so how long is paramount in this exclusive deal?

18 Months.

They have get out clauses though. Spielberg films are a lock down to, if they are ever released they will be dual-format.

When Warner and Paramount left HD-DVD exclusivity back in 2005, Paramount pre-empted the Warner announcement after finding out Parsons wanted to be on the BDA. They do tend to follow what Warner will do. I'd guess they'd make their next decision based on what Warner do.

All eyes on Warner.

I didn't follow HD media very closely in the last weeks so why exactly is everyone waiting for Warner to do something?

Warner is the last major format neutral studio and they have a substantial catalog.

I think if Warner were to go HD DVD exclusive, it would probably stalemate both formats (either dual format players and/or a small niche market would be the result), and if they went Blu-ray exclusive it would end the format war, which I think would be the best outcome for everyone.

Mainly because if Warner picks a side it can in theory end this whole thing.
Warner on one hand has said that they have no plans to stop supporting both, but in other statements have said that they will soon have to make a decision.
So it is kind of a hear say mess.

I would say choosing Blu would probably end it pretty quickly.. but if they would go HD-DVD the split would become something like 50/50, extending this shit even longer.

So nothing that is really concrete. That's disappointing I would love to see a final showdown with some real decision making.

If they went red I believe that you would say a sizable increase in those that go purple as it were.
No end, but essentially giving up on ever having one winner.
If they go blu it would have a very strong chance of finally ending this mess because it is believed by many that Weinstein will go where Warner goes and when Paramount's deal ends they would definitely at minimum go neutral again.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is here :D Quick impressions are that it looks good (more detail and a DEFINITE improvement in colours and the general vivid-ness of everything) and sounds pretty good too (DTS HD and TrueHD on every version of the film!)

more than that IMO. If Warner went bluray exclusive and the numbers started looking really bad for HDDVD, I'd hope Paramount would have a suitable exit clause from their deal and for them to switch just as quickly as they did this time round.

Thanks! I wonder if it's in store also?

Robocop!

It is here. And the price cards all say "Good until 12/25"

Went to a Best Buy today, and the Blu side of the aisle now wraps around into the next aisle over :O

Crouching Tiger, Fight Club, and Lola (sorta) interest me.

I really hope Crouching Tiger got the good treatment.

coming soon titles from fox and mgm are laughable at best :lol

on the topic of blu rays players, id like to vent my anger towards sony for dropping the ball on dts-hd support, every new player has bitstream capability now and for them to not at least include bitstreaming is a joke. i want to buy another player for my theater since im ordering the denon 3808CI, but the samsung 1400 isnt 1.1 nad thats the best deal out there. im hoping the samsung 5000 dual player that releases in mid january will at least support the bistreaming of HBR codecs but jesus this is getting ridiculous

As Sony's flagship player the PS3 should be at least a 1.1 player with the ability to decode on board DTS-HD master audio. if the cell prcessor cant do it, id hate to see how expensive standalones that can will be.there is no excuse f seeing as how fox has supported this codec since day one

ps. fight club makes me moist in the pants

Get yourself the Panasonic BD30. 1.1 compliant and True HD and DTS MA bitstream to the 3808 (very nice receiver).

I'll tell you why the PS3 isn't 1.1 compliant yet.
Because Sony likely has an agreement with other player manufacturers to delay the update, so they can sell stanalones.

yeah i was looking at that , but im kinda of more hoping to get a player that will internally decode as well since i have a 2807 also. ideally id like for the ps3 to get internal decoding so i can just snag a 40 gig. one in the theater and one up stairs, i figure for the cost i might as well get another game player as well as sacd support.

im just saying with the computatinal power the ps3 offers, its a no brainer for onboard decoding . i could care less about analog out since i have two hdmi receivers.

the samsung dual player looks quite promising though, so ill just play it by ear until multiple user reviews com in and it gets firmware updated

2.0 was a perfect opportunity for sony to really impress me and i felt let down as everything implemented revolved around gaming. the ps3 is no longer the best blu ray player on the market, sure its the best overall package, but dts-hd is a huge deal for alot of people myself included

Please Warner go blue... make this shit end. Fuck this format war. It's no fun for the consumers.

its plenty fun for me, i just picked up a couple hundred dollar players , which would have been nowhere in sight had there not been this so called war.

appearantly you werent an early adopter of dvd or youd know how expensive both players and media were

any format will be dated with time, you buy movies to watch and enjoy, not to be a fanboy. im sure in 10 years dvd will be as dead as vhs is now

I'll tell you, there are very few people on this forum more obsessed with audio than I am. Hell, I'm probably the only one here with separates - 7 Outlaw M2200 monoblocks. LOL! $2500 for just the power section. I'm crazy!

And while DTS HD is excellent, I'm content with DTS 1.5 core. Because I know when the time comes, my disc with DTS MA isn't going anywhere. Plus, it's fun to revisit movies and hear things you didn't notice before.

The one I really want to hear is Kingdom of Heaven. I felt the DTS 1.5 was great. I can imagine the final battle in 24bit lossless.

Didn't they drop sacd support from the 40 gig?? One of the reasons I bit the bullet and picked up an 80GB Ps3 was my fear of them continually stripping features to get the price down. A necessity for them, but sucks for me.

As far as profile 2.0, isn't that web enabled support? No reason why the Ps3 shouldn't be able to do it, considering how even the low end HD DVD players support it.

edit:

speaking of which, I'm willing to try out an sacd. I never bothered with either dvda/sacd, but now that I have a player by default, I'd love to try it out. Can the audio be passed through optical? What are my requirements on the receiver end? Is sacd really a big step up, even from well done concert dvd's in DD 5.1?

I'm glad to not have bought Fight Club on DVD, cause I can buy it on bluray now without feeling guilty for buying a movie I already have :)

the s.e. has an amazing cover--one of the best ever--which was made out of cardboard and the art on that thing was awesome. i cherish it to this day. but yeah, i'll probably rebuy it. :(

has calmed down a bit.
These past 4 weeks seem to have been the worst ones (in terms of ratio) since February for HD DVD, just from glancing at that. It's had some dips and such, but it seems like the last time the ratio held that low for 4 weeks was February.

B1: yes. yes they did. :(
B2: just go here: http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html

As for sound, the SACD's that I have do sound really really good but I can only notice the difference in either 5.1 or 2-channel with headphones. Results will vary, of course, and it depends on the disc you're using.

Isn't Open season being given away with PS3's? Though even without it being counted I bet it would have been another 2 to 1.

Anyone know how much Battlestar Galactica S1 is going to be in stores? BestBuy.com is listing it at MSRP and I don't feel like ordering it from Amazon.

Fight Club and Crouching tiger on blu-ray, hell yes. I hope Fight club include everything that was on the 2 disc dvd set on blu-ray.

oh shit i didnt know sacd playback was cut from the 40 gig, that sucks but i really only need one player so id probably still get the 40 gig as long as nothing movie wise is gimped

optical wont work, must be hdmi. id recommend dark side of the moon as your first disk. its a step up from 2 channel music, but id say its on par with good concert dvds, but then again you dont have crowd noise and its cut in a studio

receivers are to the point now in which pre/pros are not really necessary

not really...Seperates are lacking on the *Audio Formats upgrades*...but they have a much higher quality of power to each channel. Receivers 130 watts is nothing like an Amplifers..

sooperkool said:
maybe not necessary but good seperates allow you to focus individua components for better sound overall.
thats highly debatable

if you need more than 130 watts per channel there is a problem, at that point good sounding and clarity shouldnt be a concern :lol

as audiophiles isn't everything debatable... :lol

Like I always say to my friends, "if it sounds good to you then thats all that matters".

well i just went out and bought Transformers HD DVD but i honestly dont know how this format will survive.

some fatass guy there was buying 4 or 5 blurays for his PS3 which made me hesitant about my purchase. add to that the fact that my stupid cousins mentioned Bluray first when asked about HD movies, plus a girl at school did the same, it just seems HD DVD is not gonna win this.

while at bestbuy getting my movie a guy was buying an HD A2 i believe, so thats good.
