Walmart also had 14.98 bluray movies.
And do you in any realistic fashion think that even though nowhere else in the entire universe including Best Buy where 30% of the A2s were sold, that all of the sudden at Walmart hd sold more than Spiderman 3, the Spiderman boxed set and other blu movies?
Are you honestly going to try and hold that as some kind of actual possibility?
I swear to god that hd people are worse than anything on the gaming side.
All walmart would change is the volume, not the ratio.

So much for "bu bu Walmary am going hd exclusive".

:lol :lol :lol

Jesus, dude! Calm down, you're going to hurt yourself!

If you take off the boxing gloves for a second and re-read my post, I think you'll see that I was asking you to help me understand the relevance and accuracy of Nielsen numbers today. I wasn't dismissing them. I was merely acknowledging that they must be less accurate now than they were before, and asking how best to interpret them today.

By the way, your blow-ups as of late have got YOU looking like the one who's shaken. So relax, hold steady. YOU ARE WINNING. lol

And I'll thank you kindly for not putting words in my mouth. I am quite sure that Spiderman and the other great titles on Blu-ray these past two weeks have given the format quite a boost. Personally, I'd thought the most recent ratio would be 60:40 if the red side was lucky. Now I'm thinking Nielsen is likely to be another 70:30 for the current week as well. But I'd like to know how to interpret the numbers now the nation's biggest retailer, who does not report to Nielsen, has gotten more involved.

Thank you! :)

Why should Stringer come off like some loud arrogant asshole that everyone loves to jump on a message board and say "sony are such arrogant pricks i hate them"
Look what happened when Paramount came out so loudly about Transformers.
If you notice this week with the Spiderman numbers Sony was very low key also.
You see, when you win week after week after week you do not need to be arrogant, the numbers say all that is needed to say.

Say, what's the weather like today? May I suggest a walk in the park and a breath of fresh air? Take a cue from Stringer. If you are winning, you can afford to relax. ;)

Fair enough.
As to why I am so cranky about the Stringer thing, you would be amazed what people are trying to read into it. It is honestly mind numbing.

As far as the Nielsen thing, I would have to assume with the fact that they are fully aware of the walmart situation.
If all 90k A2s went at Walmart I would say that there could be some fluctuation, but 30% also went at Best Buy and that doesn't count all of the people that pricematched at Circuit City and if those did not have a tangible effect then I just can not believe that Walmart did.
That could be for multiple reasons, I mean like it or not a ton of them did end up on Ebay, and alot of people bought multiple A2s. Plus you do have the gift factor also.

Each time I browse through this thread, I become even more convinced that several of you are actually employed by these companies. I guess it's just a pipe dream to have a board where consumers can legitimately discuss high-def media, instead of being forced to suffer through ridiculously hostile exchanges from viral-marketers.

Oh well, as evidenced by AVS, I suppose it could always be worse.

Have you been drinking again? Out of Chartreuse? Nice generalization there. Since we're generalizing I'd like your opinion on the group who claim: hd dvd owners dont deserve blu ray, who throw around that they pull 6 figures per year and thats why they can afford to support blu ray while others cannot. The group who takes cheap shots at peoples moms and troll hd dvd supporters on xbox live.

I thought walmart was carrying the A2 in store? I haven't been in a while.

Lastly, the only people who seem pissed of in this thread are you chemo, crayon back in the day and occasionally captive. Van gets a little worked up occasionally but I wouldn't go so far as to say pissed off.

As to your first question, they are bottom feeding asshats.
As to your second, any they carry would be stock left over. Best Buy, Circuit City and other say that they will be getting no more A2s so I presume it would be the same for wallyworld.

As to the last part, I like to think that most of the time I am pretty laid back but some things do piss me off to huge degrees
But when I do go on rants I at least try to have some kind of facts to back me up.

Go with whichever answer makes you feel better.
Next week none of it will matter and then there will be some new conspiracy against HD.

Well I tried to understand it, but I really don't think it's appropriate for a man in Stringer's position to backpedal--or even give the impression of backpedaling--when his company is locked in an epic struggle such as this.

I mean, it undermines everything they're trying to do. What must his employees think? What must Sony's partners think? What do the studios and retailers and consumers think?

It's bad PR, and no company needs bad PR.

Perhaps Stringer's trying to "play nice" and somehow appeal to Warner by acting like he's rolling over and saying, "You know, guys, we were in a position to win this thing and put HDM on a path to growth and mass-market acceptance, but that may not happen now unless you help us out. So why don't you maybe come on over and help us decide this thing?"

That seems outlandish, but perhaps no more outlandish than a guy in Stringer's position saying what he did in the first place.

It wasn't the A2's, it was some no name company that was supposed to be making cheap Hd players. I believe that may be what you are talking about.

Not that I am aware of, I am only going what I see in the stores around me and other people see in theirs along with the fact that there is no mention of the A2 in the black friday ad for walmart or anywhere on their website at all.
It is a good move for Toshiba all around anyway to be honest.
They got good press out of the A2 sale, but now they can focus on their other four or five models

I believe a Wal-Mart spokesperson was quoted on saying quantities of the A2 were "not limited."

That said, the A2 is in stock on walmart.com at a puzzling price of $229.28.

Okayyy, I don't get it. Who's going to buy one at Wal-Mart for $230, aside from someone who somehow escaped hearing about the big sale a few weeks ago?

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5723662

This strategy is strange. Once Tosh and WM started selling these players for $198--and subsequently, $98, I think they drew a line in the sand that now, a lot of customers simply will not cross. Why pay $230 or even $198 this holiday when retailers have already put the players on sale for half that?

Can't imagine Tosh is selling many players right now.

And while I had assumed the big sale was the opening shot in a huge volley, I don't know that for a fact until it happens. And it may not.

For Toshiba's sake, it better if they want a shot at pulling this out.

Wal-Mart Stocks Sub-$200 HD DVD Player

Tags: Wal-Mart, Toshiba (all tags)

It's official. After weeks of rumors, Wal-Mart has begun selling Toshiba's second-gen HD-A2 HD DVD player for $198, setting a new low-price record for a stand-alone next-gen player.

Although reports of a rollback for the HD-A2 first surfaced earlier this month, it wasn't until the middle of this week that consumers began spotting endcaps with that magic price cropping up at select Wal-Mart locations nationwide.

In an article first published by Fortune Magazine, Wal-Mart spokesperson Melissa O'Brien confirmed the price cut and denied rumors that each Wal-Mart store would stock only 18 units of the Toshiba player, saying "there are no limited quantities for stores or purchases."

The spokesperson would not comment on the retail giant's holiday plans for HD DVD and Blu-ray, other than to say "we know HD DVD and Blu-ray are going to be popular items this holiday season for some of our customers."

Toshiba's 1080i HD-A2 was originally released this past January at a retail price of $499, but is now available at various retailers at prices ranging from $230-280. The HD-A2's successor -- the third-generation HD-A3 -- is due to hit stores November 1 with a list price of $299.

Wal-Mart says the $198 price for the HD-A2 is being offered for in-store purchases only (their website still lists it at $274).

The Chinese HD DVD player you guys are thinking about is made by Venturer. Supposedly it was supposed to hit in time for the holiday season this year. We'll see.

The Venturer HD DVD player is showing at Target.com for $249. Availability, 2-6 weeks.

http://www.target.com/Venturer-HD-D...315?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k:venturer&page=1

Either it's coming, and it's a big part of Toshiba's holiday plan (selling for less than $150 when it actually becomes available) or it's pretty much a non-event, IMO.

Since Tosh cracked the $100 mark with its own players already, I'm not sure a Venturer unit is going to benefit them much unless it's unimaginably cheap.

edit: NolbertoS: check your PM RE: Wii girl.

I think you are touching on one of the things that I think was bad about the whole thing.
Now Black Friday sales are something that everyone understands are just one time special things. But by doing the $99 dollar thing I believe that it kind of confused many people.
Look on the message boards alone and you have scores of people that thought it would be a new regular price when you be honest there was nothing to support that expectation.
The problem is that now when people see 199 or even 179 HD players it seems too expensive where as before the $99 thing they would be seen as great prices.
In the long run they may have actually hampered their growth in the long term just for the quick flash.

The problem with that to me, is that it can also trickle over to blu sales also.

On a side note, I finally watched Ratatouille.
I am honestly surprised how much that I liked it all and all, since I am honestly ( don't kill me) not a fan of Pixar stuff.
I did kind of like the Incredibles, but skipped a ton of other stuff because it just didn't hit me right.
Maybe it is because I watch alot of Iron Chef and Iron Chef America and Alton Brown stuff :lol but Ratatouille just hit on all marks and I think it found the right balance of "for the kids" meets "for the grown up kids".
I think saying any more about how it looks and sounds would be redundant but if you are on the fence about the movie get it, or at least rent it and then get it.

I don't think a $199 price would be a horrible thing to have after the Wal-Mart doorbuster, but it needs to be the standard price of entry at all retailers. Basically, the A3 should be $199 everywhere now for the entire holiday season, and even cheaper at the big holiday sales. Something like the Venturer player or leftover A2 stock should be $149. The A3 is back up to $260-$299 and that's too much for an entry-level dedicated player.

I believe the A3 will be officially dropped to $199 very shortly. Nothing else makes sense. No one's heard anything about the Venturer in awhile either - there must be another shoe to drop.

That's kind of been Toshiba's modus operandi... They're quiet, then they come out of the dark with a big right hook, then they disappear back into the dark. Then just when you let your guard down again...

I agree with both of you. A3 at $199 with occasional sales, combined with the Shrek-themed hardware ads, and that's about on par with or better than most people expected from the red team this holiday.

Why is the A2 only 1080i? Is it just economics or is there a technical obstacle?

Just a price thing.
Toshiba as the A20 and the A30 which are the 1080p versions, as well as the Ax2 and Ax3.
It is not bad business to be honest because out of all people who have HDTVs, I would say only 35% have 1080p sets. ( at least at this time)

So...it's been a while since I've followed the HD format war (primarily because of my disgust with some companies aligning themselves with HD-DVD - not because its HD-DVD, but because it just simply prolongs the goddamn war).

I've skimmed through the last page and a half and don't know what the hell is going on, aside from an A2 player being offered at a $200 price point.

So my question is: How goes the war? Have we seen a significant impact due to the cheaper HD-DVD player? Are blu-ray discs still outselling hd-dvd ones?

Business as usual pretty much.

For the record a supposed insider says that the 130k included the boxed set for Spiderman 3.
I do not know anything about his track record, I know that HD people like to say he is full of shit 99% of the time but of course this time they insist he is all knowing.

Actually, he and Willis make a nice duo. It's very cliché, but the movie was better for it imo. There's a lot of parts where I just lol'd due to how awesome John McClane is and the shit he pulls off in this movie. Justin Long definitely doesn't hurt the movie (he was cool in it), but the Mac commercials don't help his career.

Saw you post earlier but was on my Q at the time and dont like to post using its tiny Querty keyboard.

1) When WM ran the HD DVD's for $14.96 there were 0 BD's at the stores for $14.96. They had a total of 3 Fox BDs online for $14.96.

2) The A2 and A3 are BOTH carried at certain stores. The same ones that carry the Sony S300 BD player. Its only in about 20% of all Wal Mart B&M locations.

As for Neilson not counting WM: I personally dont care because the people that matter, the movie studios themselves have access to WM's point of sale system and can track their merchandise in real time at any or all stores.

Not trying to start crap just pointing it out.

1) Fair enough, I was only going by the site and that people on forums said they had a small selection at the price.

2) I will have to take your word on that, because at the Super Walmart here in St Petersburg Florida and the two normal walmarts in St Pete and Clearwater do not carry them and when I go to the website only the two Blu players available at select stores and the A3 is online though you can have it delivered to the store for free.
Of course there will be twenty people who pop on and insist that their Walmart has a stack of A2s and A3s with strobe lights and red carpet... (not talking about you, you know what I mean).

As far as the Walmart thing, I agree with you.
And as I say If Walmart was that much of an impact then I would have to assume that there is no excuse for Red to not win this week and the week after considering the people who bought their players at Walmart were such hardcore movie buyers.
For the record too, Toshiba has never been shy about press releases and if their Walmart numbers were worth mentioning you would think that they would say something to gloat about it.

I am in the camp that believes you wont see any serious impact of this past sale or any sale this holiday until after December 26th. I work retail and we sell a ridiculous amount of movies, videogames, music, etc... after the holidays in January.

I also believe that CES '08 we will see something that will finally point towards an end of this "war' in either direction.

Quite true.
People have to realize that one of the most common gift is a gift certificate as well returning junk gifts for the things you actually want.

I also agree about CES

So why not just kill of Bluray now and be done with it if it's not that important?

Though HD-DVD players cost less it is the inferior format. You have companies supporting and being loyal to blu-ray and you even see stores, producers and consumers being loyal and supporter for blu-ray. HD-DVD has yet to have a better movie selling week then blu-ray and simply the biggest movie industries want blu-ray. I really dont think FOX and Disney would even care that the price range is so enormous. What they care is what is better.

I agree it's the best Pixar movie by far. I loved it, and I was a Pixar fan before, but this took Pixar to yet another level of quality. Amazong.

And this war is pissing me off. I got a PS3 so obviously I'm invested in Blu-ray. It bugs me that I can't get Ang Lee's The Hulk (because screw you people it's the best comic book movie IMO) and Transformer's. I am going to pick up The Lookout because I loved that movie.

So if Blu-ray has been winning the race for over a year, why are some of the studios refusing to release their titles on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray? It must just be politics?

OK, someone help me claim my 5 free mail-in Blu Ray discs.

I bought my PS3 on ebgames.com, and printed out their form for 5 free movies. Two questions:

1. They included no receipt in the box, unlike BestBuy or Amazon. Will it be sufficient to print out my completed sale page from ebgames.com? I saved the page.

2. The PS3 box seems to have two barcodes on it. Which one should I cut out? Both?

Thanks.

Don't wonder to hard. If you want Universal get a cheap HD player. Both formats have movies i want to see, and I refuse to play politics with who's gonna win what. Because whoever would win you would still have to wait for the other studios to transfer ex-exclusive titles over to the winning format. That won't fly with me, I love movies to much. And HDM didn't help me one bit.

Because whoever would win you would still have to wait for the other studios to transfer ex-exclusive titles over to the winning format. That won't fly with me, I love movies to much. And HDM didn't help me one bit.

I don't really care enough to start supporting a format that I don't want to succeed.

I'm just wondering why Universal is with Toshiba in all of this. What do they get out of it?

If I remember correctly it is bad blood with Sony.

If it didn't ship with an invoice you should be able to print one

Do you think the 'product sold' page will suffice? Shows the PS3, says its fully paid for... but doesn't actually say it shipped IIRC.

Also, which of the PS3's barcodes should be clipped and sent?

Thanks.

For the barcode it will be whichever one you use to register the PS3 on the PS site.
