout).

That's a nice deal. If I can't get a $100 player for my dad, I'll definitely look into that deal. All these deals, and it's not even Black Friday yet. (crickets from the BDA)... :lol

That is borderline embarrassing in my opinion.
I am sure the usuals will pop in and think that it is some great deal instead of reeking of desperation.

While promotions like these have always happened on both sides...holy crap, is this insane.

I would argue that the PS3 demo, Blu-ray demo and the HD DVD demo are mostly the same: Young adults (20-35) with significant discretionary income.

The free ones by mail is always a good promotion for both sides, the pack ins are also great.
The two free of your choice in and of itself baffled my mind but now a third ... I do not see how movie companies can be happy about it.
Most people will get the player for the free movies and then just dump the player off on Craigslist or return it to a different store and keep the three free ones.

and here I am with a dying DVD player. I suppose I could sell the A2...free movies are always a good thing.

Why not.
I can say that if I could find someone to take the 360 add on off of my hands I would hit the A3 just for the free movies.

Desperation? Perhaps. To me, it would be desperation if they were simply clearancing stock. However, in this case these deals are simultaneous to an unprecedented marketing campaign for the format, along with the paramount exclusivity. To me, it's more an aggressive shot at changing the market than desperation.

I'm watching Ratatouille right now, it's fucking awesome. I think it's better than Finding Nemo and as good as the Incredibles, but the Incredibles is a really different movie, can't really compare the two.

Ratatouille has some surprisingly strong dialogue imo, it makes me think about the message.

Their focus should be to sell movies, not to pad their install base with people that may or may not start buying movies on a significant basis.
(And yes this would apply for BD also.)

i think ratatouille will sell extremely well. it's different from the other blu-ray movies out there, and honestly some of the 'cg movies' appear to have more 'pop'. i've been waiting a while to pick up a quality cg film, but haven't yet because none of them interested me. i hear ratatouille is great, thus i'm picking it up.

Its the holidays and they want to expand their userbase. People aren't going to buy these movies if they have nothing to play them on.

Quite true, but in my opinion people will not buy movies right away if they have five to watch already either.

Are you serious? Wasn't interested in this movie at all, but better than Finding Nemo? I really might have to check it out now. Being thats my favorite Pixar movie, second to The Incredibles.

I'd guess its a long term strategyto get people to buy HD versions when they have an option later on but that's just me. They may not buy them now but the option is open later.

I also think that Ratatoille is one if not the best Pixar film ever, I was really suprised, I went to the cinema without even planning to watch it (last minute decision with my friends) and I was really impressed, awesome animation movie.

Well it was done by Brad Bird, the guy behind The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. Both of which are great films. The Incredibles was my favorite Pixar film to date.

I've seen Finding Nemo, it was a nice touching story. Ratatouille has a more human connection which I prefer (like The Incredibles). The ending is far fetched, but it's pretty hard to wrap up a story like that. I saw Finding Nemo a while back so the details are fuzzy, but I know that I enjoyed it.

All the Pixar movies have some brilliance to them. At the end of Ratatouille, I see Brad Bird's name throughout the credits and I'm not surprised, this guy's a genius. There was really nothing childish about this movie except some of the goofy character animations.

That would have been the only way I would have seen it. Sadly I missed the trip. Well I guess I'll see next week when I pick it up for the kids. By the way are there any stand alone blu ray owners in here? Picked up one last month for the Disney movies and I picked up the 2 HD DVD players yesterday for the Universal movies. I couldn't hold out any longer.

thats my thinking as well.. get people to jump in, and day and date releases will do well. if they did an a2 with free startrek at 200 bucks, treckies would buy in droves.

Will they do that? What is their price match policy? If they still have the A3 on sale tomorrow for $199 I will try this.

They'll do it because you can just threaten to return the damn product and rebuy it under the new deal if they don't price match it for you. It's usually easier for them to just give you the difference, or in this case, the extra movie.

I just leave mine on all the time. Otherwise my remote has to be programmed with ungodly delays. Once it's on the disc load time isn't too bad. Pretty snappy for DVDs and not much worse for HD-DVDs. I'm glad it doesn't turn itself off after lack of use like the DVD player I replaced with it.
But...but the planet!

speaking of which, wth is my HD Iron Giant, Warner?
It wasn't the most popular of titles, so we'll be lucky if we ever see it... unless they do the "by the Director of The Incredibles" sales pitch. I'm actually looking forward to seeing animation in HD. I rented Happy Feet, but I didn't enjoy it very much.

I wish I could get Miyazaki films in HD DVD, but Studio Ghibli has a deal with Disney.

HiDef Wars just got real! :lol

Probably because he called out a few people sending him emails about his walmart/hd dvd rant. Told them to chill out, remember hes not part of the media nor ever claimed he was and reaffirmed just an enthusiast and stop taking this shit so seriously.

Guess someone wasn't listening about the last part.

Easy there, I am definitely not taking this shit seriously. I just found it hilarious that someone would take the time to hack his website because like you said he is not a part of the media and is just an enthusiast.

no xmas list here, but I have to make sure not to run out of money until January. There's Paprika and Jin-Roh to get as well. I think I'm going to hold off on the Die Hard, probably more of a rental if anything. Then there's Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Shoot 'Em Up. That's it for this year (Shoot 'Em Up is technically next year).
