Amazon still hasn't shipped my Blade Runner. I should probably cancel at this point and take my chances in the stores. It shouldn't be a hard to find item.

I pre-ordered my Amazon 5 disc copy months ago (on August 1st!), and about a 2 months ago I got a notice that it would not ship until 12/24 (no clear reason was given). There was no real reason for the delay. Considering I ordered so early I thought that was lame. I may cancel and go to a B/M store.

Whaa? Do you have a link?

If you've read hardware charts for the consoles, the PS2 sold the most units in Europe, not North America. Last time I looked at number, which was quite a few months ago, the PS2 had sold about 47 million in Europe and 44 million in North America. I'm not saying Europe is the largest market for all game consoles, the Xbox did far better in America, but overall the Europe market is larger.

As for DVD player, I saw it in a consumers report like 6-7 months ago. Sorry I'm not going to spend the time to go back and find that link. You don't have to believe me that Europe is the larger market, but it is by no means "dwarfed" by the North American market.

They REALLY need to figure out a more secure method for holding the discs in multi-disc boxes. I got home with my HD DVD Blade Runner set last night and EVERY SINGLE ONE of the discs had popped off the hubs and were scratched. Same thing happened with the Planet Earth set I bought. It's a pain in the ass to return stuff, especially this time of year.

Only the last disc had come off for me, but I was lucky and it wasn't scratched.

Picked up my copy of Blade Runner on Blu-ray this morning... also picked up a couple of Harry Potter flicks, a gift copy of Purple Rain and a copy of The Fifth Element. Saw two girls in their mid-20's in the Blu-ray section each with 3-4 releases in their hands... I'd guess Christmas presents for their similarly-aged husbands.

To note, no one was looking at the much smaller HD DVD racks.

I just thought it must not come out until 12/24 and that was why it wasn't shipping until then. :( I too pre-ordered some time ago (nowhere near as early as you though) and was wondering what was up with that. Talk about *lame!*

Yeah, it's so funny that I was trying to give a first-hand account of the marketplace in my area. So funny.

I would be interested in a more in-depth report. Could you stay there for maybe a day? You could disguise yourself as a promotional box/rack of unwanted HD DVDs, and record your observations with a hidden camera.

Two ridiculous responses in a matter of minutes. Bravo.

I honestly have never seen someone buy an HD-DVD title in store. And there have been only a few times I've seen someone purchase a Blu-ray title. Online sales overwhelming brick and mortar when it comes to high-def?

Unless it's Fry's, I never really go to B&M stores for Hi-Def media. It's just too damn overpriced. Unless of course there's a BOGO or something.

I've bought each of the HD titles I own thus far online until just the other day, when I picked up Bourne Ultimatum, which I only got in a store because I was exchanging a couple of the lamer freebies I got free in the mail on BD when I bought my PS3. Retail HD media prices are by and large absolutely ridiculous everywhere I've seen.

Yeah, I rarely pick hi-def movies up in stores, especially at Best Buy. Lost was marked at $119 on Blu-ray last week in the store. What's up with that crap? I really can't help but think that brick and mortar stores are slowing down HD media adoption rates with the astronomical prices they're asking. The average HD-DVD and Blu-ray in a place like Best Buy is $25+ with many getting up to $35.

It has happened, the Blue versus Red war has begun in earnest.

I'm split straight down the middle with Blue and Red (I'll post collection pics later). I just find it funny how crazy sensitive most of the blu-ray fans are around here. I've said it before, and I don't really feel like getting into it again, but the hypersensitivity gets very old. If you've got nothing better to do than stealth troll a movie format in a war where numbers aren't even a drop in the bucket of the movie market (so far), then you need to find better things to do with your time. The emotional attachment to these things is unhealthy for a lot of people around here, whether they care to see that or not.

Carry on though. I guess it's fine to be passionate about a hobby, I just find it funny just how passionate many of us have become.

Uhh... how am I the sensitive one when you're the one who immediately took the defensive from a simple comment about sales in Best Buy this morning? I think maybe you might want to re-evaluate that.

This is very true, which is why I've stopped caring about my friends and family. My emotional investment in Blu-ray is far too draining as it is and, well, priorities are priorities.

There are sensitive people on both sides, no need to generalize about one single camp.

Sorry, I didn't mean to just nail the blues, but it just seems that on this forum, the blues are more itchy and likely to pounce than the reds. I know if you go to AVS it's often the reverse. Whatever, it's just like the stupid console wars all over again.

Anyway, today my Harry Potter box set (hd-dvd), Bourne trilogy (hd-dvd), Simpsons Movie (blu), and Stardust (hd-dvd) should all be arriving on my doorstep. It's too bad they're all for the wife for Christmas, or else I'd be set for movie watching the rest of the week.

Well, that's two for two on the Blade Runner deal. Got the second one home, opened it, and two of the discs were loose. The guy at the store even let me shake it to make sure, and I didn't hear or feel anything - they were wedged tight. Luckily, the first disc was still on the hub, but the work print disc is nice and scuffed, as is one of the DVD supplementary discs. This was the last HD DVD set they had at Moviestop, too. I'm either going to take the scratched discs back and let them run it through their buffing machine - if that's advisable - or I'm going to email Warner and see if they'll mail me replacement discs.

I'll say this about Blu Ray - that coating is a point in their favor. Out of all the Blu Rays I've rented through Netflix, only a couple have had any noticeable scratches, whereas the HD DVDs seem to scratch just as easily as DVDs. The HD DVD camp needs to get on that hard coating situation pronto. And both sides need to fix the packaging issues on multi-disc sets.

Well, just got my copy of Bladerunner. Despite the package feeling nice and solid, Disc 4, which is one of the supplementary DVD's, was loose. Some substantial scratches on it, too. I think I'm just going to contact Warner Bros, since there's no real way to tell by shaking the package, making the exchange process almost pointless.

honestly I just dont see how anyone could support HD DVD at this point when all the good movie titles except a select few are on Blu-Ray. I remember when I was deciding which format to get, I just looked at the movie titles, I couldn't even decide on 5 for HD DVD, and now having bought a PS3 3 weeks ago I'm in movie heaven.

Software is what wins the fight, and Blu-Ray has won.

Thanks for the contribution junior!

edit: If you can look at either the Blu or HD side and honestly say there aren't 5 EXCLUSIVE movies you'd want to see/own, then you obviously have a very limited taste in movies.

If you're using software to declare the superior format, then the clearcut winner is
DVD
. Which is why it will hold a place alongside for many years still to come.

Man, your right. All these moves I own are horrible. I should take them back.

I don't own BRD, but I know there are at least 5 movies I would buy the day I get one. Heck, I could probably name 10 off the top of my head.

eh, I actually think HD-DVD had much better software to start. They are pretty much even IMHO. There are plenty of HD-DVD exclusives that I want. I am just willing to wait.

went to several stores this morning and no one had a copy of Blade Runner in either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. a little annoying, but my consolation was getting COD4 for $35 w/$10 coupon.

Unfortunately for movie fans, it really is like a SNES/Genesis war all over. The only way to get all the good HDM out is to own both.

Well, I ended up taking Bladerunner back because the Workprint disc was also scratched, despite not being loose. I had to go for the Ultimate version because they were all out of the other kind. The clerk did feel my pain and gave me an extra $5.00 off.

I only meant in terms of both sides having exclusive 'games/movies,' not in terms of sales obviously. Or even quantity.

edit: One of the biggest problems HDM has had is getting the classic catalog titles out and looking fantastic. Until that happens, both lineups will be severely lacking. But, both have more than a handful of must-see movies.

For now, yes. Unlike SNES/Genesis, the market won't put up with two formats, and I think it's very unrealistic to expect both HD-DVD and Blu-ray to be around a few years from now. It'll be one or the other.

Sony should be getting the most catalog releases out because almost from the beginning of DVD's life they've been archiving the movies in 1080p (I remember an article from 1998 about it) so it should be a matter of just finding the replication room for the releases, right? I mean, that and maybe the new contracts for the people involved for a Blu-Ray release.

I'm sure most other studios were doing the same thing so unless it's all contracts and finding room in a replication facility there should be more catalog releases.

I tend to agree with this as well. The market can't and won't put up with two movie formats that are essentially the same. But for someone in this thread to say that one side or the other has no exclusive movies worth owning is just ludicrous. I'll go back to lurking now :D

Does anyone have info on when/if criterion is going to go HD? I'm pretty sure they are waiting for a format to emerge victorious first

Also Wes Anderson films have been released on criterion exclusively since Royal Tennenbaums, It was distributed by fox searchlight. Any word on the Darjeeling limited coming to blu-ray? Google searched and came up empty.

Tenenbaums was released by Buena Vista/Disney. Darjeeling is Fox Searchlight. The DVD is scheduled for March according to The Digital Bits, but no word on a Blu-ray release.

So can I find The Simpsons Movie Blu Ray in stores cheaper for $34.99?

I want to get this for a xmas gift, but there is no way I'm spending 35 bucks on the movie.
