I started the import fury and I wish I hadn't. It was an honest question that I knew would turn into a stupid flame war, but whatever.

There is no flame war, those that turn it into one ignore them.
Imports are good for movie lovers.

Thanks for the link. Would you happen to know what other Chinese movies are on Bluray? The site doesn't seem to have a bluray section.

You will see more coming soon as I believe Dragon Dynasty and others are starting to release on blu.
Right now Infernal and Flashpoint are the only chinese imports that I am aware of.

Isn't Dragon Dynasty owned by Weinstein, which is (or at least was last I heard) in the HD-DVD camp?

Blu-ray exclusive in US as it's Miramax, but I doubt it'll come.

i thought weinstein now owns miramax

nevermind, they left miramax but took diminsion. however several hddvd exclusives have the miramax logo, thus my confusion.

such a confusing split up

No country for old men is BD in the us, and it will be hd outside of the us.
2/26/08 is the rumored release date ( which sounds kind of close but who knows)

Never heard or watched Flashpoint before. Is it any good?

it doesn't list "the whole Bloody Affair" though:( I'll be buying a ps3 next year anyways.

disney doesnt own the whole bloody affair.. weinstein does, which makes it hddvd exclusive, if they actually released movies still.

Mm, was disappointed to find that Miramax has distribution rights in the US despite the tantalizing Paramount Vantage logo that came on at the start. Sucks that I'll probably have to pay upwards of $40 to get the import, but such is life. At least HD-DVD has dibs on There Will Be Blood. :)

LOL Import movies lol.

I imported The Prestige for HD.:D :lol
But seriously though, most people don't import and give a shit.

Importing due to 'region free FTW' and different distributors overseas was one of HDDVDs big things that fans used to trumpet about, how they get around bluray exclusivity because of that blah blah.

I have starship troopers and face/off from the UK. Would be very interested in Children of Men and 12 monkeys, but I'm always cautious when smaller companies have releases, as the quality can be variable. And reviews are difficult to come by. Anyone got any links to reviews of these?

12 Monkey is out in Germany by Concorde, not exactly a small company over here. They have the rights to alot of major movies. I just went to their website and they have the right to Iron Man, so far for it being HD DVD exclusive. :lol

Anyone pick up Bladerunner today? It's out on Blu-ray in Europe.

and it'll be region free because its warner.

I'm trying desparately to wait as I have a preorder for the US version. In the UK, its only a 2-disc edition, not the 5-disc set out in the US. Still has the same final cut though.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I think Toshiba should've pandered on the region coding thing, if indeed that was a reason some studios chose Blu Ray. Most companies don't even bother to do it on Blu Ray, and the few who do, let them just go ahead and do it if that's their way of doing business. It's just such a silly point anyway, and it's unfortunate for the folks who do like to import frequently, but look at New Line's stance, where the HD DVD releases are being delayed because of the region coding. That sucks for HD DVD only owners.

The others are in standard-def, aren't they? I'm not that fussed about that, to be perfectly honest, although the US one is still probably cheaper than the £25 UK version.

Anyway, I'll grab it on the way home tonight.

Not sure about 12 Monkeys.
How can I tell something like that for a future reference? On that website it says "Region B". I thought all US releases and players are region A?

It sucks that the studios do it, but i honestly didn't know how delayed worldwide theatrical releases can be. It makes sense that you wouldn't want DVDs of Batman Begins playable worldwide if it hasn't been to Japanese theaters yet.

Except for some anime and fairly obscure films, I don't think region coding affects many people (or maybe i'm showing my ignorance here...) and it'll be a tiny issue once the format war is over.

This isn't about hdm but I think I will ask it anyway. My parents want to get a surround sound system and they are asking me for help. They plan on getting a blu-ray player eventually so what would be a good model that would be able to except many of the blu-ray codecs? A recommendation on a good set of speakers would be appreciated as well.

Well, Saturday night my brother picked up the Toshiba A30 from Best Buy with the ten free movies deal. It was pretty interesting, because Best Buy is pretty pro-Blu with their displays and placement, but both sales reps actually recommended HD-DVD first over Blu-ray.

Does anybody know if BB is pushing HD-DVD specifically right now for any reason despite the store layouts?

Anyway, I've got about $340 worth of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs coming from Amazon just before the holidays. I also just picked up Shrek the Third and should be able to watch it tonight (never seen it before). From what I understand the movie is kinda lame, but the imagery is awesome.

I don't think so. I think it's pretty much salesperson bias, much like when you hear a clerk at Gamestop slamming a particular system for whatever reason.

BB "pushing hd-dvd" :lol
Their Magnolia home theater pushes blu heavily, all stores down here anyway have a larger blu section , they also have a nice bravia display showing trailers with more blu movie facings on it.
Their ad has Pirates plastered all over it for dvd and blu.
But they are pushing hd... lol.

Sales reps have their bias just like everyone else and will push what they feel like pushing.

Well, that's why I thought it was odd. BB has always been Blu heavy, so I was kinda shocked to see two separate salesmen recommend it, and they used almost the exact same pitch. It was probably a couple of employees that are friends or something that each went red a while back or something.

My Best Buy has two TVs displaying BluRay and two TVs displaying HD DVD

their BluRay selection takes a full isle and their HD DVD selection takes a full isle

id go with some paradigm monitors (best speakers you can buy for the money), probably 7 or 9s, ge with their bipolar surrounds and a decent center channel. pick up a a velodyne sub probably a 10 inch depending on the size of the room. id go with the onkyo 805 or higher or a denon, like the 2808 CI. you dont want the 605 despite its cost since it wont matrix lpcm into 7.1. if your only shooting for a 5.1 setup then it would be fine. also the 2808ci only has 2 hdmi ins, so that may be a factor you need to consider.

Also Amazon just e-mailed me that the Bourne deal they were running for all 3 movies at 50% when #3 comes out on HD-DVD has been delayed until mid-January for shipping. Did #3 get delayed or is Amazon just being out of stock like always lately?

Mine has an estimated Arrival Date of December 17-18 now so it might be a stock issue. I did get a delay email though like you.

Also, if Blade Runner is out in Europe today.. why isn't it in the US? Mine is going to miss Christmas because of it. Lame-o!

So you can do a 5.1 setup with the onkyo 605 despite it being a 7.1 system? I don't think my parents want more than a 5.1 system.

Where's a good place to pick up Paradigm 7's? (cheapest :) )

Don#t buy the the stupid Euro version with only 2 discs. You can import the US one with 5 discs and it ends up even cheaper. I already pre-ordered mine from amazon.com I don't care if I have to wait 2 more weeks.
