Hi-Def Media Lovefest: The war is over and we can all go home.

Just wanted to throw this random quote in, an unrepresentative sample of the public opinion of all of this HD media stuff as overheard on the bus today, for the sake of amusement...

"our discs are special as they have to be blu-rayed"

That's right folks, Blu-Ray is a special feature of a disc in order to win a console war argument.

Luckily the person who said that is an idiot anyway, so I have higher hopes for the general population.

Interesting comments on Blu-ray bitrate and Panasonic Hollywood Labs/Sony AVC encodes:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=32191

Apparently Dave Vaughn insider contact at GDMX says that higher bitrate speeds up the encoding process considerably (no shit!).

On AVC vs. VC-1, Maxpower1987 says AVC produces better results 9/10 times and is not DNR heavy (soft picture). However VC-1 is much faster. He also hints at Batman Begins to be fully optimised for Blu-ray.

Christmas, maybe, if we're lucky. Maybe they'll need a new set of BD+ codes...

Apparently Master & Commander was delayed by marketing to coincide with a June Father's Day promotion.

i was hoping they'd release it to coincide with AVP:R but they picked Predator instead.

Its too bad the asshole sector of the market is the one that is going to win. I have truly never seen such amazingly pompous asses as Blu-Ray owners on the internet. John McCains every one of you! :p

You must be kidding?

There are morons on both sides.

HD DVD as a format had its merits. Blu Ray was never the "best possible way" because of region coding, along with other things.

You do realize that region coding is up to the studio? Plenty of BD's do no use region coding. So that is not a valid argument.

Regardless, Bay was talking about A/V quality - as a director, that is obviously their priority when referring to accuracy of the transfer.

IronicallyTwisted said:
Who gives a shit what studios want. Whats good for the CONSUMER is region free.

Unfortunately, when taken to its logical conclusion ... a lack of region coding when necessary, actually leads to eroding budgets for movies and TV shows.

I just wish ALL studios made the active decision to only use it when necessary.

at first I thought you were responding to the M&C delay and was really wondering. :lol

I wish it specified whether or not the JLU bonus episodes on the disc are HD or not. Probably not, but it'd be nice to know.
yes, that would be nice. I hope the film is better than the Doomsday one from a few months ago.

i was responding to that. i was really just voicing my annoyance at the fact Fox can't even get titles they've promised out on the shelves, let alone ones that they haven't that I want.

i was hoping that the deathknell of HD-DVD would spur them on... but apparently not.

That sucks about Master and Commander. I tried watching the DVD the other night, and maybe I've just been spoiled by watching BDs, but the colors were flat and overall picture was soft. It's a shame the BD won't have a fraction of the extras found on the 3-disc set, or I'd think about double dipping.

i'm selling my hd dvd add on along with 20 HD DVDs on ebay. what do you guys think is the least i should get for this thing?

It doesn't matter what we think. You're going to get whatever the eBay community is willing to pay for the player....which is probably about $100 at the moment. The discs will get more money if you sell them separately, but I wouldn't expect more than $10 each for anything but a really popular movie.

at this point I'd be doing the same so it would not really matter what prices you can get because in a year if Blu-Ray does take over who would buy HD-DVD's in their right mind.

Unless they like collecting obsolete hardware

well yeh you guys are right.

i wont be selling the player plus movies for anything under 200 bucks though. i just dont see myself selling this stuff for less than half of what i payed. i bought a dozen of the twenty movies about a week before the Warner announcement.

It is so hilarious seeing the flood of hd-dvd players on the various buy/sell boards I trade on. They all have a convenient excuse, "Uh I need the money for bills, I hate to sell though :( " "I got this but decided to upgrade blah blah blah"

BULLSHIT lol

As soon as I heard the WB announcement I had my stuff sold in 24 hours.

yeh i didnt even bother putting a bullshit excuse on ebay. the only person who may possibly believe it is the same idiot who buys the stuff from me.

the best ones are people who advertise like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...rms=Algo=MERI&ITS=Q%2BI&ITU=UCI&OTN=25&PO=Op1

the header says 6 movies yet they only have King Kong and are waiting on the 5 free ones.

or better yet, people who say they have 20 or 30+ movies when all they have are 5 or 6 box sets; they count each disc as a movie.

If I was you I would sell the player with maybe one or two movies, and then sell the rest on hidefdigest or dvdtalk for sale/trade boards.

Yeah, this might make it a little better depending on your movie tastes..

Just a heads-up, we've confirmed that Master and Commander has been delayed from 2/5 until June as part of a marketing effort to create a large Blu-ray Father's Day promotion from Fox and MGM. The good news is that Patton, The Longest Day, The Sand Pebbles, A Bridge Too Far, Battle of Britain, Mrs. Doubtfire and other titles will also be released on Blu-ray as part of this promotion.

Have any blu-ray releases used AVC so far? I don't recall reading about any one in particular, all releases seem to use either VC-1 or MPEG2.

Quite a few I think...Casion Royale does, it was one of the first from Sony during their transition from MPEG2 to AVC...The Fifth Element(Remastered) does as well.

www.highdefdigest.com is good at listing the various codecs in their reviews

Digital Playground Goes Blu-ray exclusive
January 16, 2008 - Popular consensus holds that VHS won out over Betamax largely because the major porn distributors made the surprising decision that – at least as far as home video formats were concerned – smaller was quite possibly better. And while size doesn't factor into this current format-war, HD DVD today received yet another…ahem…blow from the adult film industry as Digital Playground committed exclusively to Blu-ray.

Previously, Sony had not authorized porn for distribution on the Blu-ray format, effectively handing over the format advantage to HD DVD. A recent change of ideology on Sony's part, however, coupled with last week's Blu-ray victories, ultimately lead to Digital Playground's decision.

Stayed tuned for more here at IGN DVD!
