So I hear Profile 1.1 has the ability to decode TWO 1080p streams. One for PIP and one for the main feature, allowing you to switch back and forth between which is the fullscreen and which is the PIP. Anyone know if this is being done on all titles, or is this just a "case by case" basis?

Edit: Holy shit at Blu-Ray in Japan :O

A bunch of Warner titles on BD and HD DVD are currently at 19.99 at Futureshop, including all Stanley Kubrick's titles.

Picked up Full Metal Jacket (re-master) and Clockwork Orange. Will pick up 2001 A Space Odyssey later on this week.
Once again I thank you. I'll pay 'em a visit tomorrow.

What exactly is being tracked by those charts? The first word in the titles is DVD Recorder.

Yes, it looks like DVD Recorder market share. I think these are standalone recorders, though, not PC drives.

If I'm not mistaken Blu-ray was initially conceived as a format for recording HD broadcasts - so that's why it's the market leader by far in Japan, where consumers wanted such a device. The ROM version of Blu-ray came later - it's why Blu-ray recorders are much more advanced than their HD DVD counterparts. (Besides, HD DVD is clearly inferior as a recordable format - with real time encodes you can't pack the data as efficiently, which means that 50GB is pretty inarguably better than 30GB.)

I hear the new BD recorders also play BD-ROM movies so they are leveraging their advantage in recorders for prerecorded discs.

That Japanese chart most likely is measuring the percentage of each format making up all discs sales for that week. The vastly increased numbers have to do with the much greater sales of PS3 recently in Japan. I'm also most likely completely wrong.

has calmed down a bit.
So those are recorder sales? I'm sure the software sales are similar, but not when compared to dvd.

And spookie, think about what you just said happens in Harry Potter and how that would work for director video commentary and storyboards. The storyboards don't even play with sound, so would the studios create two separate versions and add some audio commentary to the storyboards/pics? In any event, that doesn't seem to be the case for RE.

dotcal, profile 1.1 allows for two 1080p streams, but it's optional. It doesn't seem like the one in RE is 1080p.

Japanese charts are DVD recorder sales not software.

Panasonic owns that market >80% of sales I'd guess. Last numbers back in January showed they had >95% of all recorder sales, Sony was next with ~4% and Toshiba less than a percent.

That market is perfect for Blu-ray since it is cheaper per gigabyte and can hold more gigabytes at a time. Blu-ray willl totally annex that market in the next 2yrs in Japan.

Just watched A Few Good Men on Blu-Ray.

Aside from the colours looking a bit washed out the picture quality is amazing, with excellent black levels, a pristine print that could have been filmed yesterday and oodles of detail, especially on Jack's face. Quite the triumph for a movie filmed 15 years ago.

is PIP only just extra screen overlay on the movie screen? what will be on the PIP screen, like interview?

I can't see if it would do for me on any movies, maybe porn like multiangle view sound reasonable useful for me :p
Main problem is I rarely use any features but maybe outtakes sometime.

I would like to know how further great about PIP, tell me more what I have miss out?

I have a BD Blade Runner set...I don't particularly like the movie so I'd be up for a trade.

I only have Deja Vu available on Blu, but I have other HD DVD's available. We may need to bring in a third party and make it a three way trade. I feel like a sports general manager.

I tend to skip over most special features as well, but I've gotta say that the whole PIP thing is pretty slick. A bunch of Universal HD DVDs have the u-control interface, where a little icon will pop up and allow you to access all sorts of random info during a movie, including PIP video clips. Children of Men was wild, since you could use it to bring up full versions of all the commercials that played in the background, and it also let you actually bring up newspaper articles that the camera briefly glanced over.

I just find that the PIP thing is pretty engaging, since you aren't actually leaving the movie at any time. Yeah, it's essentially being used for glorified commentary tracks a lot of the time, but I can only see these tracks becoming cooler as the formats mature.

Eh? This is for The Bourne Ultimatum release week. It was guaranteed to be closer.

It just seems every week during the past few months has been "this will the last close week because of HD DVD title X", yet it keeps being close every other week or so.

Is that from Vaughn, or is that just the Avs prediction?
Blu-ray.com was reporting this but it seems they think they are premature.

Nah, it is right in line with every week.
They are always put up ( unofficially ) when their "predict the numbers for the week" game or whatever they call it ends.
People can believe them or not, it is their choice but for the last month or more they have been spot on.

eh? last week was a blowout and this week was expected to be close because of bourne.

Funny my brother was asking me if I got the new bourne and I had to explain to him that it was HD-DVD only and the PS3 only plays blurays. :lol He was like "HUH I saw the commercial for it it was available in HD!"

UGG I love format war!

not.

ah, nice thx. I'm glad, I didn't want to hear about a one week victory forever, and the sooner we get to one of these, the sooner I can get a decent bulk of movies.

I don't know who's been saying that HD DVD wasn't going to have some close weeks this quarter... as far as I know everyone in this thread knew that Transformers week, Shrek week and Bourne week would be much closer.

People are acting childish in this thread but nevertheless Warner needs to step up and end this war by supporting exclusively Blu-ray. They know Microsoft is only funding HD-DVD to prolong the format war and sabotage the HD disc format, they know that this war is only stalling the HD from becoming mainstream and they know now than in Japan where there's only one format HD is quickly becoming mainstream.

End this war Warner, for your gain.

The war is not why HD media is not catching on. High prices of players, media and flakey players that require monthly firmware upgrades are why. The war is needed to fix those things. If the war is to end right now for HD media to catch on HD-dvd should be the winner. Hd-dvd has better prices and their damn specs finalized no 1.0 1.1 2.0 and what ever blu thinks of tomarrow. Sony is the one who can end this war release a standalone 2.0 player at 249 or less and it is over.

I disagree and Japan proves you wrong. The war only keeps the HD format from becoming mainsteam which is something that would decrease prices once and for all.

Player price does not mean anything in the scheme of things or HD would have run away with it long ago, or at least won one week.
The player prices will be at that price in no time, considering you can already get players for 279 or so and when 1.1s hit the market in numbers they will reach that price quickly.
That still will not do a damned thing if Warner does not switch.
If someone is so anal to demand a player that cheap then they sure as hell are not going to run out to buy movies for 20-30 dollars every week.
