:lol where are you shopping? Never spend more than $30.
$30 is insane, too. I've never bought a blu-ray disc and with these prices, I never will.

I'd definitely go for a reasonably priced Eastern Promises/History of Violence pack for blu-ray...too bad it won't be happening any time soon :(

What's with Master and Commander having three different studios? What's the story behind it?

20th Century Fox owns the rights to the movie, Miramax and Universal helped finance it.

20th Century Fox distributes it to most of the world, Miramax in Italy, Argentina, and theatrically in Japan, and Universal in France, and home video in Japan.

^to the guy talking about needing $2000+ speakers to hear difference between lossless and lossy audio tracks

I've tested a PCM track (Cars BD) on 6 $20 speakers.

Even my girlfriend could hear the difference.
It only gets better and better with monitor level speakers.

Do you even have a receiver which can take the signal and decode it properly? AFAIK you need an HDMI receiver to take advantage of PCM. Otherwise it just gets downsampled. Though I suppose you might be using Optical, but even then its downsampled to 2.0 PCM.

Well, I never spent 30$ either. Like I said. Most BD can be had for 25 dollar'ish.

It's not that bad considering DVDs cost that much when they came on the scene. And they still do. :/

I'm not a tech noob.

I have an HDMI 1.3 receiver.

OK. Couldn't find out much about the specific tech specs of your unit, since HTIB systems are generally hard to find this info on, and yours is no different.

No audio snobbery here, I'm just going to tell you how it is, OK?

The best audio your receiver supports is DTS and Dolby Digital. So don't even worry about stuff like DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. That stuff is the realm of $500 (minimum) receivers and $2000+ speaker systems.
OK. That will probably be alright. I'm OK with being behind the curve a bit until prices come down. :)

If it doesn't work, or won't pass along the video or process the audio properly, you may be better off bypassing the HDMI input on your receiver altogether, hooking the HDMI output from your player directly into the HDTV's HDMI input, and using an optical cable (otherwise known as a toslink cable) to input the audio into your receiver. (I checked, and your receiver does have an optical input.)
I may go that route. Currently, my HD cable box uses the HDMI input, and the HDMI output goes back up to my TV. The TV is a Sammy LN-S4051D, so it does 720p/1080i with two HDMI inputs. It can pass an optical out to the receiver's optical in, so this will solve my HDMI switching needs until my 360 RRDs and gets replaced with a HDMI model. I know the receiver can handle up to 1080i output, since the cable box can shoot stuff to it at that resolution.

I'll likely try to get this thing to accept the PCM audio and live with the results. I'm more interested in the enhanced image than better audio, since good ol' DVD 5.1 stuff sounds great to me anyway.

Thanks for your replies!

Any word on Lost season 1 and 2 on blu-ray? I've never seen a full episode because I always intended to start the series from the beginning... and I prefer to do so in HD.

Link to the Fry's BOGO? Their $9.95 titles are the only ones I can find at the site.

That's pretty much all there is. I don't think they've added any new titles since they started it.

Has anyone had any luck finding any deals for the Harry Potter movies on Blu-Ray?

I like the warner deal, but I don't like the shipping issues...

thanks, yeh ive heard of that stuff.

just figured out a free way to do it thru google though. warm water on a cloth loosens the adhesive and then you wipe it off with a dry cloth. took my about 5 minutes of rubbin and its all nice now.

i use scotch tape.. it's kind of slow and tedious but what i do is i keep applying and quickly peeling the scotch tape off and eventually i get every last bit of sticker residue... *shrug*

I do this but after soaking the case (sans insert + disc, of course) for about 15 minutes in hot water.

Scrub for effect. Works on anything sticky.

Citrus Solvent takes it off with impossible ease. Just make sure to wipe off residue with damp kitchen roll after.

What's the Warner deal? Is it for HD-DVD as well?

I'd be interested in picking up this boxset for the right price.

I believe 25% off.

But people have reported terrible shipping issues.

I think those have been solved. I got my box set on the release date, as did pretty much everyone else who'd preordered it from them.

They have not been solved. I had 2001 on order still until last week when I cancelled that and Blade Runner.

The savings look great on paper, but fuck those guys.

I think that for new orders they have been solved. Some orders got caught in their transition from one warehouse source to another (or something like that).

Just got back from Bestbuy and picked up Jesus Bourne and free Transformers. Great deal. Can't wait for Blade Runner and Simpsons this week; never seen Blade Runner =)

Hmmm, decent Amazon BOGO deal. I'm definitely getting 28 Weeks Later, undecided on my second choice. Does anyone know if The Fly BD is any good?

Some rereleases on blu:
January 22nd 2008

Terminator 2
Punisher
Total Recall
Stargate
Devil's Rejects
Stir of Echoes

Nobody knows yet if these are just lower prices skus ( which is where I am leaning ) or new encodes.

Studios now regularly co-finance to defray the risk of expensive, non-traditional films. In the case of Master and Commander that was a good bet. Though it was amazing (easily one of my favorite studio pictures of the last 10 years) it didn't perform all that well. For one studio alone to eat that loss would have been more catastrophic.

For fans of different kinds of pictures this strategy is great -- studios are that much less wary because they know that in certain cases they can find others to help absorb the risk.

I wonder if HD-DVD could win a week this year.....maybe next week?

I hope not, I wan't this war to end soon for either side

Next ( this ) week hd-dvd has a very strong bogo at best buy ( Bourne, Shrek, Transformers etc) but I think the Simpson's movie should counter that plus Blu also has one at best buy.
The week after is interesting with The Kingdom and Eastern Promises vs Rush Hour 3.

My dad was asking me whether or not the market is leaning towards BluRay or HD-DVD. I told him that I really have no idea and that I think it is still deadlocked. However, I really don't know if that is true or not. Is either one of them moving ahead as the leader?

I'm not about to read the past 400+ pages, so does any have a quick answer?

Why wouldn't you get Die Hard did you go the store to pick it up? I thought of your stupid story when I saw this deal and said oh he lucked out.

Fantastic. I'm not a big fan of Fox movies, but I see a few movies there I can buy. Add that to the ones I picked up yesterday at Best Buy, and my BR collection just doubled. :D

With almost all hardware manufacturers, plus the majority of movie studios and the disc sales advantage I think Blu-Ray has the lead right now.

Is the uncut version of Die Hard available in hi-def yet?

Also, were the Grindhouse movies released in hi-def?

Damn, if they had Flags of Our Fathers, I would TOTALLY buy Letters from Iwo Jima and it. :( I already have Happy Feet, Relentless Enemies (which didn't work with my 360 HD player for those considering it) and The Departed.

Anyone know if Troy DC is much better than the theatrical version?

Yeah, there isn't really an area anywhere where HD-DVD has a definitive lead, or anything that would suggest they could gain one in sales anytime in the foreseeable future.

Warner going HD-DVD exclusive would be just about the only thing to breathe some life into the format, but the odds of this happening are astronomically small.
