Oh bullshit. You might have an argument the other way around, and that was the widespread view at the time, but it's not like the xbox didn't do DVDs as well, and the GameCube was pretty much a non-starter. There is no basis to believe DVD was instrumental in the success of the PS2.

It was a factor for me. Around the time PS2 was announced stand alone DVD players were still high priced and buggy.

When the PS2 was announced, I just waited for it and used that as my primary DVD player. I also know a fair amount of people who use their PS2 as their primary DVD player as well.

Not to mention, unlike Xbox, you didn't need to purchase a peripheral (DVD remote) in order to watch DVD movies on the system out of the box.

I"m still waiting on Shoot'em Up to arrive. :( :( :(

so anywhere I can see a full list of coming soon, or already on blu ray movies?

im sorry but when people say they bought Underworld Evolution WITH PRIDE... something has gone wrong (and I liked Underworld)

You are full of it the PS2 was the buggy PoS player. I got 2 DVD players that year that never had an issue and they were cheaper than the PS2.

Those CES pics are a lie, btw. Blu-ray is definitely more crowded, but HD-DVD is far from abandoned, every time I've gone by it.

Why are you even walking by the booth (unless you're just dropping by to remind them that HD-DVD is dead)?

We don't know enough of the contract to know, but I'm sure they'd get to keep some monetary compensation for their efforts and opt out.
Well, presumably Toshiba would get some sort of pro-rated refund from Paramount when the opt-out clause is exercise. What Paramount gets to keep probably won't be that sizable, given that there is a good deal of time left on the contract.

I don't really buy that Paramount is going to turn down all that money just for the sake of "accelerating the market" or whatever.

Purchased over the weekend...

Bluray:
Ratatouille

HD DVD:
Shrek the Third
Casino
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Happy Feet
Transformers

Most were for the visuals or for when my nieces visit.

Also, I'm going to be buying up HD DVDs as they drop in price... Amazon, Ebay, B&Ms and build a small library. Actually, as big as I can get it until they pull the plug.

It'll be like how people now have a Laserdisk collection.. but it'll be HD DVD instead.

I also have Blu, so I'm set on that end.

I also have no problem having both machines hooked up at all times.

Of course BDA can also sweeten the deal and make it worthwhile for Paramount to put HD-DVD down quickly.

It could be heavily front loaded, which wouldn't surprise me given that they dropped support for Blu-Ray immediately and had their major exclusives this holiday season. Indiana Jones is a Spielberg film, likely the biggest Paramount film next year, so HD-DVD would have no advantage.

FT and others are reporting on this, so it's more than likely that Paramount will be on board very soon. This isn't going to be something that's going to drag on.

Hopefully they will let you price match if they drop.
If things go like they could, and both Paramount and Universal either go neutral or leave HD-DVD, there will be a close out sale on pretty much all titles, and fast.

If there were such a sale I'd rush to pick up The Adventures of Robin Hood, Grand Prix and Forbidden Planet with the quickness. I have a feeling it'll be a while before those come to BD.

As much as I hate the Transformers movie ( live action version of course ), I am interested to see what Bay adds to the blu version when it hits.
I mean he has been really vocal so I can guarantee it will not be a straight port.

why? They are warner discs and I doubt they'd be part of any 'special' arrangement with Toshiba like the Matrix might have been.

I'd love them on BD too - along with Casablanca.

He is more correct than you are.
The Matrix thing has nothing to do with any "special" arrangement, it had to do with available functionality.
No paid deals, no exclusivity just situational.
It will easily hit blu before the end of this year.

On the other hand Robin Hood, Casablanca and others are very low catalog sellers and while they will come they will not be a priority.

I'd hope for some form of PCM audio track considering the HD-DVD was just DD+.

Confirming earlier reports that it would follow Warner to Blu-ray exclusivity, New Line says its first HD DVD title ('Pan's Labryinth') will also be its last.

Though it was widely assumed that New Line (whose parent company is Time-Warner) would follow Warner Home Video's lead and continue to release on HD DVD through May 2008, a company rep tells us that New Line's move will go into immediate effect, with all of the studio's planned HD DVD releases now cancelled (including the HD DVD versions of current Blu-ray releases 'Hairspray' and 'Rush Hour 3,' which had previously been planned for HD DVD release sometime in early 2008).

As for 'Pan's Labryinth,' which hit stores late last year as the first (and only) New Line HD DVD release, the studio says that once current retail supplies are depleted, the title will be discontinued -- making it an instant collector's item.

New Line says it's not planning to issue an official press release trumpeting the move, ending its short-lived HD DVD support with a relative whimper.

The studio also tells us they won't be revealing any new Blu-ray titles at CES, though they do plan to continue to support the format throughout 2008 with a variety of new release and catalog titles to be announced in the future.

I really hope the Animatrix is in HD when it hits blu. That was a real downer of the HD-DVD Matrix set. Hell I happily would buy the damn thing separately from the live action Matrix films if it was HD.

I have FF: The Spirits Within on blu, and it looks great, so at the very least the opening Square Pictures Animatrix short should look great in HD. I'm sure the whole film would.

Yah I'm hoping for that too. Reading that the Animatrix was in SD was really stupid IMO.

I like how "Instant Collector's Item" is the spin they wanna use to market Pan's Labyrinth -- as if good movies on dead formats are really valuable. Shit, I could retire if only I could find my copy of Cocoon on Betamax!

People pay shitloads for recalled/discontinued DVDs. I remember when the original Little Shop of Horrors (which I still have) was hitting $1,000+ on eBay due to it being recalled after it came out.

I can see recalled DVDs being worth money to collectors. I can see people hunting down DVDs that are discontinued because they want to watch the film... But this is different.

This is something that isn't rare, it will be available on other formats in the future... and the only reason it's unique is because we aren't going to see other titles from that atudio on that format. I suppose it also won't be reprinted. You'd have to be an HD-DVD fanboy or Pan's Labyrinth super-fanboy to want this.

Because they aren't? The LOTR HD content (movie, extras, etc) has been finished and waiting to be pressed since 2006. They are waiting to release them.

I recall seeing Fellowship of the Ring HD available on Usenet years ago....I guess it aired on one of the HD premium channels or something.

Others have already explained who Little Shop was expensive, but I think there's another rule that's good to follow: If something is being called a "Collector's Item" before it's even been launched, it's probably not going to be one.

In Japan it was instrumental to PS2's early success.

Huh? All I did was explain that New Line has been sitting on HD LOTR for almost two years now. Michael Pellerin, Jackson's DVD producer, basically finished up the HD trilogy set not long after the Extended King Kong DVD was in the can and New Line has just been sitting on it. If they wanted to it could've been out right now on any format.

In the last two days I've bought nothing but BRDs.

I got:
Close Encounters
Spider-Man Trilogy
Simpsons Movie
FF: ROTSS
POTC 1
POTC 2
POTC 3
Ratatouille
Cars
Meet the Robinsons
3:10 to Yuma

Well, maybe just Fëanor then.

What do you think of the news, mana? You used to claim neutrality but put down BD whenever you could.

I still have my HD-DVD player, it didn't burst into flames. In fact, I watched 2001 on it last night and Troy: DC the night before and will watch Pans tonight probably (just finished watching POTC3 on the PS3). But from now on I'm just buying BRD discs and I will eventually replace my Warner HD-DVDs with Blu-Ray versions as money allows.

But before I do that, there are a few BRDs I still need to catch up on, but the TRU BOGO helped with that.

Give Mana a break. He actually likes HD, and I'm sure won't be one of those "my way or the highway" idiots. Besides, I thought he was coming around to BRD (even if only reluctantly) despite the fact that HD DVD was his clear choice.

I have not bought any LOTR movies, holding out for the HD versions. Hopefully New Line does put them out this year in a box set.

Also waiting on the Bourne series to come to Blu Ray as well. Of course, Universal needs to go blu first but this is just a matter of time.

Can't wait to get them. :D

Warner was right though. I've been sitting out on the sidelines not purchasing regular DVDs while waiting for this format war to wind down. Now I'll start getting all movies on hi def, except tv box sets, which are too damn expensive in HD relative to movies.
