The problem with saying the PS3 shouldn't count toward blu-ray hardware sales is this. Everytime someone asks me about blu-ray I tell them to buy a PS3. It still has the best playback, fastest loading times, and it is the most upgradable. I have had a couple of people still want to buy standalones, but really the PS3 is still the best blu-ray player out, until more powerful hardware can be put into standalones...

I want to do the BOGO deal, but I've already got The Prestige, Casino Royale, both Pirates Movies...

I really wish Crank was on that list.

You just cannot quantify it either way. We know that the BR movie sales are mainly attributed to people who buy the PS3, but we also know that the majority of PS3 buyers are not purchasing it because of BR. On the other hand you have HD-DVD standalones selling much better, but BR disk sales winning out. It is just not something that can be gauged in a very literal way. If you count PS3 sales you are artificially inflating the numbers, if you do not you are selling them short.

well I'm somewhat familiar with the british accent and love it/make fun of it sometimes. Just turn on the subtitles. I had to watch it twice to fully understand the story.

Well we know that Sony has been ok still putting a little effort into umds, and we know that the Toshiba is so committed if that shoe drops doesn't it.

opinion time... ( I know it isn't about movies but it kind of relates)
I am looking at new tvs and pretty much am set on which one I want but my question is, is six inches more worth another $300?

Factor A) I live in an apartment so it is not like big home theater type thing.
Factor B) I do not want to even think about another tv for a few years.

Have already factored in things like 1080p/24, hdmi 1.3, 120mhz, pc inputs and pretty much anything as far as specs.
Just want opinions on 40"-46" (currently on a 37")

Same model, just different screen size?

IMO, no...not worth $300...spend that money on Blu-Ray movies instead or go even higher. Just sit closer to the TV so you can resolve all the detail...I don't think 40 --> 46" is going to make a big difference.

That being said, if you go from 40 --> 60", that changes things...I think 60"+ can make a huge difference. Since you're living in an apartment and don't want a huge home theatre yet, I'd go with the 40" and save some money.

I would say yes it is worth it if those 300 dollars are not going to cause you some sort of significant financial hardship. A tv is something you are going to use for years, and probably enjoy as much if not more then a car, so a few hundred dollars is definitely worth the size increase. 6 inches is a lot in the tv world.

wouldn't bother for 3 more inches. When it comes time to replace our 37", we'll buy a 40" because I think it'll fit in the space we have. But I'm not upgrading early because of it.

I would consider a projector if you're into movies. Things like the panasonic AX100/200 (or 1000/2000 if you want 1080p) will throw a big screen with a pretty short throw. I can get 100" at about 10ft. Also support 1080p/24

Its also ideal for an apartment because you can just put it on a shelf on the back wall of your room - very portable. Then either project onto a blank wall or get a cheap pulldown screen.

Are 1080p projectors getting better? I generally haven't liked the projectors I've seen, as the image looks washed out, but those were also older projectors.

I really want to get a huge screen for my next HDTV, so I'm looking at a quality 1080p projector. I'm sure Blu-Ray looks incredible on it...no reason to go to the theatre anymore.

How much are good 1080p projectors going for? Any new tech on the horizon?

I just started looking and I still think getting a native 1080p projector that supports 24fps is still way too expensive. You can of course get a good projector that accepts 1080p and then converts it to its native res for a good price now, but native 1080p is still way too pricey.

That's what I've thought.

I think I'll wait a few years before taking the plunge on a 1080p projector set. Still content with my 62" HDTV right now.

That wasn't you dropping the "obviously superior technology" line?

I have also looked into 1080p projectors, and it's a huge jump from 1080i in cost. I want to upgrade someday, but probably a few years off.

One serious thing to consider is the ambient light in your place. If you can't make the room very dark, you will suffer from somewhat washed-out colors and hard-to-see blacks. Also, depending on the size of your place, fan noise may be a concern.

Well it was a great weekend as we watched Ratatouille on blu-ray and all of the extras. It really is a gorgeous film and the extras are great! We also watched Corpse Bride and some Planet Earth on HD-DVD.

Today I'm putting in a crapload of orders and preorders on movies. I'm grabbing some of these to watch immediately and some as gifts for the wife this Christmas (if I can hold myself back from just opening them and having at it):

HD-DVD:

Harry Potter set
Stardust
Ocean's Trilogy
Battlestar Galactica
Shrek 3 (for the nephews when they visit)
The Bourne set

Blu-ray:

Spider-Man 3 pack (I know it's already out..just now getting around to buying)
Lost Season 3
Pirates 3

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day

The famous video series will be available on Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Washington, D.C. (November 11, 2007) -- Girls Gone Wild, the video series that displays young women cavorting in public, will be available in High-Definition next month.

Mantra Films says its latest video, Girls Gone Wild: Sexiest Moment Ever 2, will be released on Blu-ray and HD DVD high-def disc on December 11.

Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD edition will retail for $24.95.

Mantra Films, which was started by Joe Francis, who's now serving time in a Las Vegas jail for federal tax evasion charges, says the new video is "the ultimate collection of the wildest and sexiest footage we've ever caught on tape!...

"Girls Gone Wild: Sexiest Moments Ever 2. Sexiest Moments Ever 2 takes you to the hottest beaches, bars, and college dorm rooms for all the naughtiness that you've come to love from Girls Gone Wild!"

It's unclear if Mantra Films used high-def cameras for the filming of Sexiest Moments Ever 2.

Mantra Films and The Girls Gone Wild video series reportedly generates $100 million in sales annually.

Francis, however, has been the target of criminal investigations in several states, including the aforementioned case in Nevada, by local officials concerned about his company filming young women engaging in sexual activities during Spring Break.

is their an advantage with Harry Potter on DVD vs BRD (being Warner and all). I want to get my pre-order in on Amazon (awesome price) but was just curious as to which version to buy. I'm assuming they'll both use the same encode and they both seem to be 10 disc sets, so the question is whether the HDDVD version will do any iHD stuff.

Too early to tell to be honest.
Could very easily use alot of the interactive features on blu that recent releases have also.
Will probably be a week or two before you get final specs.
I am obviously getting them on blu, but I have decided to buy them seperately since we all know there will be two more movies and then another boxed set that holds everything.

I can't stand watching movies on HD-DVD and then jumping over to blu-ray only to lose the awesome interactive menus and such. Given a choice, I'd always take the HD-DVD version unless there was a big price difference.

When are they going to finally sort out the blu-ray interactive issues, anyway?

What movies on HD DVD have these awesome interactive menus? I haven't seen anything on HD DVD yet that seemed significantly different than what I've seen on Blu-ray (PiP aside)...in particular all the Universal releases I've seen so far use the same generic menu template.

Also, the "interactive menu" thing is "sorted" in the sense that every player supports it (BD-J) but some players do better with it than others (the unfortunate cost of being an industry consortium vs. having one company make all the players)

well, I just ordered the HD-DVD versions of HP and Polar Express. Used a 25% off Warner store coupon I haven't seen mentioned in this thread:

NVBM

Gave me 25% off the pre-order as well as the instock item. Free shipping also thanks to HP.

And I agree about the interactive menus on HD-DVD but do like that they are finally starting to pop up more (pun intended) on BRD. It is nice to have full root menu access overlayed on the video from anywhere in the disc. Would be really nice if the BDA mandated it like it seems the DVD consortium has done.

Meh, it's inconsistent and stupid. I use a PS3 as my player and I love the PQ, but little quirks and inconsistencies in the format irk me.

Thanks for the coupon code - I might have to use that to order a gift if it works out much cheaper than Amazon :)

I don't know which discs you guys have been watching but 90% of the movies I have seen on Blu-ray have full root menu access via the pop-up menu. I can't remember the last time I saw a disc (but I do remember a few) that didn't have full pop-up menus to be honest...and every disc I've seen has a pop-up menu (aside from my HQV benchmark disc, but that doesn't really count...)

Really can't beat that WB store deal. I have blade runner and the harry potter set pre-ordered there (2001 arrived on the day of release). Nice choice with Polar Express!

Since I haven't gotten any response over in the thread on the gaming side of things, I'm going to ask it here, since there's a lot of HDTV-owning folks here. (And if I'm going to make this decision, I need to do it pretty quick.) So pardon my interrupting our regular format arguments for a moment.

Thanks to that 20% off coupon for K-mart, I can pick up a 32" 720p Sony Bravia LCD HDTV (model KDL32ML130) for $680 after taxes (TV usually retails for $799 ~ $899).

I really had my eye on a 37"/40", but that's just from looking at them in the store. I'm currently surviving on a 20" SDTV, so the 32" would be a huge upgrade no matter what, and to be honest it's quite possible I'd get a 37"/40" home and decide it's just too big. The TV is going to mostly be used for apartment living, though I'll be moving soon so I don't exactly know my new apartment's situation and what TV size would be best for it.

My initial plan was to wait until after Xmas and after I got settled in to my new place to finally jump into the world of HD, but that seems like a decent price for a decent TV. (My friend picked one up yesterday, and I thought it looked really great, and was a decent size at least in his place.) For any of you who follow the HDTV market closely, is that the kind of price that I should go for at this point? Or, looking at previous price-dropping trends, would I be better off waiting until the beginning of the next year?

Also, anybody have any opinions on 32" vs. 37"/40"? Like I said, I'm running a 20" now, so you know, 32" would be a huge step up for me, and I know TV size preference is completely person. But would those extra 5"/8" make a huge difference?

The one other hesitation that I have is that the unit's contrast is like 2500:1, which sounds like it might be a bit low.

So I used the Kmart 20% off coupon to get me a 80GB Ps3 with Motorstorm. :D

I read about the coupon last night, printed it out, and didn't think it would work at all. They didn't have the actual coupon at the Kmart Pharmacy locally, so I had to hope that the clerk would actually take the coupon. She did. I was torn between an A3 and the Ps3 in terms of price, especially becuase down here EVERYTHING is more expensive. I got $130 off what they charged on the Ps3 and still basically paid MSRP on it. My wife was there, and I thought she'd try to dissuade me, but she supported me, so I paid and I hauled out of there before the clerk asked a store manager or something (they're not supposed to take photocopy/printed coupons like that).

Anyway, I don't have any BR discs yet, they're too expensive down here, but I did load them up on Netflix again and should have some by this weekend. In the meantime, I played around with my new toy, some impressions:

-whoah, this sucker is big

-Menu at 1080p looks great, I can't wait to try some 1080p content on it.

-Motorstorm looked underwhelming, perhaps because it's 720p. The intro looked like Planet Earth, so that was a good start. Plus, it seems fun.

-I like the menu layout, mostly because I'm so used to it with my PsP. Web browsing seems good too. I can't register on PsN until my software update is complete.

-I hope Sony figures out a way to scale ALL content to 1080p like MS, since it just looks better on my tv.

Quick questions:

1. What software do you guys use to stream media to the Ps3?

2. Do the software updates usually take this long? I want to play with it, and it's taking forever to download.

3. When passing the audio through optical, what settings should I use? I selected DTS 5.1 (like on my Xbox HD DVD player), but I'm not sure if I have to tweak it in every game or what it switches to on every game.

Gratz on the aquisition.

1) I just use wmp 11, it does everything with no issue ( even though you are limited to mpegs and mp4 ) as well as music.
( I have over 120gb of music so I ended up getting an external 500 GB drive that I have connected direct to the PS3 also)

2) Software updates are generally a matter of when you are grabbing them.

3) You should not have to tweak it.

Van,

Updates are slow. It's just that way. As for streaming, I don't do it yet, so I'd like to know as well.

Another question I have is that my PS3 audio is REALLY quiet in comparison with my other players for movie playback. I have to crank my system up to get an acceptable level of volume. Does anybody know what's up here? I'm running HDMI to my set and then optical out of my set through my tuner. I'm doing this with my 360 and DVR as well, but they don't suffer from the same problem.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I just downloaded FUPPES for media streaming, but I can't test it out until the update is finished. :(

edit: My 360 already does a fine job of streaming media, but it doesn't do MGPEG 2, so I want to see if my Ps3 can stream it. I record my tv in that format.

http://highdef.homemediaconferences.com/highdefdvd/v42/index.cvn?id=10000

Home Media Magazine presents High-Def 2.0, the one-day event that will serve as a preview of what’s in store for the high-definition disc market in 2008, the year the studios have targeted as breakout time for Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

Coming just weeks before the Consumer Electronics Show, the event will provide a sneak peek of studio announcements expected to be made during CES, along with an overview of plans for the coming years, from marquee titles headed to HD disc to advances in interactivity, technology and packaging.

High-Def 2.0 will include panel discussions, demonstrations, updates on hardware and software sales, exclusive market research, and presentations from the studios about what they have coming up in the fourth quarter.

Also on tap for High-Def 2.0 is the first-ever High-Def Disc Awards. A panel of critics will determine the best entries from each format, from the time the formats were launched, Blu-ray Disc in June 2006 and HD DVD in April 2006.

Could be interesting, though so close to CES it is hard to say if anything will come.
Some seem to think that more will come out of this since at CES it is more about the formats and not so much the studios but I honestly do not remember ces that well :lol

Way to go, Van. Yeah, updates take a long time. Thankfully, they have not been too frequent.

Check out Super Stardust HD from the PSN store to show off the HD-ness of games.

Where do you live that stuff is above MSRP?
