Hiroki Totoki: PS5 Pro's pre-orders are "slightly stronger" than PS4 Pro during the same period



The sales target includes units from the new PlayStation 5 Pro, which was launched Thursday. In the U.S., the enhanced console carries a price tag of $699.99. While Totoki acknowledged that he has received many comments about this high price, he also showed no signs of changing it.

"It is a high-end product targeted at core customers, so we haven't been eyeing a large sales plan to begin with," the president said. "I'm under the impression that the product is performing slightly stronger than the pre-orders of the PS4 Pro during the same period, so I don't think it is adversely affecting the product's sales plan."

They could've sold more if they had just manufactured more of the 30th anniversary edition. So many people wanted one but couldn't because only 12K of them were made.
 
1) No one was attempting to scalp PS4 Pro.
2) There are approximately double the PSN users now compared to 2016, let alone how many people are in the market, period.

So, yeah, obviously pre-orders are going to be higher than PS4 Pro.

Much like PSVR2, I imagine the PS5 Pro sales would be front loaded by the folks who tried the prior version and are happy to take up the new hardware. There are a lot of happy PS4 Pro fans, after all. However, also like the PSVR2, it'll be how many people continue to buy in that ultimately determines its success. Of course, I imagine Sony's sales expectation would be fairly low for the PS5 Pro given it's price and current state of consumer spending.

PS5 Pro really can’t fail by definition. It’s a higher margin product and serves multiple purposes. The tech will go on to be expanded on PS6 and all the users that sat out on the Pro will eventually benefit from BC

Even low sales still easily justify the product
 
I'm not surprised to see it's doing well. It's doing a lot more than PS4 Pro did back in the day and is an overall more compelling product. Even if it's doing slightly better or on par it's a huge achievement considering how much more expensive a PS5 Pro is than the PS4 Pro was. This is all pure profit for Sony since they have much higher profit margins on the PS5 Pro, it's a win-win for them.

Long term I expect the PS5 Pro to do well and sell on par or higher than the PS4 Pro did. It's a nice product and I'm already seeing the benefits of mine. i expect Sony to move quite a fair amount of PS5 Pros when GTA6 launches especially since it will be the best place to play it till the game arrives on PC whenever that is.

Before release Sony mentioned that their goal with PSVR2 was to sell somewhere above than PSVR1.

The only proper sales data we have is Sony saying that during its launch windows months outsold launch aligned the PSVR1, and month laters their marketing head said during the Holidays season that they were happy with its performance.

Other than that we don't have specific worldwide sales reports from Sony, so we don't know if it's frontloaded or not at all. But we see that they keep breaking records with their accesories revenue, and we also see that PSVR2 is getting way more games faster than PSVR1. As of now in a year and a half PSVR2 has over 330 games released or announced, while PSVR1 got over 530 games in 8 years.

It sounds like he doesnt even know how well its doing, but got told by someone it is so he's just going with it.

Japanese are pretty honest when it comes to business reports. Just look at Square, Capcom, etc. They don't sugar coat or beat around the bush , even if its a bad news they will report it, a nd even if its a good news they are still not satisfied.
