Congrats, Van. The PS3's a pretty slick machine.

Now you can watch any high-def content you want, regardless of red case or blue. No matter who loses, you win! :)

Too early to tell to be honest.
Could very easily use alot of the interactive features on blu that recent releases have also.
Will probably be a week or two before you get final specs.
I am obviously getting them on blu, but I have decided to buy them seperately since we all know there will be two more movies and then another boxed set that holds everything.

That's how I'm getting the harry potter movies, I'm just going to buy them all seperately on blu-ray. The Boxset does not have the individual cases for the movies.

well, I just ordered the HD-DVD versions of HP and Polar Express. Used a 25% off Warner store coupon I haven't seen mentioned in this thread:

NVBM

Gave me 25% off the pre-order as well as the instock item. Free shipping also thanks to HP.

And I agree about the interactive menus on HD-DVD but do like that they are finally starting to pop up more (pun intended) on BRD. It is nice to have full root menu access overlayed on the video from anywhere in the disc. Would be really nice if the BDA mandated it like it seems the DVD consortium has done.

Is this going to be the best deal around for the harry potter movies, or should I wait?

It's a pretty damn good deal. Keep in mind that WHV SUCKS at shipping on time. Expect a month delay on your order. You might get it sooner but don't get your hopes too high.

at ~$16.50 per movie and knowing I won't have to worry about a complete series boxed set until AT LEAST 2009-2010, I am willing to give them an $80 double dip for the final boxed set. Well, technically triple dip after you include 1-4 on DVD.

yeah, I've been reading about WHV store on here. Seems REALLY hit and miss. Hopefully I get it at least sometime in Dec. Would suck if it didn't ship until middle of January. The wife and daughter would NOT be pleased.

My bestbuybusiness.com A3 just arrived (Xmas gift for parents), and they shipped it directly in its own box, and placed the shipping label in the worst possible place - right over the UPC sticker that I need for the 5-free-disc rebate. It seems impossible to peel off the shipping label without destroying the UPC label (I've tried).

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

Remove the cardboard panel and steam it over a pot of boiling water?

I once did that to open a sealed envelope and it worked like a charm. Never tried exactly what you're planning, but I'd imagine the steam would loosen the adhesive without ruining anything.

Maybe somebody else has a better idea.

Try Goo Gone. That takes away any adhesive.

Van, I use TVersity for my media server, it easily allows playback for supported as well as transcoding of any unsuported PS3 media format.

Thanks - the problem is that it's a sticker on a sticker (the UPC code itself is on a sticker, not on the box, and the UPS sticker is on top of the UPC sticker). Apparently people from slickdeals were able to separate the stickers after warming with a blowdryer, but I wasn't able to. I called the rebate people, and they told me to just send the entire box section, UPS sticker and all, so I guess that's what I'll do.

War on BD gets 7.1 PCM & Profile 1.1 PIP features:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...nsgate_Goes_Profile_1.1_with_War_Blu-ray/1164

War's "Behind the Scenes FX Bonus" track, which will make full use of the secondary video decoding capabilities of Profile 1.1-compliant Blu-ray hardware as it guides viewers through the intricacies of the film's special effects.

With 'War,' Lionsgate is now the second Blu-ray studio to announce a Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray title. (Late last month, Fox confirmed plans to issue 'Sunshine' as its first Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray title on January 8.)

In addition to the PIP content on 'War,' other Blu-ray exclusives include the BD-Java-enhanced interactive game "Yakuza Fighter," a "Blu-Line Slider" interface that allows for enhanced scene access, a custom bookmarking function, and what Lionsgate is calling "dynamic resizing" menu navigation.

The Blu-ray edition of 'War' will also carry over all of the standard DVD's supplements, including two audio commentaries with director Philip Atwell and co-screenwriters Lee Anthony Smith & Gregory J. Bradley, a "War Chest" mode that allows for bonus making-of vignettes to be unlocked via seamless branching, a "War Zone" subtitle fact track, "Scoring 'War'" featurette, deleted scenes, a gag reel and the film's original theatrical trailer.

As for tech specs, the Blu-ray will boast 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, along with a full-blown uncompressed PCM 7.1 Surround track (at 48kHz/24-bit) and subtitles in both English and Spanish.

Just picked up 5th element and Layer Cake on Blu-Ray through the BOGO deal. Looking forward to applying the deal to get another title for free (not sure which one I'm gonna get yet though).

Hopefully these transfers are good.

Guys if you buy this movie just to support your format of choice you are part of the problem.

What if we buy it because we like stupid popcorn flicks where a badass English dude goes up against a badass Asian dude and they break out martial arts like George Lucas does on Star Wars movies? :D

QUICK:

I'm watching Spiderman 3 BD and I need to know how to enable surround sound through optical. How do I do that? Right now, I'm getting 2.1ch PCM apparently.

on the ps3? enable optical and chose 5.1, and make sure your receiver is set to either auto or 5.1 mode. Make sure as well your not running the ps3 to the TV, then TV to optical, TVs tend to screw with your audio channels (at least mine does)

Damn, there have been some excellent deals on Blu-Rays lately. Ordered Stranger Than Fiction and Pursuit of Happyness for $26 shipped. :)

I've got a stack of like 10 Blu-Rays sitting on my desk, too.

Updated my A2 to FW 2.7 via an update CD...

...network stuff is STILL not working for me. (I was hopeful because the changelist says that this is one of the issues the update addresses) :(

Edit: Oh, Toshiba...your DHCP implementation sucks balls. It's the only device on my network that didn't configure itself correctly - what was throwing me off is that it ALMOST works...it gets an IP address, but I only just noticed that the gateway was set to 0.0.0.0. I just set everything up manually with a static IP and it is working now.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GS running DD-WRT v23 SP2, if any of you were wondering.

I just got the Transformers thing up and running. Now it takes an extra minute to boot, and the "Intelligence Mode" in the Web enabled extras is...gimmicky? It's like playing a video game, without the actual playing part, with useless stuff cluttering the screen.

Are there any web enabled features worth anything (that is, something that can't be authored onto the disc)? I heard Blood Diamond had online polls or something...so far aside from Transformers all I have is 300, and I have no interest in buying ringtones...

So, it looks like the Rescue Dawn BRD got swept up in MGM's jackassery. On my Netflix que it magically turned into a crusty old dvd (eww!) and it's all but disappeared from Amazon. What the fuck yall? Format war/HD transition bullshit makes Hulk angry!

I just downloaded FUPPES for media streaming, but I can't test it out until the update is finished. :(

edit: My 360 already does a fine job of streaming media, but it doesn't do MGPEG 2, so I want to see if my Ps3 can stream it. I record my tv in that format.

it'll stream mpg files. eg I take MPEG2 HD .ts files, run them through VLC to convert to .mpg (ps as opposed to ts format) and they play fine. Stereo only though.

I just started looking and I still think getting a native 1080p projector that supports 24fps is still way too expensive. You can of course get a good projector that accepts 1080p and then converts it to its native res for a good price now, but native 1080p is still way too pricey.

well most 1080p projectors support 24fps. But yes, they are still a tad too expensive. Plus some of the cheaper ones have worse blacks and contrast/brightness than good 720p ones.

and at a decent size (eg around 100"), you'll be fine with a good 720p one.

Noise isn't an issue if you select carefully. They're down to sub 25dB these days.

and you can mitigate the light issue with a good screen/projector combination. eg grey screen and bright projector if you can't have full light control.

this is what i wanted but i was STILL dissapointed it felt like a REALLY low budget music video. Horribly directed.

meh, I think you've got the wrong approach. Assuming you've already seen the movie, the intelligence stuff is meant to provide fun facts in a cool way throughout the movie. Take the skorponok scene:

-You have the GPS location on the fight
-You have skorponok's life bar, plus info on his weight, his strength, weapon type, etc.
-You have fun facts about the characters, such as the stuff about the phone operator getting a commission for premium packages sold and that he works in bollywood.

The film already has the typical commentary/HDi stuff on it, so this supplement is an additional way to view the movie. I think it's pretty cool, and like I've said before, it makes it easy for multiple viewings.

If you're looking for other movies with cool things, I'd recommend the Universal U-Control movies. Some are mostly just PiP commentary, but some have additional stuff like Children of Men that has the ads that play throughout the movie and the newspaper clippings that you can zoom in on. MI3 also has some cool HDi special features, and the PiP on Batman Begins is pretty entertaining. Overall, you can dismiss all that as gimmicks, but I'm sure audio commentaries were considered gimmicky at one point too. I can't wait to see what studios on both formats can do with this stuff.

Actually, I don't think the A2 update is available for download yet from the web. Sometimes Tosh lags a few days behind the other players, I imagine because that hardware has feature sets that get more benefit from the updates. So, not sure if you're still having connection problems or if the problem is there's simply nothing yet to download.

BTW, Spiderman 3 looked jaw-dropping. Certainly right up there with the best HD DVD's I've seen. A great introduction to the format for me. The detail and color were spectacular. Some questions:

1. Is 1080p/24 the most useless feature ever or did Spiderman 3 not support it? I noticed no difference in panning scenes.

2. Is there any way to download large demos while I'm at work without leaving the console on?

3. There are two options in the settings, one about expanded colors and one dealing with white levels, do you guys enable both?

1. 1080p/24 is the most awesome thing ever. It gives us stoopid PAL folks our smooth pans back. Previously we were lovely and ignorant with the 4% speedup to keep things smooth. But 1080i/60 is pure evil judderiness. If you aren't seeing a difference then you might not have it set up properly.

2. er, no. Magic?

3. ignore them unless you have a PC. They are about how your PS3 sends out its signals, enabling the picture to look correct on eg a PC monitor. Remember the mess with the VGA cable and 360?

1. I'm pretty sure I have it set up properly, and my set supports it, but oh well. I don't see any difference. The more I read about it this morning, the more it seems to be an overrated feature.

2. No, a low power sleep mode like on the Xbox 360.

3. Ok, thanks, I'll turn those off then.

does the 360 download while in idle? Never noticed.

24p is honestly (to me at least) the most important thing after the HD picture and sound. Maybe its less important to you if you're used to NTSC SD DVDs which have judder in anyway?

VanMardigan

Yeah, there was an option added in the last firmware that allows you to turn off the console, and it downloads everything in sleep mode.

That would be very helpful for me, since I want to download a ton of stuff from the PSN store but I don't want to leave my console on all day.

Finally, in Spiderman 3, it seems to load up something at the beginning, any idea what that is?

it's a feature called "Background downloading" i guess. just enable it, click download then Shut Down your 360, it will be working in "low-power mode".

I don't know what set you have, but be wary that most 24p sets these days are faux 24p. They still IVT the signal to 60Hz. A true 24p set will either broadcast at 24p or scale it to a multiple of 24p.

if you have psp, you can use the remote play feature to turn on your ps3, download whatever, and then turn it off again.

Sure, I understand why it exists, and that's all well and good. (I'm not arguing that we shouldn't get extras - they can be entertaining, but the most important thing on the disc to me is the main feature, of course...) What I am asking is why do I have to connect to the internet to download this? (That is, why isn't this just on the disc as opposed to eating up space in my persistent storage, or going away entirely in a few years when Paramount is tired of maintaining the servers) I'm not asking about other HD DVD movies with cool extras, I'm asking if any have used the web enabled features in a fashion that actually justifies their existence.

For those interested, I updated my A2 from here:
http://tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/HD-A2/firmware/HD-A2-2700U.zip

After fixing my gateway settings, my player says "no update is needed" instead of "can not find out server" when I try to update it. (Of course, 2.7 > 2.5 so that doesn't mean the new FW is available for direct download from the player.)

Van (and perhaps others)

These are the correct base settings for your PS3 if your hooked up to a proper HD set and want correct video levels.

Calibrate with these settings:

Output: Y Pb/Cb/ Pr/Cr
RGB Full Range: Limited (this is only on full if you want PC level colors, meant for DVI input)
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super White: On

Y Pb/Cb Pr/CR with super white give you the correct color output without oversaturation and black crush. It also gets rid of a lot of color banding you'd otherwise blame on the movie.
Calibrate it like this with whatever you use.

Also make sure your TV doesn't have an option like 'wide color' or just turn it off.

This is assuming your TV properly accepts Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr of course.

Sony has announced details about Resident Evil Extinction Blu Ray:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...y_with_Resident_Evil:_Extinction_Blu-ray/1165

The movie is stated to feature two game demos, Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil5.
Now it's 99% probable that they mean HD game trailers with game demos but who knows ?!?!

i saw this story earlier and have been looking to see if other sites report that actual demos are going to be on the disk.

i could understand the dmc4 demo being on the disk since the game is coming out in feb but re5 is no where near ready (i think).

my guess would be it has the dmc 4 demo like the pre-order bonus games such as turok and R&C and a new trailer for RE5.
