Yes, and if PS3 can successfully bridge the gap to affordable BD players before HD DVD makes any more substantial gains, then that bodes well for them.

Except full-spec, affordable BD players are still a ways off and that could pose a problem.

And BOGOs condition buyers to confine their purchases to sales. In business, that's not a good trap to fall into.

It's going to be interesting to see what Warner does next year if Toshiba is able to install a significant number of players, assuming those players provide studios a solid base of movie buyers.

Full spec are not a way off, they are hitting by the end of the year ( if I am not mistaken I can't search while at work)

I do fully agree about the BOGO sales though. while the first time or two was a great idea too much too soon will cause issues and can hurt more than help ( much like I say the 99 sale can hurt sale of normal prices players.)
I say with the latest one they are pushing the line a little.
It would be better for them to just change the price of the ones that are always in the bogo to a discount price from now on.

The first 1.1 standalone would be the Samsung dual format if I'm not mistaken. That's in December, though it won't "officially" be 1.1 until they upgrade the firmware in January. It'll be interesting to see what the baseline price for 1.1 players will be.

The Panasonic DMPBD30K is 1.1, was released a couple weeks ago I believe, and is $499.

EDIT: Looks like new release date is Dec. 1

Define "affordable" and "a ways off" and also please give me the number of your psychic, so I can get me some lottery numbers.

Also, if 20% of PS3 owners can cause the massive software imbalance we have now despite relative parity of standalones (with a recent surge by HD-DVD), how is expanding that a bad thing? One BOGO deal or two, and suddenly Joe Gamer has a few movies and a habit for more. Seems ingenous to me. Meanwhile, standalone sales continue to grow, without resorting to dumping. That's a healthy way to grow a market.

5/5 PQ
Man, I'm getting really spoiled. Only just last week, I had the pleasure to review two CGI animated titles, 'Cars' and 'Ratatouille,' both from Pixar and both boasting what I thought were absolute five-star transfers. Although I still think that the Pixar team is untouchable in terms of the visual wit and stylistic brilliance they bring to their best animated features, 'Shrek the Third' on HD DVD proves that no one studio has a monopoly on fantastic high-def video presentations -- 'Shrek the Third' looks every bit as good as the best animated titles I've seen on either next-gen format.

4/5 AQ
All of the 'Shrek' films are lively sonic affairs, with plenty of discrete effects to go along with all the zany action on the screen. Activity in the rear channels is almost constant, with nice directionality to the mix, well-done panning and a good deal of bleed to the score. Atmosphere is also nicely sustained during the few quieter bits, with everything from minute drops of rain to wind in the trees subtle but noticeable in the surrounds.

Seems he basically just wanted a TrueHD track. HD DVD extras seem cool too.

they are 100% right without question. It would provide no overall value to the market whatsoever BECAUSE no other studio is interested in releasing content in both formats. The only hope at this point for electronics consumers outside of gaming consoles is dual format players. Heck, I would argue that the only hope for mass expansion overall in this market is dual format players combined with identical versions from studios who release for both formats. Make the format irrelevant, mix the sections in the stores once the majority of players going out the door are dual format, and you will quickly see this war end on its own.

He also wanted the movie to be better. ;)

Yeah, all it needs is a TrueHD track though.

What does his movie score have to do with anything? The TrueHD track was in reference to his AQ score.

I take Warner at face value about TotalHD,including the idea that they weren't looking to make a lot of momoney from it. I think they're genuinely interested in expanding the market, and TotalHD was their attempt to end-run the format war.

I definitely DEFINITELY give them credit for that. Unfortunately as the only studio doing it, the effort while genuine would have been useless and ended up costing them more than it helped either them or the war.

Really it's up to the CE manufacturers. I think once it's viable to build a fully compliant dual format machine and sell it for under $400, you are going to see sales ramp up not unlike the second and third years of DVDs. The politics are affecting sales and the relative lack of sales are slowing down the reduction in cost of manufacturing. getting rid of the politics (or at least making them not matter) will speed up this whole process. I understand most of you were hoping for one side to win, but at this point that is looking like an impossibility.

While it's true that most people think their DVDS are "good enough", most (including analysts) forget that DVD boomed on the back of NEW releases, not catalog releases. It was movies like Matrix and Godzilla that propelled DVD, not Jurassic Park or Aliens. End the format war enough (or make it look that way) to carry new releases and eventually people WILL move over to HD, if only for new releases. After they have enough new release HD under their belt, it's at that point that they will be eager to replace their favorite catalog titles with brand new HD versions of them.

Just a little joke, sheesh.

I already know what was missing for it to be a 5/5 AQ.

Picked up Ratatouille and Meet the Robinsons on BD today for my daughter's Christmas present. :D

Also picked up The Prestige and Primeval BD 2 for 1 for me. Future Shop has all the "Buy a Blu-ray player get 5 free movies" titles on sale, buy 1 get 1 free.

This could be a good sign.
I have always believed that one of the reasons Warner was dragging it's feet about picking a side was that they were hoping that the TOTALHD format would be viable enough to sell to other studios.
Them shelving it can mean that they are close to ready to pick a side and end this.

Yep. Hopefully this is a good sign that warner is going to make a switch after the holiday season is over.

I'm not saying it won't happen but saying that the shelving of total hd is sign of them going blu ray is a bit of a stretch. Woldn't you say hans? What I want to is whether Warner's bda license really expired and what it means if anything.

You do realize that's the Japanese release, right? No English subtitles or audio track. And it's $70 or so.

Sony has the rights in North America, and this rumor has been floating around for a while now. I'm sure we'll see it soon.

Sure, and I'm not implying that.

What it is saying, however, is that they're not confident in establishing the support for BOTH formats by offering a THIRD.

It seems to me that Warner does, indeed, want a one format future.

Has the no english subs been confirmed?

Was wondering about the .hack/gu release also.
Price is not a problem, I paid 80 for Ghost in the Shell and also 80 for ghost in the shell : Innocence and both had english subs.

The Bourne HD-DVD Trilogy is down to $49.95 on Amazon. Pretty good price for three movies.

Kick ass deal! I just got a $25 gift certificate for Amazon from my Amazon card rewards.. plus I should be getting the 10% off deal as well although it isn't being applied yet. It'll be about $20 once it gets fixed, woo.

The Renton, WA (Seattle) Fry's is having a B1G1 sale on Blu-rays this weekend. Fox and Sony titles are included this time. In the ad, they show 28 Weeks Later, Eragon, Mr Brooks, Fantastic Four, Day After Tomorrow, Night at the Museum. There will be 30 titles to choose from, apparently.

Man, I hope my local Fry's does the same thing. I suspect they will. I really want Day After.

I'm predicting another BOGO sale from Disney and/or Sony when Bourne hits the stores.:D

I don't think so to be honest.
The bogos are more of a fuck you to Paramount, so I do not think that Bourne will have one.

Columbia Tristar (Sony) has the rights to the Cowboy Bebop movie, good news for me, but I'd love to see any anime series hitting HD, please.

Also, that Bourne deal is amazing, but no HD-DVD over here =(
