YYZ: Cars is not that good. It has a pretty stale plot full of cliches, which is not the usual Pixar way. It does have some nice story turns and the characters outside of Owen Wilson's initial egomaniac are likable enough.

Hard to try to talk you into it when it's, IMHO, by far the least of the Pixar films. I'll get it, largely for the family-fun element and the easy watchability. But it's such a step down from Nemo and the Incredibles that it really is a shame.

Solo: I still haven't seen Barry Lyndon. And I recently triedt to rewatch Once Upon a Time in America (saw the edited version when it debuted) and still didn't like it.

what's so good about cars? I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes. The jokes were incredibly lame, and knowing that Owen Wilson is the lead voice kinda ruins it for me.

Cars was amazingly bad for a Pixar film. It is a small blemish on their almost perfect track record. I really want to see Ratatouille.

If you can get past the first 15 minutes of Once Upon a Time in America, I think it really becomes a good flick. I have only seen the long version of it though, and it has some very tedious sections. I really like Barry Lyndon also.

I watched about 30 minutes of OUATIA. I started remembering how it all played out and kinda lost interest.

Movie-confession-age: I've never seen any of the Man with No Name trilogy, either.

I'm a viral marketer from Warner. My job here is to decide our future format exclusivity based entirely on whose fans in this thread do the best job of convincing me. You can start anytime, but I should say that Snah's gone a long way to convincing me already. On a related note, I also have three SonyStyle credit cards now.

The person who decides the future format exclusivity of a major movie distribution company is not the same as person in charge of it's viral marketing.

Attempted joke falls flat on its face.

Dude... nevermind, forget it.

On an unrelated note, good news for everyone who ordered the Toshiba A2 when I posted the bestbuybusiness.com link. Reportedly from people who've spoken with them this morning (fatwallet), they're going to be subbing A3s for all of those orders as well, just as they did for the regular BB.com orders.

WOW. Ill say it for the millionth time, but The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is my favorite film ever. You really should see at least that, if not the entire trilogy. All three are incredible.

I did actaully see the opening of the first one, and I thought it was fantastic. Can't remember why I didn't see the whole thing-- it was probably when I lived in a house with a bunch of people.

When they are inevitably released in HD, you should blind buy the trilogy. Lucky for you, its MGM, so I believe that makes it a BRD release.

Imagine being married to someone like that, who sends you over to the Wal Mart in the next town to save the peasants from making a bad format choice. When I first read it I thought it had to be a joke, but with all the posts encouraging him, I just do not know. There are some really crazy people out there.

That's definitely a joke, funny nonetheless. :lol

Edit: After reading some other posts, I'm not so sure. Comedy gold. :lol

i think i'll pick up ratatouille tomorrow. i'm actually kind of lukewarm on pixar, but i've been wanting to watch a cg movie in hi def, and this seems a lot more appealing than ice season iv or whatever

I'll be picking up Ratatouille as well.
Now I'm kind of iffy on Cars from the negatives here.
Both of these Pixar films are the only ones I haven't seen yet.

Eh, I'm sure I'll get at least a few laughs.

I would have gotten both Fox titles that were since delayed...

I really dislike Cars. It's the only Pixar movie I didn't enjoy.

Tomorrow, I'm getting Ratatouille and Oldboy.

Cars isnt as horrible as people would have you believe. If you have kids its a definite buy, and girls like animated movies too.:D
Its one of my niece's favorite movies.

Honestly, I think Ratatouille is my personal movie of the year. It's that good.

You should at least rent cars to give the film a look at. Like I said before the transfer is really impressive.

Surf's Up is impressive from what I've heard and the movie isn't too horrible either. I picked up Meet the Robinsons last week and it's not bad. The food fight that turns into a parody of old martial arts films, complete with bad lip-synching and orange film + grain? just lol funny in an absurd way. and the totally inept bad guy with the frogs and the dinosaur. well, I won't go into too much detail but at any rate I had fun with the film. Not great but it was worth my money.

I'm really surprised that best buy is giving out those A3s to replace the A2s. That's just not normal. Best buy are usually real a-holes about this kind of stuff. Something tells me that they must be getting something 'extra' out of this for themselves.

I dislike the premise of Cars. Given concerns about climate change, oil supplies, and environmentalism generally, I have a problem with a children's movie that champions the Nascar culture.

That said, I saw it on Staz HD, and it looked amazing.

I'm dual-HD, so that tells you something.

I have had nothing but good times with Best Buy customer support.

So, red team was having us believe the A2's were unlimited supply, so why then would they need to replace A2's with A3's.

To be fair, this was based on a quote from Wal-Mart re: the $198 A2 price. They probably meant that Toshiba players at that price were not limited, with the A3 replacing the A2. Just a guess.

Also, yeah, best buy has made me very happy. Not only did they give me an A3 for my $99 A2 order, but I went to the customer service desk yesterday and they let me pick 3 free discs to match their current deal (picked Transformers, Shining, and Shaun of the Dead).

Now Warner wants to make us think it's business as usual! This is getting sad now...

Nearly a week after a Warner VP appeared to indicate otherwise, the studio told High-Def Digest that it has no plans to cease its dual-format stance, pledging a strong line-up for both Blu-ray and HD DVD in 2008.

News that Warner was eying a change in its high-def strategy spread like wildfire last week, following a story in industry trade Home Media Magazine that included a series of comments attributed to Warner VP of High-Definition Media Dan Silverberg at last week's Blu-ray Festival in Los Angeles.

"One thing that may be changing is our strategy," Silverberg was quoted as saying. "When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide -- so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating."

Silverberg reportedly followed up his remarks by citing strong Blu-ray sales for the studio's top-selling '300' release, saying that "we can definitely talk Blu-ray" and that Warner is "committed to the format," a set of comments that seemed to suggest that the studio was considering a move to exclusive support of the Blu-ray format.

Following several days of breathless speculation from fans and industry insiders alike, Warner is now breaking its silence on the matter, referring to Silverberg's remarks as having been "misquoted and misconstrued."

Speaking with High-Def Digest, Jim Noonan, SVP of Strategic Promotion and Communication for Warner Home Entertainment Group said "I can tell you that Warner's position has not changed, and I know that Dan did not intend to suggest that wasn't the case. We support both formats and we have made no decision to alter that policy, nor are there any such announcements coming, or being planned."

As for speculation that the studio is waiting for Q4 sales results before making an announcement of format exclusivity -- perhaps even as soon as this January's CES in Las Vegas -- Noonan shot down any such short-term scenarios.

"Like any major company, we are always reviewing our strategies in every aspect of our business, it is what smart companies do. I can't say what may happen five, ten years down the line. But right now, Warner Bros. has made no decision to change course. We are still onboard with both formats, and will continue [with a strong line-up of new releases and catalog titles], just as we have in the past in supporting HD DVD and Blu-ray."

A few weeks ago I ordered a HD DVD Living Landscapes (nature videos) collection for about $15 or so when the real price was like $150, hoping to take advantage of a price mistake.

I was hoping it would go through, but it's not like I had any interest in them, and soon after got the e-mail that it was no longer an item they were selling.

Soon after, I got yet another e-mail with a $15 gift certificate for any purchase on bestbuy.com, which I used to get a $30 Wii Nyko rechargeable battery pack.

It's not unheard of... Last year Best Buy also gave people huge gift certificates ($50 I think) when they were mistakenly selling HD-A1's for $366 through an in-store network they had a few months before it's release.

Seriously though, things are pretty bad on both sides if you look at the extremes. If you think the BD guy is bad, I raise you this!!

You didn't read the thread on AVS where some guy regularly went to Best Buy, stood by the HD movie titles and handed customers personally made fliers on why HD DVD is better then Blu-ray and how lying and deceitful the Blu-ray association is. His website:

Every time I see someone point to something and act like only one side has it's idiots I just want to throat punch them.
Both sides have idiots.
There is something about a human competitive nature that turns them into assclowns.

Both sides have idiots but team blu ray seems a smidge more shall we say vocal. Pet and the whole 'I bleed blu' brigade are something else.

Concerning the walmart guy who talked 11 out 12 people from buying and hd dvd player even if that was a joke post the others encouraging him were most definitely not joking. That speaks volumes in and of itself.

Lol if he thinks you EVER need 200GB to watch a movie.

I really wish people would stop suggesting that some level of perfection has been achieved. It really is a recurrence of the good old "640k is good enough for anybody." Lossy audio codecs sound damn good, but it doesn't stop people from splooging over lossless audio. If you think lossless video won't someday be a selling point, you're delusional. 200GB is probably barely enough for a lossless encode of just the video of a 2 hour movie (it's not enough for a straight BMP encode). All of that is ignoring the fact that between the ~30GB lossy encodes we have now and the ~350GB an uncompressed lossless encode of a movie there are still improvements in bitrate possible.

If there's one thing that you can count on, it's that the satisfaction of a video or audiophile is only ever temporary.

As far as the walmart thing it seems you have decided to skipped the posts where people showed links of similar HD posts.

None taken and I knew you'd take exception. I dont really visit those other sites except when someone posts a link so maybe my perception is skewed. At least here for the most part we're all (blu and red) civil most of the time.

It's an expression I've heard from some in camp blu ray captive

If I have to draw it up for you, a look at your post history in this very thread has demonstrated a certain enthusiasm for trollbait statements on behalf of HD-DVD. To then make the proclamation that "Both sides have idiots but team blu ray seems a smidge more shall we say vocal" seems disingenuous at worst, ironic at best.

Not that you're the only one in here guilty of boosterism, mind, but that post was rather amusing.

so, eh, about hd movies: i have an sdtv and am planning to buy blade runner: the final cut on brd later this year. since i won't own an hdtv for some time, i've been wondering--will a movie on an hd-format (assuming it has a great transfer) look any better than one on dvd (assuming it has a great transfer) when seen a good ol' sdtv?

yes, i'm a noob.
