For the record 76/24

No title sold over 100K this week. In fact, according to the VS numbers, Transformers didn't sell that many, SP3 didn't sell that many and DH4 didn't sell that many. The VS numbers don't count all outlets nor does it account for sales to rental outlets, so while I'm very confident that all of the titles listed above sold over 100K copies in their firest week, they include all sales and not just the VS sales data.

Good numbers. I was hoping for a knockout 80/20 but still not bad.

How in the HELL does Planet Earth outsell Transformers on HD DVD? Me thinks there's a boatload of illiterate Moms and Pops buying the HD version thinking "Nature will look HD" on our 27 inch tv.

Because Planet Earth is good and Transfers is shit in a box.

So I'm 3 episodes into the Lost set...

Absolutely stunning PQ and sound. I'd totally recommend this. It's making me fall in love with Lost all over again.

I would buy Planet Earth and Transformers, but Planet Earth comes first. If you're questioning Planet Earth versus Transformers then you need to check yoself fool.

A Blu-ray insider just "unofficially" confirmed that Warner went Blu-ray exclusive. He's dropping hints like Warner VP Alan Bell is supervising the BD50 replication plant where this insider works.

Still awaiting official confirmation (if there even is one).

OK people, clarify some stuff for me please.

1) So Warner putting their massive catalog behind BRD effectively ends this stupidity keeping HD discs away from my nice Samsung TV?

2) Is there an actual good, standards-compliant BRD player that's not the PS3?

3) So, let's assume I bite the bullet and get a PS3. They're regularly upgrading the BRD player in this toaster, right?

4) How are the upgrades working out for the el cheapo players? For instance, that $270 Samsung on Amazon - is it fully compatible? If they're not "compatible" with certain movies, will those movies outright refuse to play?

5) I've got a 5.1 DD/DTS rig. Will this be able to handle the TrueHD stuff and the other new formats? I haven't yet figured out how this works. It seems like the BRD player will decode the audio and spit it out over optical in PCM or some such, and the surround system can use that info even if it's TrueHD instead of traditional 5.1 stuff on DVDs. Right or wrong?

Thanks!

Not happening imho, but if it did you better buy your discs now. Prices will be going back to $30 a pop without the competition.

1. No idea.
2. Panasonic BD30. Profile 1.1, and has bitstream of HD Audio codecs (i.e you need a a receiver with Dolby True HD and DTS Master logos on them)
3. Yes.
4. Most of the updates for standalones are for Java related disc problems. Don't buy a player expecting it to have new features.
5. For True HD, you can get the PS3 and any receiver with HDMI audio capability. However, I would recommend the onkyo 605, which goes for $399 or less.

Just an update on my Lost Season 3 not playing in my PS3 (in case anyone other than Naked Snake was wondering).

I got a replacement set from Best Buy but it was exhibiting the same problems. It was suggested to me at AVS that people were seeing similar behavior from POTC:AWE on the PS3 (I don't have that disc yet so I haven't paid attention to any discussion) and people have been resolving it by changing their 1080p/24Hz setting. I had my PS3 set to 24Hz "On." I changed it to "Automatic" and it was a bit less flakey loading the discs, but still refused to load a few of the discs and wasn't reliable in starting some of the others.

Then, I completely turned the 24Hz option off and I was able to play every single disc in the set without problems.

I'm wondering if this is some consistent fault with the PS3 implementation of 24Hz or if it is something in the way Disney is authoring these discs (since both POTC and Lost are Buena Vista releases). In either case, it would be nice if the issue could get sorted out because I'd prefer to playback Lost in 24Hz since my display does support it.

Still, it is good to know I can get them to play and won't be on an endless quest of returning sets endlessly back to the store.

Not sure if this has been posted, but there are apparent issues with the Harry Potter collections:

One last quick note today - some readers who have purchased Warner's Harry Potter: Years 1-5 - Limited Edition Gift Set on Blu-ray Disc are reporting an unwelcome surprise in the case. Films 1-4 are the Blu-rays as ordered, but The Order of the Phoenix is the HD-DVD version. D'oh! Make sure you check your case before you leave the store. Wonder if the same is happening in reverse...

I understand the DVD version of the set has a similar problem, with widescreen and fullscreen copies being mixed in some sets.

The last I heard was that this was related to TV sets which reported that they supported 24Hz but don't properly implement it and Sony hasn't done its due diligence to implement work arounds for some of these incomplete/incorrect implementations.

Why would the VP of a movie studio go anywhere fucking near a disc pressing plant? Do they press coke there too?

Between the Blu Ray and HD DVD BOGO sales at Amazon, I have spent $260 on HD movies in the past month. That's normally about what I'd spend in a year or so on DVDs. But 26 HD movies at $10 each was hard to walk away from. I figured I'd better get 'em while I can, because once this format price "war" is over and the dust settles around a "winner," all these types of sales are over for a long, long while.

Besides, hell, I can't even get The Searchers or Rio Bravo on regular DVD for ten bucks.

It was a joke that went over a lot of people's heads. There's a long, boring story behind it, and Penton-man was not seriously implying that Alan Bell is supervising operations at their replication plants. There's a guy named David Vaughn who's been leaking out Nielson's numbers a few days in advance for several weeks now. He has also been spreading rumors that BD-50 yields are terrible. Penton-man was asked if it's unethical for Vaughn to be leaking the Nielson numbers. Jokingly, he replied that he hadn't responded to it because everyone's been too busy making sure the replication plants can handle Warner Brothers going exclusive to Blu-ray, and that Alan Bell is supervising the process.

However, Penton-man has verified the rumor that WB is leaning towards Blu-ray exclusivity has teeth, but has also said that no deal has been finalized and they may in fact wait until after seeing Q1 numbers before they make a decision.

fuck should i just return my hd-a3 player back to amazon.com and get a ps3 better?

No - it was a joke that DarkJediKnight oddly thought was true. Warner might go BRD, and they might not. I mean, get a PS3 if you want, but I wouldn't return your A3...

Well, the WB denail doesn't convince me that it won't happen... but it does tell me that it isn't going to happen in the next couple of weeks. That's my take anyway.

And why woudl they? All they'd likely do by announcing right now is cause a lot of retail confusion.

Just thought I'd chime in with a quick question.

Which looks better on a 1080i TV, the Blu-Ray version of Planet Earth, or the HD-DVD version?

There is absolutely no difference in image quality between the two versions.

Much cheaper on Amazon.

Well, $20 bucks cheaper. And no tax.
But CC lets you add an HDMI cable for only $39.99!

$300 is still too expensive for me, but it's getting closer. I'll probably be purple before Summer.

You want to avoid these anyway. Ps3 or one of the upcoming 1.1-2.0 profile players is what you should be looking for. Unless these hit $99 and you don't care about the special features on BD discs coming out starting in January.

Well, of course it will happen (it being that WB will be exclusive to one or the other at some point). My own inclination is to believe that nothing is set in stone now, that significant dollars are being bandied about, and that the propagation of this rumor is a significant bargaining chip.

Nearly 1 million HD DVD standalones will have been sold in the US by the end of the year - I do not believe the format is a near term dead end.
