Do you recall the point where Peter get's attacked in the beginning and they're flying between buildings.. The computer generated characters just seemed so smooth to me, and lacked detail. So in HD, this isn't more pronounced?

Didn't notice. But then again, *all* cgi stands out to me like a sore thumb, so I may not be the best judge. I can spot it where others don't notice, and I think it looks bad.

One of hte reasons I hated Blade II. It was awful in that. generally, CGI stuff has this-- I dunno how to describe, texture, sheen, grit-- to it that I can see a mile away.

Yah, it's more apparent in HD to find the CG seams that it can be obvious. I guess studios will have to adjust to the new market... Whenever it takes off.

Notice them in Letter from Iwo Jima.

Awesome sale, I just built my hd-dvd library and surprisingly enough a good number of these titles are still hd-dvd exclusive. Good deal, now hopefully I can get Best Buy to reprint my rebate receipt that I lost so I can still get my 5 free mail-in movies :/

I got:

Batman Begins
2001
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
V for Vendetta
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
Casino
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Goodfellas
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Last Samurai

Came out to $203 shipped, saved $50 and got 12 movies for less than $17 apiece. Not too shabby at all for HD media :D

What? Where?

Low resolution pictures, so obviously not representative of the full quality of the blu-ray, but still astounding. This is a 1968 film we're talking about.

ScreenShots2001020a.jpg

AVSforum places it on Tier 0, the "completely flawless" tier, with only 5 other titles sharing that rank. Highdefdigest calls the video transfer a "godsend."

I just saw this news right now, and I'm actually surprised that Blu-Ray did so well for the week given all the FUD about how these extremely cheap players changes the face of this war.

Come now, I know you are trying to turn over the give peace a chance leaf and all but some people can not be in the thread all day.
Let him enjoy it a little.
Hell can you even imagine how much shit talking this thread would be hit with if HD actually won a week?
You would have people that have never posted in here before jumping in left and right ( kind of like the Paramount announcement and the $99 announcement).

I think he came off as mildly restrained.

Well then i have to ask, why did you believe the fud? I didnt buy for a second that Spiderman wouldnt propel blu-ray to a good week.

alright ill give him that he's not in here all the time. Yes i could imagine if HD DVD won a week, it would probably be unbearable, more 1 time posters would come out of the woodwork to stick it to sony.
But two wrongs dont make a right, right?

I can't even imagine how next week is going to look with Ratatouille and Cars added into the mix...

You could see 80:20....EASILY....I'm not joking.

Like I said all along, the HD format wars currently aren't going to be won by cheap players. People who own an HDTV and buy blu-ray or HD-DVD movies that are more expensive than DVDs are still not your typical consumers. They are still high end. The fire sale of cheap players really does nothing to influence this war.

What will influence this war are a solid, established brand to push through the acceptance of Blu-Ray:

-PS3 does that, HD-DVD doesn't have anything close to that.
-Diverse range of studio support. With Fox, Sony, MGM, and Disney -- Blu-Ray has it. HD-DVD buying paramount out probably allowed them not to get obliterated this fall, but it's not enough.

Did anyone here really expected the $99.00 sale to make an impact in a matter of 2 days?

Well you would think that if someone is going to buy a player that they would at least buy a movie or two to go with it no?
I mean i know that I would.
That plus the fact that there were quite a few A2s that were traded out for A3s with a few movies of your choice with them that do count as register sales.

I wonder if these HD-DVD buyers were nothing more than ebay scalpers or current HD-DVD owners that wanted a stand alone unit?

They likely would, but at least some of those $99 players are probably sitting on ebay (7000 or so went up almost instantly), some of them are probably for Christmas gifts, and probably a few are buying as a second player or an upgrade from 1st gen. or 360 add-on.
That plus the fact that there were quite a few A2s that were traded out for A3s with a few movies of your choice with them that do count as register sales.
can you put a number "quite a few", because it was only people who ordered from a best buy site accessible through a google cache link that are reporting having been given A3's?

Compared to the 90,000 sold that weekend, it seems unlikely that would make a difference...

I'd say the big impact on last week came from the $399 PS3. Whether gamers were buying a movie or two, or whether enthusiasts were buying the cheapest Blu-ray player widely available, they probably saw a good bump in software from this...

I can see your point but since it's a 1 day sale on a work day, I can see most people just getting the player, just for the sake of getting it and then most people will be taking advantage of the free movies. There are also the "second unit" people And of course, there are the profiteers. The A3's that were swapped out took a while to ship. I can see people waiting to get the unit first before jumping in full bore. Just my take.

I think next week will be a bigger week for Blu-ray. No big HD DVD titles besides a bad comedy, no $99 secret friday sales, going against Spiderman & Pixar.

Now Shrek week will be interesting. Too bad Dreamworks didn't package the trillogy like Matrix and Spiderman.

Also for Shrek week is Warner's big Ocean release. Aside from HP, that is going to be a very closely monitored set of titles. :)

this really suprises me, there doesn't seem to be that much of a push for Shrek HD DVD, the comericals haven't been "on DVD and HD DVD" and I haven't seen anything in print. Plus what the hell is Dreamworks smoking by not making a box set "trilogy" of all three shrek movie on HD DVD?? considering they have made truck loads of money off the movies why would they NOT make a box set??!!

I did see one Shrek 3 Hd-dvd commercial last night, though I have seen tons of them for the dvd that do not even mention the HD version.
I do have an opinion why they are not releasing a boxed set yet but I will keep it to myself.

edit: Tonight the girlfriend and I are checking out "Return to House on Haunted Hill." Probably a bad movie, but it's got that fancy new interactive branching feature that lets you choose what the characters do (fight or run? left door or right?) and--heh--how they die.

It's Warner. HD DVD and Blu-ray. Hopefully it's good for a laugh.
