But the movie theater plays back in DD at at a rate lower than 324kbps.

Something like that.

I saw it on Imax. That's full PCM.

I'll look into that. I have the XA2, but it's dead, so I'm using the A30. I just updated to the latest ISO firmware, 1.3 I think.

Danke.

If LFDH sold 100K, then that means that the lower-listed sellers are actuallt selling quite well-- ie, HD media sales are picking up. Very respectible for a lot of those, considering they aren't new.

these charts make it seem like transformers is the only movie hd dvd owners are buying. without paramount/dreamworks, hd dvd wouldnt be on the chart at all

Apparently, DH4 numbers were greatly exaggerated.
Might be less than 50K

And Dave Vaughan (Editor of a HT mag that gets Nielsen unit sales numbers) went into slightly greater detail on LFODH. Apparently actual sales of the standalone disc and boxset combined were significantly less than 50k.

Combine that with the fact that he also said Open Season doubled its SI sales on Black Friday, we can figure out a few other things. First, sales of LFODH on its own were probably very close to 43k. Second, 21-22k 40GB PS3s were sold at Best Buy on BF.

Which was pretty much expected, given the box office winners of the year.

Re: the Free Open season stuff. Very possible. But Transformers was given away as well. I got my Transformers copy free when I bought my A30 from Best Buy. The HD DVD group has been giving away free movies long before Blu-ray did, so it's all about balance.

Anyone notice this ad in the nextbook mag?

When I first saw it on a different forums, I thought it was user made. I lol'd when I found out it was in the magazine.

It's only going to get worse for HD DVD for the rest of this year.

But then you'd just have the same problem, but in reverse - 2.40:1 movies would fill up your screen, but then any 4:3, 16:9, or 1.85:1 content you watch would result in crazy vertical bars. There is no escaping this "problem" (I say it with quotations because frankly it has never bothered me), unless we start getting TVs that do what movie theatre screen do, and physical alter the size of the screen for the given ratio (it seems to me that moist theatre screens are 1.85:1 by default, and when a movie of say, 2.40:1 is shown, the black bars are physically moved into place; pay attention next time youre at the movies, you can notice it happening).

yes I know about all that as I currently am a projectionist. but still I wish to see the movie like I originally saw it in theatres and that day will come in the near future. Also I believe someone else mention that adjustable tv screens size will come out in the near future, I hope those things adjust the picture and screen size automatically otherwise it'll be a clusterfuck for the average consumer.

There's black bars in the movie theater too......

Aren't they just obscured by the total darkness and curtains?

Notice how some of the HDDVD supporters/anti blu-ray supporters are no where to be found.

Good on Blu-ray for gaining a SI point. More important IMO.

But I thought Transformers was supposed to turn the tides?!

Kinda creepy how this mimics some other hardware battle we got going on... Except the roles are reversed.

I mostly lurk, but I'm an HD-DVD fan. Cheap player ($100) and movies I enjoy in HD = me not really caring if Blu-ray wins. I'll still have those movies and I'll still have the player. People around here talk about HD-DVD fans like their is something wrong with them when they buy HD-DVD's. Both formats are pretty much of equal quality. One just sells better than the other, and until Sony lowers their ridiculous prices on players I'm not biting :p.

What could really stop the war would be if Sony made an affordable player, then most HD-DVD people would probably go multi-platform and thus probably cause the war to be over because Blu-ray sales would crush HD-DVD. However, Sony's stubborn, they need to push their videogame sys.......oh wait I meant Blu-ray player somehow right?

Call me crazy, but I don't think it's a good sign for HD media when the number 1 selling title in Thanksgiving/BF week sells 43k units. Holy shit, that's bad. I recognized Open Season from the Best Buy BF deal, and I'm astonished that it was enough to push it to number 2 on the charts. Yeah, this is much worse for HD DVD, but sheesh, these numbers are fucking horrible. They are low enough that one of those nutball "buy days" could actually make a difference.

I would have gone dual format yesterday if I'd known about the $179 refurb deal on a BRD player at the Philips site.

I'd buy a $149 PS3 with no HDD, couldn't play games, but play BRDs. :D

see when the film is being projected on screen, it has to go through an aperture plate so it could fit in the screen size that is being displayed at. the curtains and "black bars" (masking) pretty much just hides the leftover of the image. (if you ever pay attention, check out the very edge of the screens when watching a movie. plus is more noticeable on 1.85.1 films). but what I'm gettin at is the average consumer cannot tell when a 2.40:1 is being improperly displayed through an 1.85:1 lens. if those adjustable tv's doesn't automatically adjust the lens, screen size and all and you have to do this manaully, then it is a clusterfuck.

Yeah that would be a no-brainer at this point for me too. I'm only a college student at this point, I'm not mister money bags so I can't really afford a 400 dollar blu-ray player. However get it down to 200 or 150 and then we're talking.

Of course they have to push the PlayStation 3. If Sony released a cheap Blu-ray player they would not only completely lose one of the PS3's biggest features as a draw, but then all the other Blu-ray player manufacturers would be absolutely pissed off because Sony undercut them so hard that they either have to take massive losses or just not sell any players. Player prices are exactly where they need to be for a young format... the only reason HD DVD players have been so affordable is because Toshiba has dropped the price so low as a desperation move to grab more install base and, they were hoping, software sales. Don't think that it was for the consumer's sake for an instant.

Well, your money should go towards tuition and cost of living. Not HD movies. So it makes sense.

Have you read this article regarding screen formats?

come on CES, don't let us down now.

Just curious, besides Warner's announcement, what else are you guys expecting to happen at CES?

Did Warner definitely say they were making a decision one way or the other at CES?

Nah. I expect nothing at CES really. Sure would be great if something did happen, but...

Yup same here man, I would jump to the neutral boat, but nope! I need a cheapo BD player to enjoy my high def movies! Between Universal and WB I'm good for now. I'm a HD DVD supporter, but if I had the means I would be neutral by now. Oh well, maybe sometime next year once dedicated BD players are cheaper.

CES is in January, right? that might be a good time for an announcement by someone. Who knows, Warner did say they were going to evaluate this quarter and said quarter ends just a few days prior to the show.
