Wouldn't Sony have to sell something like 600,000-900,000 (Not exactly sure of the figure) more then what Microsoft does for an entire year to catch up?

Yes but is doable come next year March after another price drop this year .

Sony is now poised with the challenge of capturing those who've already bought HD-DVDs

How did Toshiba allow that low-cost standalone player to be released? Was it made at-cost? Were there write-offs?

Sony needs to come out with a player that is similar price range to boost the medium past it's current state.

The only savior.... and I truly mean the ONLY savior to HD DVD is..... LucasFilm.

If Star Wars.... is ONLY released on HD DVD, then truly the war will tipped back in HD DVD's favor of which Blu-Ray can't stop the inevitable.

That said, if they go with Blu-Ray, I'll eat the last bite of crow and request a tag change.

It would have to sell Wii like numbers and the Xbox 360 would have to sell early 2007ish Playstation 3 numbers in order for this to come true. Not to mention the Xbox 360 being in a much better position for a price drop then the Playstation 3.

Indeed, so the 'overtaking' could take a little longer than what most people believe. IF it will happen.

how the fuck would you feel if you spent $400 bucks on a player and hundreds of dollars on movies and I told you Warner, Fox & Disney were going HD DVD today?

Seriously. Comments about which either is better or which ever has more movies... who the fuck cares..... At the end of the day it's about High Def movies that MOVIE LOVERS WANT TO WATCH IN HIGH FUCKING DEF.

Now the "Red" crowd is left scratching their head on what they can do with their players and movies.

If you were in the same god damn boat I would bet money we'd be making the same snide comments that everyone is making toward HD DVD owners. So seriously..... lay off.

No they dont.
In december even before this news blu stand alones outsold hd stand alones.
People seriously need to get off of the price shit because the cheap players did not do shit for hd now did it.

No they don't. Sony is in a pretty good spot with their product lineup. It makes sense for them to have a lower-end standalone player in the $250 range, the value-leading PS3 range, (which will eventually get another price drop) and then a few higher-end standalone units.

Sony needs to let their partners come out with the bargain standalone machines, IMO. Let Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Hitachi, Sharp, JVC, et. al. go to work building the Blu-ray market with some of their products as well, while Sony and the BDA advertise the hell out of the format.

The PS3 will still be seen as a value, even if some other machines cost a bit less. The PS3 obviously does much more than a standalone. And a healthy market, with more companies in the mix making more and more Blu-ray players, will only lower costs for Sony on the PS3 end, allowing their next PS3 price drop to come sooner and with less stress on Sony's balance sheets, which could help them catch up a bit.

If someone comes out with a sub-$200 machine, great. It doesn't need to be Sony though.

Man, now that Blu Ray is in the bag, i just want to start buying films again. I still want to get Casino Royale, Last Samurai, Independence Day etc, its just UK hardly ever get any deals. There is the buy 3 for 2, but its still fecking £34 or so just for 2 discs..

By the time blu ray reaches that kind of mass market appeal that it can overturn the 360's cushy lead, there'll be cheaper bluray players out.

I think standalones already hit the $300 mark, which is cheaper than PS3.

I would feel pretty stupid, but you put it on yourself as an early adopter in a format war. I think its the stupidest thing to jump in those kinds of wars unless you have disposable income for the players. If you didn't then you did yourself a disservice and no one should feel sorry for you.

The only exception is the PS3 where you get more out of the box than just the format. That is the only justifiable purchase in an on-going format war if you ask me.

ID4 still needs to come out on BRD, so take your time. I'm not sure if Last Samurai is out yet, but if not, you might have to wait for a year when it makes more sense to release it on BRD. Correct me if I'm wrong about it's release though.

Casino Royale is one of the better early releases on the format, so I heartily recommend it to you.

Yeah it is, I just picked up the first four movies for $39.90 shipped from amazon :)

I would say the HD DVD drive for 360 was a cost efficient way of getting into the market too. At least it is only $200 for entry. But yeah, if you are one of those early adopters who spent several hundred dollars on the first HD DVD player... don't complain now. You know the risk.

Casino Royale is awesome.

Now I almost feel like I should've just bought a 60 or 20 gb PS3 rather than a 360. But then again, 360's library is still better than PS3's. I guess I'll just wait for a cheap stand alone blu-ray player... when do you think the prices will reach sub-$200 levels?

You chose to be an early adopter in a hi-def war between two formats.

Had you been smarter with your $400 and really wanted hi-def movies, you would have went out and purchased a PS3, that way you could have gotten most of your money back by selling the PS3 if Blu-Ray lost.

Instead you're left with a $400 machine that while it'll still play your collection, will soon be relegated to a doorstop when you buy your Blu-Ray player, if you want to continue watching the latest movies in hi-def.

Alright, thanks for that. :)

And yes, it's been out for a while, I stand corrected. Little too expensive for me at the moment though. 32.99 Euro.... It's a shame the price won't drop for another few months though.

Good chart. Really only two close weeks out of 52. Five close weeks out of 52 if you are being generous.

That was all HD DVD could scratch.

Anyone claiming to be shocked that HD DVD is effectively dead now must have been suspending disbelief for far too long.

That is what I meant, allow(or encourage) other manufacturers to distribute budget priced standalones.

Apparently ID4 looks pretty good aswell. So good that when you see the ESB being blown up, you can see where the effects are etc. But it's a film i need to own.

yeah where the hell is Sin City? Disney puts out great Blu-Ray discs but their title selection so far has been mostly garbage.

Looking up through April for 2008 I see that trend is continuing..

No one wants to have another player in their set-up if they can avoid it. They'll see the PS3 is only slightly more expensive and has all the extra functions and go for it as their primary player.

Just checked my hd dvds and of my 9, 7 are universal movies and one is paramount. When does the paramount deal expire? I would think that thats when its all over. I expect universal to go with them (please switch and release lust caution Universal)

The deal was for 18 months, but if Paramount had be wise enough to put some sort of clause in the contract, it might be a lot less than that. For now, the deal would end somewhere in the beginning of 2009. But things can change rapidly now, especially with a lot of movie production companies wanting to end this useless format-war.

Took me awhile to find this thread among the cluster. Thread title isn't helping things.

As for my opinion, I think the problem with Blu-Ray/HD-DVD wasn't that we needed one single victor, it was that everyone cynically knows and Murphy's Law says that once you get behind one of these formats, the guys in charge will get bored, dump their commitments, and move on to the next big thing, leaving you hanging. The Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fight simply exasperated that problem, because the likely next big thing (whichever one that turned out to be) is standing right next to it. Warner just proved this fickle nature.

I was just starting to think that the ideal situation would be for as many groups as possible to take Warner's stance and support both sides, since turning one down side is tantamount to abandoning customers and ignoring free money, despite low userbases, until the people are confident enough to seriously take the plunge into HD. At which point the victor would be decided by the people, with no real loser, and enthusiasts picking both sides for the few inevitable holdout studios. That probably isn't going to happen anymore. Enjoy your victory Blu-Ray fans.

As for me personally, I just bought an HD DVD player for $99 with seven free movies that was delivered two days ago, because I figured at that price I couldn't go wrong. And my 720p set most likely will never see the supposed quality difference of Blu-Ray, so HD was right for me. And the top five movies I was now thinking about going out and purchasing were Harry Potter #1-5, published by Warner. Now I'm reconsidering, because I know I won't be able to get #6&7 to go with them. And I'm not gonna run out and buy them on Blu-Ray, because it'll be a few years until the price comes down that much. And by that point, the next big thing will obviously be that much closer. Thanks Warner, for proving that you're not reliable, nor is anyone else in this ugly fight. I'm not happy that you won't be getting my business for some time to come, but I already have Harry Potter #1-5 on DVD, and my shiny new HD-DVD player upconverts, so I'll survive.

anyway i think the retailers should can end this now. i really dont think its fair to sell a consumer an hddvd player right now. all they have to do is remove all hddvd players and movies and only stock blu-ray. universal and paramount will definetely crawl to the BDA in a hurry
