I don't really care enough to start supporting a format that I don't want to succeed.

I'm just wondering why Universal is with Toshiba in all of this. What do they get out of it?

I noticed you used 'want to succeed' as opposed to 'think will succeed'. Seriously are you on Sony's payroll or wtf?

My bad. I thought you liked movies not formats. And Universal is getting the same thing out of it as Disney with Blu ray. Money.

Well you support one or the other. If HD-DVD succeeds then blu-ray won't. Only one will make it and assuming he owns a PS3 its clear as to why he doesn't want HD-DVD to succeed.

Both Disney and Fox I thought both expressed their views and opinions and have said that they support and are loyal to blu-ray and that it was their choice to develop exclusively for blu-ray.

Why? If I actually cared a whole lot about HD media (versus upscaled DVDs) I'd buy a combo player.

Because I love movies.

Because you have some restraint and realise that it's in your best interest to see a single unified HD format*, and you do what you can to bring about that.

*by this, I simply mean a format where all movies are available for it; not necessarily where other formats don't exist.

You act as if that is an option. I am not paying $1,200 to watch HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs in one disk layer. I don't want to be in search for two different formats when I go to the store. The whole process is just crazy and unnecessary. There should only be one new format and it should be the superior one and one that the majority wants in all categories. The consumers, the producers the retailers and the companies have all favored Blu-Ray as to date.

Do you have evidence stating otherwise? Don't think for one second that it isn't.

Why would a company randomly create their movies exclusive for a format that has been getting slaughtered by their opponent since release? They have even admit that HD-DVD doesn't have enough space as well. If anything you go neutral in this situation rather then making movies only for the format that is getting crushed.

Am I on sony's payroll? A few trolls keep trying to bring this up. If you have any evidence, I'd kindly ask you to provide it. This kind of nonsense about calling people out as 'viral marketers' is a ban worthy offense, you know.

I want the format to succeed because:

A) the format is going to have a long life simply because it's intrinsically tied to the Playstation 3.

B) It has the most CE support.

C) It has the most studio support.

D) It's currently selling the most.

E) It's technically superior to HD-DVD.

F) It has the most retailer support.

Of course, I think they will succeed as well, but that's besides the point.

FIREBABY said:

I do enjoy HD movies. But on the same token, I don't need to have every single HD movie that releases. I've chosen Blu-Ray as the brand I am supporting and can wait for Paramount's contract to expire and Universal's stubbornness to subside. I don't feel like wasting money on multiple players or movies. If you feel differently, that's fine...this is just how I personally feel about things.

It just seems like Universal is the lone ranger going against overwhelming odds for no apparent reason. Cold, hard cash? I guess...but it appears to me that it would make more sense for studios to be Blu-Ray exclusive given the overwhelming industry support it has compared to HD-DVD.

Thats evidence for Paramount but that has yet to be evidence for Disney or Fox. The develop for it because its the superior format and it is the winning format. Same cant be said for Paramount. It is obvious that they got payed due to what I said above.

Fiixed. No offense Snah but you do seem to "troll' alot on the opposite format for the sake of Sony on the most part. And its nothing wrong with loving your console. Just ease up a bit.

Then why complain about why a studio supports one format? And no you didn't choose Blu-Ray it choose you. Since its was included in every PS3 sold.

Are we arguing about whether or not Paramount/Dreamworks got paid or not by the HD-DVD group? There's no logical reason for them to drop BD support when they did, money trumps logic. PS3 was going to get a price drop (i.e. 40GB model), and the holidays are coming up. A movie like Transformers would've sold more than double what it did its first week.

I would not be surprised if there was evidence of Fox and Disney being offered something (maybe not money directly in their pockets), but some kind of incentive that made them side with Sony. These are the biggest entertainment companies in the world, they're in it for the money :lol

I don't "troll" the other format. If you enjoy it, and support it, more power to you. I have different beliefs on the subject and I'll just leave it at that.

As for supporting Blu-Ray for the sake of Sony? Sony has nothing to do with it, really, outside of the fact that they are a movie studio that is providing their library to the media as well as establishing it in their videogame console. I'm glad that sony has made the decision to pack the Playstation 3 with Blu-Ray, as it gives me a legitimate excuse to buy Blu-Ray movies. Bottom line: If Blu-Ray wasn't standard with the PS3, I wouldn't be supporting any format right now.

Then why complain about why a studio supports one format? And no you didn't choose Blu-Ray it choose you. Since its was included in every PS3 sold.

I'm not complaining, per se, I'm just bewildered about their support for HD-DVD, as it makes no real sense given the recent turn of events. As I said earlier, they're pretty much all alone supporting a brand that is technically inferior, selling less than the competition, and has less industry support as a whole. I can understand going Blu-Ray exclusive based upon these merits, but to stay with HD-DVD makes no sense to me if they're not being paid off.

I understand Toshiba's desire, I do not understand Universal's.

Thank you. Thats all I'm saying. There were other incentives for Fox and Disney. Mainly better copy protection, which in turn keeps them more profitable. Whatever. I'm out for the night.

Peace.

I have to say that the whole "chose blu because it came with the PS3 "is honestly not close to true, well not for everyone and kind of a cop out though I know not meant that way in this case.

For me, it's kind of odd how it works.

I purchased my PS3 at launch for Blu-Ray...

Yet, I supported Blu-Ray because it came in my PS3...

I also picked it up because it had superior specs and more studio support. That just sealed the deal.

I think if the PS3 had just a regular DVD player I would more than likely not be supporting any format. I think that would hold true for a lot of people as well. Hell, HD-DVD might have been the winner in that scenario.

Can you please give me your impressions of which format is technically superior and has better studio support, Snah? I'm not clear based on your three separate posts on the matter in this page alone. Jesus; people accuse you of being a viral marketer because you act like one.

That's not how it works. You provide evidence for the claim you make. The other person doesn't have to provide evidence that states otherwise when they didn't claim anything in the first place.

OK, someone help me claim my 5 free mail-in Blu Ray discs.

I bought my PS3 on ebgames.com, and printed out their form for 5 free movies. Two questions:

1. They included no receipt in the box, unlike BestBuy or Amazon. Will it be sufficient to print out my completed sale page from ebgames.com? I saved the page.

2. The PS3 box seems to have two barcodes on it. Which one should I cut out? Both?

Thanks.

I just sent out mine this morning. The instructions from Best Buy said to cut out the UPC barcode, so I cut out the one that said POS (point of sale). Hope it's the correct one.

For the record a supposed insider says that the 130k included the boxed set for Spiderman 3.
I do not know anything about his track record, I know that HD people like to say he is full of shit 99% of the time but of course this time they insist he is all knowing.

Is this Beatboy again?

If so, that would line up with the "disappointing" ange that EngadgeHD ran with-- although IMHO it's still darned impressive, considering the cost of the box.

And considering it is packed in with the 40gb PS3.
Either way it's all good and another good week.

Yep.

1. Spiderman 3 was less popular than Transformers for DVD sales, and by a pretty large margin. This means that even by being dramatically less popular, Spiderman 3 blu-ray sold more than Transformers on HD-DVD.

2. Spiderman Box Set cost $60. In terms of revenue, Spiderman did quite well I'd say. The spiderman franchise generated 4.8 million vs. 1.8 million for Transformer's first week.

3. Next week will be very interesting. Ratatouille + Cars + Residual Spidey sales should put the ratio to its highest yet. I'm guessing over 80:20.

btw, how does nielsen determine their marketshare figures?

Is it strictly in terms of UNITS SOLD...so, for instance, the spiderman trilogy would only count as 1 UNIT...essentially given equal weight to a single movie?

revolves around more then just the format war, extends into music. Universal gets money for each zune sold, funny how recently universal pulled out of their itunes contract.

MS is backing toshiba, and uni to derail the war until they usher in the digital distribution for movies they want to dominate.

no thx, i like my movies on physical media, not data on an HD.

I think this war will probably end after this Christmas, and will solely depends on the PS3's christmas sales.

If I can move 3+ million units between now and January 30th, this war should be over by Valentines Day

3 million PS3 sales is still only 300-600K real BR sales when it comes down to software buyers though. No matter what happens, it is not going to be a holiday, or a weeks sales that determines this shit. It is going to be a season, or a year, or at least a month. People like to look at this as a game, where the guy with the most points wins. Just as the video game war has a lot of question marks, 10 or 40 percent of a billion dollar market is not very cut and dry when it comes to survival. HD-DVD just like Gamecube has at least a couple of years left in it before it calls it quits.

I think Sony's goal is 10 million PS3s in the hands of consumers by March '08, it's just a goal. I don't think there will be any more price cuts until next fall, even then it would only be $50?

all you need are sales of BD software high enough so that multi-HD-disc company will mainly start making BD, and finally, when monthly HD-DVD sales are like in the hundred, then the war is over

While that's an interesting theory - just wanted to point out that Universal Music Group != Universal Pictures, and that Universal Music Group is making Blu-ray discs... (list of companies supporting Blu-ray here: http://www.blu-raydisc.com/index.html)

Agreed, and that year will be 2007. We've already had a whole year of BluRay domination, and if Christmas doesn't change that, the six months followng sure aren't.

Universal and Sony have bad blood going back to the landmark Betamax trial which Sony won in the Supreme Court, allowing anyone to record TV, radio, content for their own personal use. Universal didn’t like the prospect of people recording their films off TV.

At a high level that bitterness still exists from the GE side. They are not naturally partners, although they did for UMD. Maybe the fact that UMD wasn’t quite the success that was hoped made Universal weary…anyway Universal was bought out like Paramount.
