So.. I know I'm missing something. Why doesn't HD DVD have BOGO sales like Blu-ray again?

They've got to make money somewhere to recoup for all those losses on their subsidized player costs.

btw, is anyone like me in that, before HD, I didn't really buy many movies?

I always felt that DVD quality was shit, and it didn't really live up to my expectations for a home theatre...

But now Blu-Ray does, and I'm buying a ton more movies than I have in the past because of it.

I have I think around 30 DVDs, most of them are the huge titles and include stuff like Band of Brothers, Batman TAS series, the Godfather trilogy. Also some personal favourites like Midnight Express, Se7en, stuff like that. My Blu-Ray collection is around 20 now.

I didn't think DVD was shit, I just didn't know any better. I was so definitely not a Tuesday buyer which I am now if titles I like come out on a given Tuesday. HD seems adequate now, but of course many of us thought the same about DVD 5 years ago. If the biggest television someone is going to get is on average 50-60", I hope that 1080p is good enough.

No. I had around 300 dvds and thought they all looked fantastic, even on my projector at 100".

Then i bought a hd-dvd player. THEN i realised that they looked like shit and sold most of them and started from scratch.

Uh-oh, Ocean's Thirteen PQ is apparently not up to snuff:

'Ocean's 13' hits both HD DVD and Blu-ray with identical encodes. Unfortunately, while I'm quite sure the look of this 1080p/VC-1 transfer reflects Soderbergh's directorial intentions, a series of glaring color discrepancies, heavy noise, and rough detail conspire to make this something less than a high-def demo disc.

How about Ocean's 11's PQ? Thats the only one I care to own, and Im certain that sooner or later they will break up that set and sell them individually (much like the S-M trilogy on BRD, just a matter of time).

DVD looked outstanding when it came out, much better than VHS and it had dolby Digital sound, that was the biggest upgrade imo.
The upgrade in sound made it possible to get a theater experience in your own room. I remember seeing the Matrix for the first time at home with DD 5.1 it was a awesome experience.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are smaller upgrades for DVD imo, the difference between VHS and DVD was much bigger, for the first time you had menu's, ability to skip and fast forward really fast, numerous subtitles, digital clean picture quality.

I agree. The best thing about both HDM formats is the resolution. Other than that its basicaly a wash to the normal person. not to mention its still on disc. Which may be why neither catch on the way that we all hope. You wouldn't beleive how many people I hear say that DVD is good enough. It really gets to me, but I know that most average people feel this way.

I agree along with the high $$$ of the movies even though alot of people here like saying its the 2 formats that are putting people off. Don't get me wrong I think the 2 formats are putting some off but to much small degree not nearly what people here make it out to be.

I refuse to go back to dvd. On my 30", dvd looked good, though HD was still clearly better. I have a 57" tv now, and dvd looks like crap. I'm not kidding, it's unacceptable to me. The Ps3 does a good job of upscaling, but the lack of detail and the compression artifacts are far too obvious. I'm past the point of no return on dvd's, and I doubt I'll be going smaller in terms of displays. My next one will likely be a 1080p projector.

btw, I was thinking of doing an upscaling comparison between Ps3 and Xbox 360 HDMI at 1080p. Would anyone be interested in seeing that?

There's no way I can buy another DVD... not that I bought many to begin with.

But the whole concept that, this is as good as 2D film media is going to get for a consumer format makes me say; yes! This shit is worth it!

And it will be the last of the 2D media formats; when you think about the amount of trouble it takes for the industry to do a unilateral upgrade of resolution... and when you think about the diminishing returns of increased resolution passed this point... then there can be no doubt; the next step beyond HD is 3D.

And efforts to convert 2D media to 3D will always be gimmicky; it's an extrapolation of data, even when performed from the studio side.

Very much so. I'm also curious if there is any upscale difference in the 360 drive vs the HD DVD add on for dvds.

I can do that as well, though I doubt it, since the processing in both cases is done by the 360.

First tragedy, then farce.
i bought the aviator, it looks fantastic in HD.

The early scenes with the wacky color the make it look like an early technicolor picture especially.

van, i wouldn't bother. The ps3 will kick the 360's arse.

Several people on a good av site whose opinions i trust, say that - since the software was updated for dvd upscaling, the ps3 is one of the best upscaling players out there.

I don't have any experience with upscaling dvd players outside of the two consoles, so I can't say whether or not the Ps3 is one of the best, but it definitely seems better to me than the 360 at upscaling. Regardless, posting some shots should be fun. People's opinions mean nothing to me since I have both physically at my house with a nice tv to boot. I don't need to read it on a forum or take anybody's word for it. I plan on doing a direct comparison anyway and just wanted to know if folks wanted me to post some shots here or not.

For a console, the PS3 is a good scaler, but I wouldn't call it one of the best, the HD-AX2 just destroys it.
Most experts have called it one of the best.

Didn't it get a 97/100 on some specific DVD test?

Of course though, players with HQV chips in them do a better job.

I just rented Ocean's 13 (BD) last night and it was a really spotty transfer. On one hand, the colours in certain scenes really popped out, especially when looking at cityscapes. However, the amount of noise was ridiculous, especially when looking at the sky and black levels. I thought the style may have been Soderbergh's intentions, but I was disappointed overall.

No offense but main event is now on the ignore list.
Someone tell me if he actually starts taking part in the discussions at all instead of just posting random link crap.

Sweet Fox is having a BD sale! Damn I really want 28 weeks later but I think I'll just leave it on my wish list as a stocking stuffer. Maybe I'll forward the info to friends. :)

Yep, now it's a matter of how quickly Toshiba can get the yields up to snuff and how they'll update their current players to be compatible.

Basically all Fox titles are B1G1 (or half off since that's the way Frys does it)

So I'm picking up a few from above, as well as The FLY!!!!

Nah actually very small, i like different opinions.
I like links I like information but I can not stand people who pop in once every couple of days, drop some kind of link or news story in their favor and then take off.
At least take part in the discussion or something you know?
Be as biased as you want I don't care but do not come off like some kind of half assed viral marketer.

yup samething on the hd dvd side, it was pretty average. But the movie is shit so it shouldn't bother.

Not really about HD, but since it's come up...

I really *liked* Ocean's 12, while people blasted it. Is Ocean's 13 more of the same, or worse than 12?

In their favor? So I think you have a bigger problem with people that chooses sides, or FANBOYISM, if you will...

I am having a hard time following the discussion here quite frankly, since it's a mega-thread and everything evolves rapidly and I have a life to attend to. I keep coming back hoping to see the end of the war, but it's not going to happen anytime soon!

I liked it too, but I had to watch it a second time before I did.

I just took one of my occasional trips over to the other side of the forum, and I see the PS3 price-drop has been met with a big sales jump. If the "20% Rule" (about what percentage of PS3s contribute to BluRay sales) stays in effect, that ought to mean some big numbers for BluRay over the next couple of months. Sales of 100K a week would mean a lot of new BluRay watchers, if indeed people picking up a system now end up watching movies on it. The SM3 pack-in was a smart move, if only from an awareness perspective.

Thank god they finally dropped the price below $500.

You can use the google check out to shave another ten or so off.
For the sake of full disclosuer though I will say there is still no word from samsung on whether it will be able to be upped to 1.1

Also qualifies for Samsung love http://product.samsung.com/blurayoffer/

2 Warner movies + Planet Earth + the 5 free
Pretty good price actually!
You can playback DTS-HD MA audio tracks with that baby.

It also looks like circuit city is doing a buy 2 get 1 in this sundays ad for Blu and HD... may possibly be like the last one where it works on almost anything.
