I just watched Bram Stokers Dracula yesterday and holy christ, it has 32 subtitle options :lol I think thats the most I've ever seen. I thought Hellboy had a lot but wow.

I wish EVERY disc had 32 subtitle options on them. There's absolutely no point in not offering that many options, with the capacity that these discs have, and it would greatly help families which have members who aren't native English speakers. (My wife is Japanese, and it kills me how many discs I've seen with a number of Asian language subtitles, but none for Japanese.)

Same here, we were watching 2001 on blu and it had a gajillion languages but no Japanese. But then again, if there was a Japanese option, then there would not be a need for a "Japanese Version" release in Japan. Guess it's strictly a business move.

So, am I the only one REALLY excited for Close Encounters of the Third Kind on Blu-Ray? Seems like a very small amount of people actually know it's less than two weeks away. This is one of my all-time favorites and it seems like no one cares.

I'd be excited if it weren't coming out in the middle of a torrent of new releases. It would have been awesome to get a couple of months ago when I was hungry for HD stuff.

I've nver gotten it on DVD, though I think I muct have rented it.

So I guess Wisconsin's markup law is going the way of the dodo?

Wal-Marts here ultimately got to sell their A2s for $98. I saw the thread on it at AVS and this afternoon called two local Wal-Marts to confirm.

Here I thought there was no hoopla over these players here at all, despite the fact that both these stores had said last week they had received "a lot" of players. Guess they came in and sold out in between my visits, because I never caught a whiff of them.

Too bad, because a friend of mine had been forced to order from the Best Buy Business site... I'm still waiting to see if his order gets fulfilled, canceled, or changed to an A3.

Anyway, if you live in Wisconsin... chin up, future promotions should be no problem.

speaking of, I saw a preview trailer for this at sears today on their HDTV sets. Looked really awesome. I'm excited about the release but I keep forgetting about when it comes out because this fall is so full of great movie releases. :)

Best Buy did the price match for my A3 and gave me another free movie. :D

2001HD.jpg

So I got 5 free movies instantly and 5 free by mail. 10 total. All for $199. Great deal.

edit: Yes the Best Buy ad is wrong. The A3 is $199 in store and online and you get to pick 3 HD-DVDs for free plus the 2 free pack in movies.

has calmed down a bit.
So my local Kmart finally has HD DVD for sale. One movie, and you guessed it, it's Transformers. The Blu Ray selection is about 15-20 movies, all around $35 per movie.

So I go to the dvd player section, and they had an A3 HD DVD player for sale! Now, I live out in the USVI, so this was shocking to me. I grab it, head out to the register. It rings up for $389. I marched right back to the shelf and put it back. :lol

Anybody know how long this deal will last? I feel like sending my sister out to a Best Buy and having her buy it and pick out the three movies in store.

I do not feel like sorting through all of these pages... I check it almost every day...

Which format is going to win?

Is there going to be a winner?

I have a Sony 27" HD-TV but it is only 1080i... and I do not have the best knowledge in the world for HD. SO, DVD is fine right now...

But anyways... I want the Pirates Trilogy, the Marix movies, Star Wars movies... Indy Jones movies... Pixar flicks... Star Trek movies...

And those all seem to be mixed format... will one format win soon or will be see dual-format forever?

I wouldn't have done that if I were you. None of us *really* know, we just all have our suspicions and beliefs. Go read a specialist forum, trends, press releases and insider comments and make up your own mind.

If you're still confused I suppose I could be persuaded to tell you the real answer. It'll cost you though.

I can't find 2001 at the downtown Futureshop. I should go to HMV.

I think they undershipped it completely. I've looked everywhere I can think of in Edmonton that might sell HD-DVDs short of the South Common where a lot of the big box stores are, but alas, the carless shall not wander.

Even Future Shop online doesn't have it in stock. And amazon.ca says 4-6 weeks to deliver. The BRD doesn't seem to be any more likely to be in stock either, but I wasn't looking as hard.

I'm seriously considering ordering from amazon.com, because I really really want it.

That is the best way to go.
After all is said and done, after all of the agendas play out, and all bias is done with it is all about the movies.

I think 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut both got hit with that problem.

All the Canadian shops had Nov. 20th listed for the Kubrick movies. Has anyone seen them in store up here otherwise. Looks like Amazon has them in stock (US one) and since out dollar is stronger, I may end up ordering from there if the local places don't get Oldboy this week either.

so Best Buy has a thing where you save $10 if you buy two things this week. Ratatouille, Cars, and The Pixar Short Films Collection are in this list so you can but two of them and get $10 off. You can also get $7 in movie bucks for Enchanted (it looks decent enough) if you buy Ratatouille.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
All of a sudden, Best Buy is running laps around what used to be considered the best online merchant for HD, Amazon.

At least Amazon's software is still lower priced, aside from the specials.

Amazon is cheaper but have been hearing horror stories about how long they take to ship lately

Yeah, but Best Buy's sticker prices suck ass. Even in a best-case scenario, you'll pay the same as Fry's even after the discount. You'll probably pay more.

I don't think this was posted, but I was doing some HD reading on DVD Town and skimmed through this article on the recent Blu-Ray media event.

I didn't detect any "spin", as it seemed a fairly matter-of-fact writeup, but what caught my eye was the list of forthcoming Disney releases on a slide from Disney themselves. From the horse's mouth:

"Sleeping Beauty" had been previously announced as the first classic animated title to be released in Blu-ray, and Ho said that after that October '08 release, Disney would be releasing three to four "Platinum" titles every spring and fall.

"Aladdin"
"The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"
"Cinderella"
"Dumbo"
"Freaky Friday"
"Lilo & Stitch"
"The Lion King"
"The Little Mermaid"
"The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"
"Monster's Inc."
"National Treasure"
"101 Dalmatians"
"The Parent Trap"
"Peter Pan"
"Pinocchio"
"Pocahontas"
"The Princess Diaries"
"The Rookie"
"The Santa Clause"
"The Santa Clause 2"
"The Shaggy Dog"
"Toy Story 2"

I've been seeing lots of Disney Blu-Ray/Cars commercials on MHD today. Have they been playing them on any other (more common) HD channels?
