Hillary Clinton Thanks Ronald Reagan for AIDS Actions

Yeah, calling this "misspeaking" is hilariously lame, and I'm surprised anybody could fall for it. This wasn't one word, or a word missing, this was a full on paragraph of lies. But Hillary is so deep in the establishment that this kind of "truth" is apparently all she knows. This is utterly, utterly shameful but ultimately not surprising in the least coming from Hillary.

Politico is all over this, with a nuanced look at Reagan's record.

Nuance?! About Reagan, the devil himself? I'm not sure GAF is ready for that.

Apparently the one that deserves praise is George Bush Jr. He started programs that will legitimately lead to the end of AIDS transmissions in Africa.

Shitty move on her part. I'm pretty disappointed and sure a good many others will be too.

Hillary says a lot of things she doesn't really believe in order to win votes, it's just something she does automatically. This time it bit her in the cheek.

How do you mispeak in such a lenthy way? She was lying not making a mistake

It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS back in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan -- in particular Mrs. Reagan -- we started a national conversation. When before nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it, and that too is something that I really appreciate with her very effective, low key advocacy but it penetrated the public conscious and people began to say, 'Hey, we have to do something about this too.

That looks something acceptable right? She probably misspoke, she has a good track record on LGBT issues. She's apologized and stated what she said was wrong.

She said something terrible but that doesn't make your statement mm any less false than it was a day ago.

Privilege.

"If I can't have mine, I'm taking my ball and going home. Nah! That'll teach you! It won't affect me because elections are about nothing but winning or about the moral high-ground for me because no matter who's been elected so far in my life, I've barely felt the difference"

I mean, yeah, I'm a fan of nuance in political discussions as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure him feeling bad after he no longer had the power to do something about it and failing to even have the conversation for most of his presidency really helps the people who were affected throughout the 80s.

Now now, there's no room for being reasonable here. You're putting a real damper on this rabble rousing.

It's good she apologized, but this is reaching.

I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill here. She said something dumb and wrong while trying to eulogies someone who she didn't agree with a whole lot of views on. Then she immediately appologized when she and others realized what shr said wad dumb. Its not like she personally said something bad about LGBT people or anything.

How is it reaching?

You'd have to also change the 80s to the 90s since they didn't start Alzheimer's advocacy until then. It's clear what she meant.

So, those who want to go easy on her, can we agree to go easy on all candidates when they 'misspeak' in this manner?

Because GAF has a pretty long history of not doing this...

She's trying to look bipartisan and presidential, as the Reagans are remembered fondly by a certain Washington set who wasn't too actively left. Same with her fond words for Kissinger, who is still very highly regarded by the Washington foreign policy establishment.

It's hard to breed the Third Way Democrat out of her, basically. There's still an instinct in there that causes her to want to remind people that she's not too liberal, caused from being at Bill's side as he fought his way up the ranks from one of the most conservative places in the country.

What?

Why would it be difficult to talk about Alzheimer's? Why would "nobody want to talk about" Alzheimer's? It was already an established illness since the early 20th century. That doesn't make a lick of sense.

First all the republican candidates mentioning Reagan every chance they can, and now democrats too?

This election is the best entertainment out there.

Man, totally. Bernie would've been skewered to kingdom come if he said something like this.

Well, Drumpf never misspeaks... Or at least never admits it, so it would be a one way street in the election anyway.

It's a big big deal for gay people.

You should watch 'how to survive a plague' to see how angry gay people were at Reagan (some times justifed, sometimes not) in the 80s.

its a great documentary. Currently, the film has a rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an average score of 8.6/10.

Sure, if their explanation makes sense. I'm so tired of these bullshit flag lapel pin non scandals. I'm sick of people stirring up outrage over non substantive quotes over anyone who isn't their candidate. GAF at least should be better than this.

lol how does this happen. I'm a straight Australian and I know that the reagan's were awful on this issue (along with every other). Bizarre.

It's what happens when you run for office. Sorry.

You know it.

Hillary flip-flops on gay rights often enough she forgot what the correct stance on AIDS in 2016 is, no biggie! Honestly, this doesn't come as a surprise to me given her revisionist history when it comes to rationalizing DOMA, why not make the Reagans staunch AIDS activists while we're at it?

Who are you to say this is nonsubstantive? Her history on LGBT rights is shaky as shit and then she comes out with this nonsense. It's abhorrent, and Hillary supporters trying to sweep this under the rug as quickly as possible is pretty repulsive as well.

Silently funding AIDS programs and writing an article about how sad you are that you didn't do much more doesn't really negate the thousands of lives lost. I mean it doesn't really help the Reagan case to be honest.

Also:
Nancy Reagan Turned Down Rock Hudson’s Plea For Help Nine Weeks Before He Died
So yeah. I don't think it even changes that much.

It's non substantive because it's not what she means. If you've seen her emails from the email "scandal" you'd know how steadfast she is on LGBT rights. For the record, I'm a Bernie supporter, I'm just not a fan of this rabble rousing nonsense. Hillary has plenty of problems with the issues she actually believes in that making shit out of this is just petty.
