That would be silly.

I don't care about practicality, I just want internet lulz. Anyway, does AVS ever drop forums? CRT projector is still alive and well.

As for Enderle, it must be getting hard to keep the checks going :lol

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Movies on Blu-Ray...

Bandai Visual will ship the Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Trilogy Box on Blu-ray Disc with English dubbing and subtitles in Japan on July 25. The box's limited pressing will include The Laughing Man, the 159-minute compilation of the episodes that deal with the Laughing Man nemesis, and the similar 161-minute Individual Eleven compilation. It will include the 109-minute Solid State Society television movie. A bonus disc will include about 180 minutes of extras, including a new Tachikoma na Hibi video short and documentaries on the projects' designs and production.

Edit: Nevermind, It seems this box only contains the MOVIES and not the TV series.

So it has the SAC and 2nd Gig compilation movies, as well as Solid State Society

Juno BD is apparently coming out on April 15 with a digital copy courtesy of Fox.

As for Toshiba, an announcement of a dual format player is what I expect from them. And I'll be first in line to get one.

I simply don’t see anything to suggest, including the PS3 sales numbers, that we are going to have enough Blu-Ray players in the market before downloads go mainstream and Blu-Ray will go the way of the Laser Disk as a result.

See, this is what I don't get. People just imagine some magical process by which digital delivery takes over the market and leaves BluRay in the dust. But how is it going to happen? How are people going to get that content on their TV? Retail set-top boxes are unpopular, and people sitting on slow DSL lines are not going to enjoy waiting for movies. AppleTV is going to continue to bomb.

Cable companies don't have the infrastructure for HD VOD and probably won't for a long time. Even when they do, it doesn't seem like people are all that interested in VOD (it hasn't put much of a dent in retail DVD sales).

When and how exactly does this guy think that downloads are going to go mainstream?

:lol

I love how nearly every comments that it sucks because HD DVD players were cheaper. Christ, when is it going to sink in that the situation only occured as a last ditch effort / clearance by Toshiba ... and obviously wasn't sustainable.

People are still holding on to the premise from 3 years ago that BluRay is more expensive to manufacture. That is NOT the reason for the price delta at retail.

In reality, low-end BD players are now (or soon to be) cheaper to make than similar HD-DVD players. Toshiba can blame themselves for that situation.

Since CRT projectors are still being made, there isn't a reason to kill the forum is there?

As for whether they drop forums, I'm not sure. Is there still a D-VHS forum? I'm too lazy too look. If not, then I guess they do get rid of them after a while. That said, I'd expect the HD DVD forum to stay around for quite some time.

I must admit though ... I would laugh my ass off if they just shut it down :lol

If the mods there have any sense of humor, they'll do it for a day just to freak everyone out :p

kind of speaks to his role with Blu Ray, and it seems quite involved.
It could be read that way, but I think it's really just in the context of a potential hybrid format between BD & HDDVD for which he is expressing that he wouldn't want to compromise on the physical specs of BD discs. That doesn't necessarily imply he was responsible for those specs.

Like I said, I know he had a hand in getting initial BD devices on the market in Japan back in 2004-05, but I don't recall him having any critical role in the basic R&D of the physical format. That goes back another 4-5 yrs and he was much more involved in Cell development at that point.

But Onix seems to think differently. Maybe he can provide some links.

How Blu-Ray Won the Fight and Why It Probably Won’t Matter
That reads a lot like the article he wrote two month ago, as if he just regurgitated it or something. I think it even kept the "PS3 is currently the only affordable Blu-Ray offering that is likely to support the coming Blu-Ray 2.0 specification coming out early next year."

Early what year? 2009? I thought that was supposed to come out in first half of 2008.

I guess he's running out of spin.

NYTimes is now picking this up....

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/...its-hd-dvd-campaign/index.html?ref=technology
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/technology/AP-Wal-Mart-Blu-ray.html?_r=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin

Nothing new, just the NYTimes turn to report this. No signs of Toshiba speaking up on this. Their silence is deafening. I'm now just waiting on news of when Universal and Paramount will start supporting blu-ray. Since it seems like HDDVD is "officially' dead.

Ugh, I hate Ars Technica so much. It's such a wannabe tech site.

Yah, I've stopped reading them a while ago. They've seemed to lose their focus.

I'm really disappointed that Nico doesn't have the balls to say anything now after showing us so much during the past week. Unless some tragedy has occurred in his life (not counting HD-DVD dying, lol) then there is no excuse not to spend 5 minutes saying something.

Yes ... I was just reiterating since there appears to still be people that were unaware. In case you didn't notice, I was already aware of his involvement :p

IIRC, the 4 primary large-scale projects Ken was involved in during his post as Sony Prez where:

* Sony/Samsung LCD establishment
* BluRay
* CELL
* PS3

The whole Bravia thing worked out pretty well for them too. Poor Kutaragi...

As you stated, I don't believe he was involved on the onset. However, I believe he was invovled during the stage where negotiations with the DVD Forum, etc. were going on.

Also, he was certainly involved in getting it placed in PS3 (for good and for bad).

I wouldn't be too concerned about Ken ;)

The plan was always for him to do a number of long-term direction sort of maneuvers, and so far, I think they are looking to pan out quite well.

He still is a consultant for Sony, and will be tapped for future Playstations ... and potentially other items.

Plus the personal royalties he makes on PS hardware essentially insures he'll remain one of the richest people on the planet until... forever.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
It's just that the whole move with him stepping down, especially considering the timing (when the Ps3 was floundering worldwide) was just poorly handled by Sony, imo. I think he deserved a much better sendoff. It's like everyone was just yelling "fired", because even though it was billed as his doing, Sony just bungled the PR on that one. Even a simple ceremony or something would've been more fitting for someone who certainly STILL has a large influence on Sony's product lines, across the board and especially in their lucrative videogames business.

Let's just say he's dreaming. My service provider only gives 20GB bandwidth per month and the last time I remember, it takes 7 hours just to download a 2GB worth of file. I don't think I want to wait for days and waste my entire 20GB bandwidth just to download one movie.

Is Digg going to weigh in on this? I hope so.

So much venom has been slung at sony and blu ray by the gaming and electronics media coverage websites, it'll be nice to see them eat some crow now.

Kuturagi takes a bunch of crap too (I slung some of that his way too when it didn't look good for blu ray), and he ends up being the savior for Sony for a third console generation.

He going to go down as being far more important than just the Playstation family.

Sony/Samsung is pretty much the leader in flatpanels ... and assuming BD ends up moderately successful, it appears he was important in the refusal to compromise the physical disc structure when negotiating with Toshiba. Due to this, Sony has a bigger slice of the royalty pie.

On a lesser note, CELL may end up being a money-maker depending on how widely its used in CE devices, etc.

The Wal-Mart news is an even bigger deal than the WB megaton, I reckon.

So, no HD-DVD spinners left at all now? Come on you guys, give us one last laugh!

but what is up with all Ken K revisionist adoration? He is the reason the ps3 is in third place and he deserved to be shit canned. I'm not real sure about him being one of the richest people on the planet either but hey whatever helps you sleep better...

Funny, rewinding to July 2007, Wal-Mart was what was going to save HD DVD (after porn :lol) but in fact Wal-Mart flipping is the true end to the format.

So it's finally over, wow, I never thought it would end. At least not this fast.

Anyone know when Minority Report, Shawshank Redemption, and some of the more popular Tarantino movies will be coming out on BD?

On the contrary, his insistence on Blu-Ray is going to make Sony billions upon billions of dollars over the next decade and Stringer should beg for the privilege of blacking KK's boots with his tongue.

If games isn't your main thing and you don't need your console to be in first place, Ken's the Man for putting together such a sweet all-in-one package like the PS3.

Amazon UK has listings for Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2 at the end of March. Doubtful that they're actually coming out that soon, though, since there's absolutely no info regarding the releases. Certainly not for a while in the US.

Seriously Toshiba just don't know when to stop already. The war is over and this is getting embracing for them ................. and entertaining for us :lol . But now its just too painful and pitiful to watch. The only honorable thing to do when you're bitch slapped fair and square is to commit Seppuku as the thread title suggests. Its better than the opponent doing it for you :lol
