so, eh, about hd movies: i have an sdtv and am planning to buy blade runner: the final cut on brd later this year. since i won't own an hdtv for some time, i've been wondering--will a movie on an hd-format (assuming it has a great transfer) look any better than one on dvd (assuming it has a great transfer) on a good ol' sdtv?

yes, i'm a noob.
No.

Holy moly. Best buy here was selling SM trilogy for $69 canadian when it was released. Now the release day sale is over and it's at $85. :( We have two racks full of the box set plus some allocated at the "new release" section.

I'll just hve to pick it up at Syracuse in a couple of weeks.

Anyways, Ratatouille is tomorrow yah? It's mine along with Call of Duty 4. :D

I think the only way it would look better is by *being* a better transfer. I suppose enough DVDs have macroblocking and noise that HD media has at far, far lower levels (if at all). But the big benefit is the resolution, and you won't benefit by that at all.

So (I assume) what you'll see are images on par with the best-looking DVDs you've ever seen.

banding, color, black level and macroblocking would all be significantly improved, as well as audio (assuming the right equipment). I would say it would be better looking than a DVD... however the resolution bump is the biggest bump, and you'll lose that.

I remember hooking my PS3 to my standard TV before we got the HDTV. It seriously didn't look any better than the better DVD transfers out there.

The only tangible difference I would suggest would be the elimination of the awkward pause from dual layer DVDs. Blu-ray discs, and I supposed HDDVDs, have eliminated that.

If I have to draw it up for you, a look at your post history in this very thread has demonstrated a certain enthusiasm for trollbait statements on behalf of HD-DVD. To then make the proclamation that "Both sides have idiots but team blu ray seems a smidge more shall we say vocal" seems disingenuous at worst, ironic at best.

Not that you're the only one in here guilty of boosterism, mind, but that post was rather amusing.

I know I'm not without fault but I'm reformed no more baiting from me. Scouts honor!

Concerning the walmart guy who talked 11 out 12 people from buying and hd dvd player even if that was a joke post the others encouraging him were most definitely not joking. That speaks volumes in and of itself.

Read about the HD DVD dude up above.

Not sure how you can get more vocal than that. Handing out self-made 'information sheets' (illegally I would think) right inside of a store … and creating a website specifically to ‘battle’ BD.

On my 32inch HD CRT in 1080i I noticed a huge diff from DVD. Mostly though in contrast and color. Fine detail was noticable as well. I did A to B comparisons with The Polar Express and I was really impressed by what I saw. Since I've gotten a 1080p panel all of the extra detail beyond that was impressive.

I think if you have a SD TV that is calibrated well through its menus you'd probably get better color and contrast as well. Fine details however you'd probably not notice.

I have, PS3 through composite on a 30 year old sony CRT. Worked just fine, looked just like a DVD.

So where do I to get good prices on Hd dvds?? Is there a definite site?

My personal suggestion is get an amount of money you want to spend in hand and go to Best Buy and check their open box area.
You can make a killing.

Other than that Amazon is surprisingly good and they have free shipping.

Has this happened to anyone else? For some reason, they've now started taking SEVEN DAYS to ship everything I order. This all started with my Robocop blu-ray preorder (I emailed them asking why it was taking so long, and they never gave me a straight answer, but I did get a $10 off coupon code), and I've noticed that they're already "delaying" preorders estimated ship times. My copy of Blade Runner isn't scheduled to ship until six days after it's released, and my wife's preorders of Rent and Hairspray (Christmas presents), won't even ship until Christmas Eve. Items that are in stock and ready to ship out take SIX TO SEVEN DAYS to actually ship. I realize that super saver shipping takes a little longer to get to me, but it shouldn't be delayed a whole week before being shipped from their warehouses.

Better color accuracy, cleaner picture with no artifacts etc etc. Just take a look at the Patriot:

To be fair, this was based on a quote from Wal-Mart re: the $198 A2 price. They probably meant that Toshiba players at that price were not limited, with the A3 replacing the A2. Just a guess.

Also, yeah, best buy has made me very happy. Not only did they give me an A3 for my $99 A2 order, but I went to the customer service desk yesterday and they let me pick 3 free discs to match their current deal (picked Transformers, Shining, and Shaun of the Dead).

I'm assuming you haven't gotten the player yet, so how did you get them to match? Did you just take your receipt over there and ask for it?

I took my shipment confirmation email, and they did a return/rebuy (while the item is still enroute).

Actually , that is one of the nice parts of this board.
Nobody has to call for a ban because some people are just that good at doing it themselves.
Nobody attacked you.
You came in and said right from your very first post in here that you do not care about high def and you are here just to stir shit and watch the drama.
Then someone made a polite suggestion.
Your second post was another personal attack, as was the one that followed.

This is not the gaming forum, and as much as alot of the people do not totally get along this kind of thing is not needed or wanted.

My picks

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
Did I get "outed" yet? :lol

I turned in my Blu Ray movies at Netflix and should get The Reaping, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, and License to Wed. All pretty recent movies. I have to say that Netflix seems to have much better HD DVD selection than BB Online. Not only that, but their Blu Ray selection may be even bigger, going by the number of "now" and "long wait" titles out I saw during the short time that I was "format neutral".

chumky, apparently there's a new list with TMNT and Syrianna, if you like those.

ookie: U2 is good for fans of the film, but as an HD showpiece, not so much. It's mostly black and white, and features few "WOW" moments. It still looks gorgeous at times and sounds terrific on my setup. A big step up from dvd, but not reference material at all.

I heard it's pretty terrible, and I don't like Sandler anyway, but my wife wants to see it and she likes the fat guy from King of Queens. That movie isn't supposed to come out till tomorrow, so I'm pretty surprised they shipped it today.

That's what I'd go for.

Ocean's Thirteen is out here today and I don't know what on earth is going on with the HD releases. Most sites only list Ocean's Thirteen on its own without even the option of the box set (I only want Ocean's Eleven), but the HMV site was offering Ocean's Eleven on HD and BD as a standalone release. No mention of it anywhere else.

I ordered the HD DVD, figuring that the worst that could happen was that there was a mixup and they cancel the order or send me the DVD and I could get a refund, and something has shipped. Seems that we'll find out what's happening when it turns up in a couple of days, but they still don't exactly make it easy to get HD movies around here.

My friend has an SDTV but is buying HD and BD movies. It makes sense being that they look slightly better than DVD (better colours, little or no artifacting, and he swears they look sharper) and if you have a decent sound system you can take advantage of the better audio. Also when the times comes for him to buy an HDTV he has a library of HD movies ready to go and be enjoyed all over again.

Anyone who got a 5.1 system well into the DVD era and got to revisit all their movies with a completely transformed audio experience knows how much fun that can be.

Yeah, I was thinking more for sound than anything else.
Plus I am a huge U2 fan so I have to always give it the go.
