PS5 Pro Pricing Didn’t Have A Negative Effect; Aimed For Hardcore Users, Says Sony President Hiroki Totoki

Just curious about the nearly 900? Mine was 750 shipped. If we are just saying gpu vs console. I can’t wait for the ti 50xx series. Not sure the supposed almost 2k for the 5090 is in my cards.
I have like 25 physical games and a 10% sales tax, so it'd cost me $860 to buy a functional Pro. I might would have stomached $699 with the disc drive and a good Gamestop trade in promo, but they went a bridge too far for me.

Now they know that people will pay through the nose, expect similar prices for future console releases.

Huh? At least by the translation he’s just stating an opinion. CEO’s can say whatever they want in that case:

Not sure why you are ignoring my point to throw out that kind of statement.

Companies BS and spin all the time, they just can’t make factually incorrect statements.
I understand that suits throw things out to the public when marketing, but this was an investor meeting call.

If people aren't minding the price then why the f wasn't the disc drive included on the system or at least two options to choose? People would have paid the extra if they didn't mind. Will someone fire him and whoever decided it was a logical idea to split the disc drive from the console, creating this fiasco overpriced scalpfest we have now. That said. I love my Pro, So far I've tried Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West. 4k Aloy looks glorious everything seems crisper.
they just wanted 1 sku. easier to sell that way. Places like Best Buy Target prefer it less floor/storage space.

It’s still an opinion. He literally can’t “know” that the price didn’t affect sales, so him saying he thinks it didn’t isn’t some violation of ethics or anything.

I personally find it a bit absurd of a statement; if it cost less, it would almost certainly sell more. And since it’s sitting in store shelves right now, that is absolutely possible vs if it sold out.

I don’t think the Pro has much to do with the health of PlayStation overall which is obviously great either way, but “I don’t think the price effects sales” just seems like spin to me.

The price helps justify them keeping the base PS5 price high so it works for them in that sense.

Hardcore users would rather spend a extra couple hundred dollars for a superior machine.
This is why the Pro value proposition is off, at $700 it should have had better specs or reduce the price to $550
PSSR ML is the key. The tech is worth it. It is just 1.0 version and just scratching the surface but it is already impressive on some games it enhance and upgraded. Just wait for within one year, for PSSR ML to be more updated and adjusted to upgrade and enhance games.

How can he not know? They have forecasts from best case and worst case. Seeing the data so far from preorders to current unit trends can help form his opinion based off of factual data.

These hardcore audiences prefer 2tb storage for a disc drive ? Or a better cpu?
It boggles my mind they went with 2tb storage and not the other options

Saying “the sales met our forecasts” is far different from “we don’t think the price affected sales.”

They literally, and I mean literally factually CAN’T know that the sales weren’t affected by the price. They have zero way of knowing how many people didn’t buy it because the price was too high for them.

I mean the quote indicates it’s just an opinion, because it is. (he ends it with “I don’t think”)

200,000 ps5 pro sales on launch world wide is already a win. But if its 500,000 or more world wide, that is WOW, that is exceeding expectations. But it does not matter too much for Sony since they consider ps5 pro as part of of the whole PS5 console line up. As long as the ps5 slim and ps5 OG still continues to have good sales, and same with software sales , that what really matters for Sony. Ps5 pro is made for enthusiast and for developers additional canvas for creativity.

make the next one even more premium IMO. gap should be larger between base and Pro. I think the minumum in power gap should be what xbox 1 to 1X was
This. I would have bought a Pro if the upgrade was massive, but 30ish percent in a best case scenario isn't enough to justify replacing my PS5 right now. If I was just a throw money to the wind type of guy then maybe, but I tend to be pretty frugal, perhaps to my detriment at times lol.

I wish they would take it further.
It’s just an underpowered pc (to me) at that price point. (Games are getting closer to day 1 on PC) Tack on another $200 - $300 and make it a beast, pussies.
I don’t mind paying $1300 CAD if I can get a Sony box with that Cerny magic. I know it would punch well above it’s weight and be more future proof.

Atm Sonys hardware lineup is like gimped PC offerings. The ceiling is only so high.

I’m interested to see if Microsoft takes this approach to hardware.

Most of us don't want the disc drive version. You can buy it as an accessory, it's not a big deal.

People had MONTHS to buy the disc attachment if they wanted to have it for launch, but the same people that said they weren't going to buy it decided that they were going to buy it but too late to get a disc drive. There will probably be an abundance of drives after the holidays.

You clearly didn't "mind" because you still bought it. Nothing you say here adds up. The drives are sold out, so clearly there was demand there and it helps Sony's margins that they're not covering from retail.

Months? Rumors didn't say anything about lack of disc drive and Cerny video was quite recent?

We first heard that there would be a discless SKU since August 29th.

We've known for a fact there would not be a disc SKU on September 10th.

People have had AMPLE time to buy a drive if it was that crucial for them, but instead they spent the time downplaying the PS5 Pro while secretly wanting one, only to then be in a position where they could not find a drive for retail prices.

They were easily available to find until pretty recently.

What else is he going to say to public investors release week? "We identified the wrong market segment and fucked up the pricing"? Let's revisit this after the initial holiday season bump and see the staying power of this thing. Something like 1 out of every 4 PS4s sold was a Pro, following its release. If the PS5 Pro repeats this performance I'd say it would be a success. Especially considering PS4 Pro actually had a reason for existence, where as PS5 Pro is a beta test for PSSR and the next-gen console.

Well shit, apparently I’m not a hardcore user.
Dividing a user base like that's a fail on a whole bunch of different levels.
PS1/2/3 are all made for hardcore users but not PS4/5.
Sony's made a small number users 'hardcore' by lowering the status of the masses who bought the PS5.
People will see 'Enhanced for Pro' on a PS5 game and wait to buy it on the lower priced PS6.

No one who posts on gaming boards has an excuse for not getting a disc drive before they sold out. You're way in the know to have fumbled on this. The problem is many of you wanted to dunk on PS5 Pro before ultimately deciding to buy it. Many of whom have their entire backlog on disc. A precursor to a future problem when eventually consoles don't support discs and their libraries are not going to move forward.

Not everyone who couldn't find a drive was dunking on the Pro lol That's a pretty dumb and unfair point to make. Some might have been waiting on the price, or had any number of reasons to decided after the announcement, and then were mostly shit out of luck.

In the end we are talking about probably waiting a month or something for Sony to crank out some drives and this is some real first world problems shit, but it is I'm sure a little annoying for those that care and some real poor planning by Sony.

Just hit up Bestbuy during lunch to see if it was running on display there. It wasn’t but there were a stack of 11 or 12 of them available near the registers.

I want one, and kinda jealous of my GAF bros who are playing it right now, but I decided to wait til next year before picking it up. I just don’t need it atm. I beat Astro Bot (GOTY!) and currently halfway through Metaphor. DQ3 is probably next on my list and none of these titles need the Pro. The recent Baldur’s Gate 3 4k60 on the Pro announcement had me looking for my wallet though … maybe if there is a good Black Friday deal I might break down and grab one. I really should be putting the money towards an OLED TV though.
There's plenty of us out there just chilling and waiting for something like GTA6 before being willing to pony up the cash

It's not a big deal, my PS5 is mainly for exclusive titles and also titles I want to get Platinum trophies in

I don't think they will price the PS6 that high, but I can see the console launching at 599.99 in US and 649.99 in EU.

Without a disk drive of course.

Theres absolutely no chance of getting a generational leap over the pro with an 100 dollars cheaper machine ... if the ps5pro retain its price until the end of the gen thats the price of the ps6 imho .. OR... sony will have two skus from the start being one ps6 at 499/599 and the ps6 pro at 699/799

If they go with only one sku I expect the ps6 to cost 699 with the ps5pro being the "cheaper" option since all games will probably be cross platform anyway.

I have an excuse. Sony should have made more fucking disc drives and have them ready and available the day the PS5 Pro launches. There was seemingly no special stock/reserved stock of disc drives at retailers for when the Pro launched? Stop wiping Sony's ass they're the ones who fumbled.

Well yeah at practically $800/£800, Euros etc they're not exactly targeting the mainstream who are used to 500 dollar consoles. And will be banking on enthusiasts with more disposable income to pick the slack. I'd imagine they're making quite a bit of profit per console sold as opposed the base PS5 and Slim.

Maybe they're also testing the waters, pricing wise in lue for next generation. Raising the bar, setting expectations for a premium console. Because to get a meaningful uplift (even in a few years), they're going to have to invest a lot into larger, more expensive APU's and overall system costs; which no doubt will be passed onto us. Not that I'd expect a $700 PS6. A $650 PS6 though (disk drive and all). In any case with Microsoft conceeding somewhat in the console space right now they can charge whatever they want. Until at least they have some competition in the hardware space.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
This statement confirms the opposite.

The Pro was priced for hardcore users, the PS6 is not aimed at hardcore users.
Normal I would agree but I don't think the price reflects on who it's aimed at.
The " who would buy another console at the same price it was at launch (maybe a bit more) with minimal upgrades" the answer is The Hardcore.
But the question of "Will Sony charge less for actual Nextgen console then they did for the minimal upgrade"
The answer is of course they won't, it'll likely be the same if not more.
The product has changed, its no longer a midgen upgrade that you don't actually need to play the current gen games, hence why it targeting the hardcore
It's the next Playstation for Nextgen with it's own games and everyone is targeted.
And at launch, it's the Hardcore that'll pay the price they set and everyone else will grab whatever deals they can get
Look how much the PSVR2 was, is the PS5 Pro's price really surprising?
Not really, and I expect the same for PS6 if that's the message we give them which is...this is fine.

Why didn't you buy a disc drive earlier?

Sure, be angry at Sony for not getting more on the market, but even that argument has limits. What's your reason for not buying a drive when you had the chance?

Once again, people had WEEKS if not MONTHS to acquire drives. They were readily available. Stop acting like you're a casual gamer who didn't know better. Everyone on neogaf should know better.
