Already backpeddling.

Edit: Beaten.

Straight up admitting that you were wrong is not backpeddling.

I'm astonished at this. Even acknowledging that she's wrong afterwards barely helps because I'd have to be completely mentally checked out to say those words in the first place. Still has my vote though.

Seriously Hillary is a shit campaigner. She's a good social mover but her real life political skills are painfully lacking when it comes to public engagement.

So she basically wanted to praise Reagan to look like she has a broad reach, grabbed history and public health to be less controversial.

She just flew into a window. Surreal.

Trump is going to make all Americans great again, including the gays. He loves the gays. This only shows what a big fat mess Hillary is. Believe me.

Good rule to live by if you're a progressive politician.

Never mention Reagan in a positive way.

At that point you might as well go to a Sunday service, grab the mic and thank Lucifer for all the good he's done.
Well I get why she felt the need to praise her for something because she was at the funeral service today

But talk about like, her thing with Gorbachev, or flipping Reagan on guns, or something ANYTHING OTHER THAN THIS

This is why I vote Bernie only.

Any more mistakes like this by her and I'll vote for Trump.

I'm not at all happy with Hilary's comment (even with her apology) but if you seriously think Trump has not said tons of things that are worse than this you are seriously deluding yourself.

I had to check and make sure it wasn't April 1st already.

Clinton said:

Is she talking about this Ronald Reagan? The same guy who didn't address AIDS for half a decade, after it was already a major problem?

These comments are really beyond the pale.

Nancy Reagan wouldn't even help a dying Rock Hudson.

Holy. Shit.

FUCK you, Clinton. As a queer man, this is especially reprehensible to me. So glad I live in blue California, where I don't have to waste my vote supporting a trash candidate like you for "pragmatism".

Sad to see people overreacting here. Sure, she fucked up but she immediately apologized. wtf is wrong with you people.

And that guardian article is just wow. Fuck Regan and fuck any republican who worships that fuckface.

I agree. Swift admission by her is better than trying to deflect blame with any actions or contributions the Reagans would have taken later in the 80s after the initial terrible resposne.

yet she's great at debates and was amazing at the Benghazi hearings. What gives? Unless...

A lot of republicans worship him unfortunately.

Fuck Reagan.
Who was she even pandering to with that quote? Reaganites hate Hillary with a passion.
Trying to say something nice for Nancy's funeral this afternoon, I'm sure (and she attended, so a statement while there would be customary). A staffer is hopefully getting fired over this, but even a glace over this and she should have known better.
Probably time to start prepping a Biden run.
This is a biiiiiiiiiit extreme a reaction. Not that I'd blame anyone for being offended by what she said. But legitimately damaging? No.

Edit: Damaging to some, I understand. I wouldn't hold it against anyone if they were to change a vote based on this. Just that, bigger picture, it's likely to not mean much.

I mean, when Bernie makes a gaffe we get hundreds of posts about how he's racist and dog whistling or whatever so I don't think this is overreacting compared to that.

It's definitely the best thing should could have done, but the fact that she had to do it at all is baffling. She should've known better.

Though, certainly still not on the same level as saying all mexicans are rapists and being hesitant to denounce David Duke.

Really odd thing to say, not just because it's patently untrue but it was totally unnecessary for her to say in the first place.

If she really want to heap some across the aisle praise on the Reagans, she should bring up their support of gun control or something.

That's not what backpeddling is.

Right, gun control measures that only took Reagan getting shot then leaving office to actually get a move on.

Right? Besides being factually incorrect, who the hell was she pandering to? How was this statement beneficial to make even if it had been true? It's not gonna convince Republicans to vote for her and it's not going to bring aboard Democrats that are voting for Bernie.

This is the kind of thing you'd expect to hear from one of the Republican candidates that like to buff up Reagan.

She wasn't reading from a teleprompter. If she was fed that line by a staffer, she should have threw it away before she went on the air because she should be aware how ridiculous it is. Crazy.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

It was just her saying something about Nancy at her funeral, it isn't meant to go that deep

She says "misspoke" like it was a slip of the tongue, or a small error. But she said:

It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS back in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan -- in particular Mrs. Reagan -- we started a national conversation. When before nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it, and that too is something that I really appreciate with her very effective, low key advocacy but it penetrated the public conscious and people began to say, 'Hey, we have to do something about this too.

That's not misspeaking. That's a paragraph of glowing praise, based on utter reprehensible falsehoods. There are only two explanations. First, that she was woefully ignorant and misinformed about the Reagans' approach to HIV/AIDS. Second, that she was fully aware but deliberately lied to burnish the credentials of a corpse.

Neither can honestly be described as "misspeaking". Her apology, flanked as it is by yet more praise of those monsters, is just as false as her initial statement.

She shouldn't be praising his actions on AIDS, but shitting on Reagan at Nancy Reagan's funeral probably isn't the right thing to do either

The expression is "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything," not "if you can't say anything nice, invent offensive ahistorical fantasies out of whole cloth"
