Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
I was really disappointed by American Gangster, it pretty much seemed like they spliced the Godfather and Scarface together and put it in Harlem.
Yes i know it was a true story. I guess my expectations were too high.

I too was disappointed heavily by American Gangster. :(

I want Star Wars, I want Lord of the Rings, I want every movie that comes to dvd to be day and date with a high def format of choice, I want a steady flow of catalog titles, I want anime, horror, low budget and other genre things.
These will NOT happen until there is ONE format.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where you selling off your HD DVD movies and player will help accomplish this. Let me hear that part again.

I was responding to someone who asked why I would abandon neutrality, I answered.
No more, and no less.
I do not believe in neutrality being good for high definition media no matter which side, but saying that while I have both is a bit insincere.
Either way I am confident enough in where things are going that I feel no need to keep both.

VanMardigan

Yeah, ok. See you here next year, still wondering why you sold your player and when you're going to see the Universal/Paramount films on Blu. I would at least wait for Warner to make a move first, since nothing changes unless they do.

BTW, I know dc rider mentioned the amazon stuff, but I didn't realize the impressive part. According to Engadget HD, not only is a high def title the #1 selling dvd on Amazon for the first time ever, but the TOP FOUR selling dvd's are the Harry Potter HD DVD's. That's the most obvious sign yet of how far the HD disc market has come this year.

Are we sure about this? I thought Casino Royale hit #1 on Amazon back when it came out...

I'm not downplaying anything, just genuinely curious.

VanMardigan

No, the highest was 300 at #2. Again, though, hitting #1 for the first time ever would've been cool enough on its own, but to have the TOP FOUR slots be HD discs is just impressive.

...or it's another indicator of how miserably small the overall market is - that a lone title can tip the balance for any period of time.

Except we're comparing to Amazon's dvd sales charts, which is usually dominated by, you know, dvd's. There has been no indication that the "balance" has been tipped at all. Just a show of force by HD discs on Amazon's chart. On the back of a BOGO sale.

We're also not talking about any individual title, it's 4 format neutral titles, and before this sale, the BD edition had outsold the HD DVD edition 1.2-1.

They are 19.99 + BOGO and they were just released WEEKS AGO, are you that blind that you can not see why that would make things a big favorable?
Perhaps you should look at some of the "deals" forums where you can see the hordes of people who have been salivating over the money that they will make by returning the movies for full price.
"Sign of how far the hd disc market has come"...you have got to be kidding me.

VanMardigan

But are the hordes of folks selling back tons of HD DVD movies at full price to merchants they didn't buy it from to make huge amounts of money going to do that in time for Warner to realize it was all a sham and go Blu exclusive at the HD DVD conference?!?!?!?! :lol

If you think that Warner has not already made their minds up, more power to you.
Will be an interesting spring.

How are sales of the warner titles comparing so far across both formats? I would assume the warner titles would sell more on hd-dvd due to their being less to choose from, but is blu-ray outselling them on the harry potters, etc?

Nope.

blu-ray consistently outsells the HD-DVD version of pretty much everything, potters included. I think the only exception to this was planet earth.

nope. the bolded items are blu-ray.

61% of the titles sold this week were blu-ray. Good showing for bourne this week, but not enough to actually change anything. as someone else pointed out..same old story this week with blu dominating the charts.

Hey Ookie, I don't see why you should get a free pass for the same shit other folks have been nailed for. Provide sources when you return, or dial it back.

finally some numbers and even with bourne blu-ray still came out on top. Looks like Harry potter blu is out on top too, hopefully this can sway warner.

Thank you, I was about to say something because DAMN, ookie was getting away with a lot of stuff and general douchebag-like attitude that juniors get banned for, but nothing was said. :)

Blade Runner HD beat BR...thanks to me :)

Wow, ban-o-rama. I've been away, I missed a new troll and Ookie skirting the line (as he often does) one time too many!

Nice showing by Bourne, and not bad for HD-DVD by recent standards.

So what be the verdict HD Gaffers? I haven't seen it and was thinking of picking it up

I was extremely disappointed. It is very watchable, but in the Gangster genre it is pretty average. I would give it a 6 out of 10. A rental only. Not even on the level of a Blow or Donnie Brasco.

WHAT

:lol at all the bans the last couple pages.

On another topic, is anyone else still having trouble with availability of new releases in there areas? Well, actually NOT 'new' releases, but catalog releases. I seem to, Went to Future Shop a few times looking for Terminator 3 on BD, but they don't even have it in there computers yet, and now for this week, I am still unable to find Pans. Took them a damn week extra to get the collectors ed of Blade Runner. They had EVERY OTHER version, all DVD versions, all HD DVD versions, but ONLY the BD Ultimate on release day. Is this just my area?

For the record, for most new releases they are fine. Thank god they had Lost on release.

I noticed FS didn't have Blade Runner in stock on day 1 (at least where I live), but it was at Best Buy (albiet the BD sold out early...).

Don't even think about looking for Warner movies, those are always troublesome (I don't think we have the Kubricks on BD yet).

Very solid BR performance but isn't HD-DVD trending upwards according to that number? To put my cards on the table, I'm a Blu fan, but really I just want the war to end, and HD-DVD rising to own nearly 40% of software sales would make *me* leery about throwing that market share away if I were on the board at Warner. Not seeing much incentive for them to go Blu, unless the production costs are wildly high for producing both formats and/or Sony packs a hat full of money. They also have numbers showing that the untapped HD customers who haven't jumped in yet are more inclined to invest in HD-DVD. My guess at the CES outcome is that the war marches on just the same. Sigh.

That and the fact that sales of Warner titles are at a closer margin.

Also, I'm pretty sure this would be Bourne's second week, wouldn't it?

Guess what's coming to blu-ray Januay 3rd in Italy?

First tragedy, then farce.
HDDVD isnt really trending upwards, its staying the same (more or less) in relation to BRD. There have been some weeks where HDDVD did better than normal, some where it did worse, but 60/40 seems to be the split.

I think it actually says alot that HDDVD wasnt steamrolled this xmas season, even with the increase in PS3 sales, a ton of BOGO sales, and a huge trend upward in overall HDM sales. The next big test is going to be the "13th" month of the year, to see how all the new gifted players (and PS3's) for both formats effect overall sales of discs. Which is likely why Toshiba (and whoever else) is paying for a BOGO at amazon, and the buy 3 get 2 free sale at BB next week.

Assuming WB doesnt go BRD neutral (or HDDVD neutral) and HDDVD can maintain the 60/40 gap over the next month or two, I really see this turning into a stalemate (for a million reasons detailed in past posts).

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I just want to see if the HD DVD BOGO's will affect the ratio. This is the first time that HD DVD is really having such a fantastic deal on movies, while Blu fans are spoiled. Heck, half of th 6 BR movies I own I got for free.

Well, 60:40 is hardly a noticeable victory or defeat when you consider the number of sales. I really doubt that those numbers are going to sway anybody to one side or the other, since going exclusive effectively cuts out more than 1/3 of their market reach. Moneyhats are needed if people are still hoping for exclusivity.

As a long time Simpsons fan, I almost feel dirty being one of those sales for The Simpsons Movie. I didn't catch it in theaters, so watching it Christmas night was the first time. That movie stunk. The writers are soooo bad these days. I wish the series had pulled a Seinfeld and bowed out after season 9 or 10.
