There were so many similar responses to my post, that I won't bother quoting them all. Basically, I understand that the majority of rumors from everyone, on both sides of this format war, are just that- rumors. However, sadly, FUD does work, sometimes, and with so many big companies with a stake in the matter, there is a lot of funding in disinformation. Hence, the safest thing for me to do is to not sell my current collection of Blu-ray movies, but suspend further purchases for the time being. I'm not the type of person who absolutely needs new releases day-and-date. If I really wanted to see a movie that badly, I'd have seen it in theaters already. If Blu-ray ends up on top, I'm golden, and can pick up the movies that I held off on. If HD DVD wins, then I'm not too deeply invested in Blu-ray, and can make the switch with minimal loss.
I'd only sell my Blu-ray movies, if it became clear that Blu-ray lost too much studio support, and would inevitably fold. Without mainstream support, there's no reasonable expectation that Blu-ray players will be available in the future. I'd doubt PS4 would even include Blu-ray, if Blu-ray lost the format war. Sony already dropped backwards compability with its latest PS3 skus, so it's not farfetched to think it could be the same with PS4. If HD DVD won, and went mainstream, then building a PS4 with HD DVD would be a bigger incentive to more people, than being backwards compatible with PS3. While true, that Sony has lost several format wars, before, they were never too proud to join the winning side when the war was over.
I think the next best thing to one side winning over the other, would be for dual-format players/writers to become the standard like it is with DVD+/-R. In fact, that may even be the ideal scenario, since no one would lose, and everyone who wasn't already neutral could start picking up movies that were exclusive to the opposite format.
